4. Application notes
The torque transducers measure in both right and left loads. For right load, the output signal is positive, with left load
negative. The type plate provides information about the measuring range end value.
The screwing simulator can only be used for clockwise running.
As a precision measuring instrument, the transducer requires careful handling during transport and use, as impacts or
droppings can damage the transducer. Torque peaks beyond the permissible overload can lead to the destruction of
the torsional shaft.
The limits for permissible mechanical, thermal and electrical loads are listed in the Test Device data sheet for
hydraulic tools type PH. It is essential that they are respected.
Please take this into account when planning the measuring arrangement, and finally during operation.
Shielded cables shall be used for electrical connection.
ETH-Torque transducers have been upgraded to their electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) in accordance with EN
55011/03.91 (DIN VDE 0875-11/07.92) or prEN 50082-2/1993 (E DIN EN 50082-2/03.94).
5. Conditions at the site of operation
5.1 Ambient Temperature
In order to achieve optimum results, the nominal temperature range must be maintained.
Constant, at most slowly changing, temperatures are best. The specified temperature errors apply if the
temperature does not change faster than 5°K/h. Unilateral radiant heat or cooling should be avoided and, if
necessary, appropriate measures taken.
5.2 Moisture and dust
The transducers comply with the protection class IP40 according to DIN 40050
If the test device is fogged by large temperature changes, it must not be put into operation, as the moisture is
involved in the measurement.
In the case of active version, the humidity during operation can lead to the destruction of the measuring
amplifier.
Dust, dirt and other foreign objects must not accumulate in such a way that they can penetrate the sensor or the
connector.
Dirt deposits in the plug lead to measurement errors
Note: Do not enter moisture into the transducer's connector!
5.3 Chemical influences
The transducers are not protected against chemical influences. They cannot be used in aggressive environments.
The torque transducer is not approved for use in hazardous areas.

6. Structure of the measuring chain
In order to be able to measure with the transducer, the construction of a complete measuring chain is required.
This consists of:
Torque transducer
Connecting cable
Supply and evaluation device
a registration device, e.g. printer (if required)
7. Connecting
7.1 Notes for wiring
Electric and magnetic fields often cause the coupling of interference voltages into the measuring chain.
These faults are primarily caused by high-voltage power lines parallel to the measuring line, but also from nearby
contactors or electric motors.
In addition, interference voltages can be coupled by galvanic means, in particular by grounding the measuring
chain at several points, so that potential differences occur.
Observe the following notes
Use only shielded and low-capacity measuring cables
(ETH measuring cables meet these conditions).
do not install the measuring cable in parallel with high current or control lines.
Scattering fields of transformers, motors and fuses must be avoided.
transducer, evaluation and display device do not erase multiple times.
Connect all devices in the measuring chain to the same protective conductor.
7.2 Connectors
The transducers are equipped with a 14-pin (passive version) or 12 pin (active version) built-in plug type Binder
Series 680.
7.3 Cable Extension
Extension cables must be shielded and low in capacity.
We recommend the use of ETH-cables that meet these requirements.
For cable extensions, care must be taken to ensure proper connection and good insulation. Care must be taken to
ensure that the cable cross-section is sufficiently large to ensure sufficient supply voltage on the transducer.
7.3.1 Passive version
A cable extension is involved in the measurement, since the internal resistance of the measuring cable and
that of the transducer form a voltage divider. This can be avoided by using a supply and evaluation device
with sensor lines.
7.3.2 Active version
A cable extension is not involved in the measurement if the supply and evaluation device have a galvanic
separation of the supply voltage of the transducer and the measuring signal amplification.
(The supply and evaluation device type GMV2 has a galvanic isolation).

8. Measurement signals
The transducer provides a torque-proportional voltage signal. The respective measurement signal size can be found in
the type plate or data sheet.
For right load, the output voltage is positive, with left load negative.

The back at a glance
Connection of the torque transducer
For different types of torque transducers there are the appropriate connection cables!
This GMV2 version is intended for the use of active transducers with ± 5V. A passive input is optionally available.
Please use only the designated cables that you can obtain from ETH.
Connection of the power section
On the back of the device is the 25-pin socket "IN / OUT" which is intended, among other things, for connecting the
power section. Before switching on the device, the wrench should be switched off.
Turning on
After checking the correct connection of the cables, you can turn on the device with the button. After a short self-
test, all settings that were valid before switching off are restored. Now a zeroing of the transducer is carried out. After
that, the device is ready for measurement.
If the error message "charge!" appears, please connect the power cord. You can now work in mains or turn off the
device during the charging period of about five hours.
Notes:
−When the device is switched on, the outputs switch on briefly. Therefore, the hand switch of the wrench should be
switched off.
−Before the first measurement, you should check whether the basic settings of the device meet your requirements.
−If the battery is not charged 15 minutes after the first charge notification, the device itself will turn off.
Turning off
The device can only be switched off in level 0 (when the torque is displayed) with the button !
If necessary, the back button must be pressed beforehand until the torque is displayed.
If a defect causes the device to stop being operated or switched off, the fuse on the back can be removed. In this case,
however, data loss is not excluded.

Battery operation
The device is optionally equipped with a battery. Since the torque sensor is also supplied, it is possible to carry out
measurements independently of the power grid.
The built-in lead-gel battery is maintenance-free, overcharge protected and is automatically recharged in (indefinite)
mains operation. A full charge takes a maximum of 8 hours during the measurement operation, and a maximum of 5
hours when switched off. After that, a continuous measurement operation of at least 9 hours is possible.
The GMV2 has a battery monitor that displays the error message "Charge!" every minute and a beep also sounds. At
the bottom right of the display, the message remains constantly displayed. You should then charge the battery as
soon as possible (further operation is possible with power cord).
Notes:
−If this does not happen and the device is in measuring mode, it switches off after 15 minutes!
−Caution: If the device is in the menu level, it can no longer turn itself off, which can cause the battery to be deeply
discharged and its performance compromised.
−In case of prolonged storage or non-use (1/2 year), the battery must be recharged.

15. Warnings
! The screw M64 [pos. 16] has no stop in the dissolving mode (left-hand rotation),
i.e. the machine support ring [pos. 01] is pressed upwards.
Remedy: Stop the machine before or turn it by hand until the gear is flat before the
new measurement process.
! When removing the transducer [pos. 04] using the eye bolt [pos. 28] it is essential to ensure
that the adapter square [pos. 05] only rests loosely and has to be removed separately.
!If the test specimen or test device is touched during the operation of the test facility, there is
an increased risk of injury!
!Before each commissioning, the fixed seat of the test specimen shall be checked on the test
device. Furthermore, care must be taken to ensure that the counter-holder finds a correct grip
on the start-up block. If this is not the case, a suitable start-up block must be installed.
!Where people and objects can be harmed in the event of a break, appropriate safety measures
(e.g. covers, overload protections) must be taken by the user (observe relevant accident
prevention regulations!).
!Note that the transducers are not designed with the usual safety factors (2...20) in favor of
high measurement sensitivity. In particular, consider the overload factors specified in the
datasheet.
!If the test device is fitted by large temperature changes, it must not be put into operation, as
the moisture is involved in the measurement. In the case of active version, the humidity during
operation can lead to the destruction of the measuring amplifier.
