Chapter 1: System 5 Overview
This Euphonix System 5 is a fully-featured digital audio mixing system. The system is
highly configurable -- options include a scalable control surface with application-specific
controls (for example, dual joysticks with a film monitor panel), a scalable DSP mix engine,
a flexible I/O system, an integrated MADI router, a serial machine control interface, and
GPIO.
These options allow the System 5 to be configured for virtually any audio mixing applica-
tions, including large-scale film production, on-air broadcast, post-production, and music.
Theory of Operation
Digital Signal Processing (DSP)
The DF66 SuperCore performs all audio processing in the System 5, including dyna-
mics, EQ, mix busses, aux sends, and monitor busses. The unit can be fitted with up to
six SP662 DSP cards with each card providing four MADI I/Os. DSP is allocated using
factory-supplied Mixer Model files which provide different numbers of busses and chan-
nels.
The number of DF66 DSP cards required in a system depends on the number of logical
channels desired, for example: a mono source uses one logical channel, a stereo source
uses two, and a 7.1 source uses eight.
In broadcast redundancy configurations, two identical DF66 SuperCores operate in parallel,
one as primary and the other as backup. Each connects to the CO600 MADI Changeover
The System 5’s primary components communicate via a 100Base-T star network. These
components include the DF66 SuperCore mix engine, all control surface modules, the
SC264 System Computer, and the CO600 MADI Changeover Switch used in broadcast
redundancy configurations. In addition, TCP/IP-controlled devices such as the modular
remote preamps also communicate through this network.
Secondary peripheral devices include the ML530 Mic/Line Interface and the MC524 Mon-
itor Interface. These devices are connected to the SC264 System Computer and commu-
nicate via the Euphonix TCC serial protocol. The SC264 also houses the GPIO and serial
machine control interface.
All Euphonix I/O devices interface via MADI. I/O devices connect directly to the DF66
SuperCore or to the CO600 MADI Changeover Switch in broadcast redundancy configura-
tions.
The following sections describe important aspects of system operation and configuration.

Switch which monitors the performance of both. In the event of a failure in the primary,
the backup is automatically placed online.
Control Surface
The System 5 control surface consists of a number of control surface modules. These
modules are described below. Typically, each connects to the system via a network ca-
ble. Each console must include one CM401T Master Module and at least one CM408T
Eight-Fader Module.
•CM401T: Master control module with configuration interface.
•CM402T: Expanded channel module with eight faders.
•CM403: Dual joystick and film monitor panel.
•CM408T: Eight-fader module.
•C
Facilities often install a larger console frame than is required for the initial
surface module configuration. This can be due to plans for future expan-
sion or to fulfill physical requirements for console access. Blank sections
such as the CM409F and CM409H are available to fill otherwise empty
spaces in the frame.
M409F: Blank section, same size as the CM408T.
•CM409H: Half-width blank section.
•CM409HTP: Half-width section with a trackball panner.
•CM411: VGA input module with optional dual joysticks.
Below are important concepts regarding control surface configuration:
Sources
A System 5 fader can control one source at a time. Sources may be formatted
to be mono, stereo, or any format up to 7.1. Each source will require one or
more logical channels. For example, a mono source requires one channel, a
stereo source requires two, and a 7.1 source requires eight. This means that a
fader controlling a 5.1 source is controlling six logical channels simultaneously.
Physical Faders
Each CM408T eight-channel module has eight fader strips. Up to two sources
(any format) can be assigned per fader strip. These sources are called the Main
source and the Swap source (also referred to as the console’s Main and Swap
layers). The fader strip controls one source at a time, as determined by the fader
strip’s SWAP button. Engage SWAP to control the Swap source. Disengage
SWAP to control the Main source.

System Configuration
The System Computer (SC263 or SC264) runs the Euphonix Emix software and pro-
vides the primary console configuration interface and file management. The computer
also houses the Euphonix TCC serial interface for monitor control, GPIO, and serial
machine control interface. The SC263 (S5B only) features SNMP status monitoring.
DAW Control
The SC264 provides a high-speed network interface with DAWs via the Euphonix
Eucon protocol. Through Eucon, the console can simultaeously control any combina-
tion of up to five DAWs, including Nuendo, ProTools, Logic Pro, and Pyramix. The
SC264 connects with DAWs via a 1000Base-T network switch.
Layouts
Once sources are assigned to physical faders, the assignments can be saved by
using Layouts. Layouts are used to store source assignments across the entire
console or assignments on a selected number of faders. Layouts can be stored
and later recalled to instantly remap the console surface. To understand Layouts,
consider the following examples:
•A console fitted with one CM408T has eight physical faders, therefore up to
sixteen sources can be assigned (Swap and Main per fader). A sample lay-
out may contain sixteen stereo sources assigned to the faders. A total of 32
logical channels could be controlled.
•Another layout may contain sixteen 5.1 sources to the Main and Swap lay-
ers. A total of 96 logical channels could be controlled.
•By recalling the layouts, the console is instantly remapped between the
sixteen stereo sources and sixteen 5.1 sources. Additional layouts can be
stored that contain only sources assigned to a particular set of faders.
Upon recall, only those faders included in the layout will be remapped.
I/O
Euphonix offers a variety of I/O solutions -- all employing MADI audio for connecting to
the DF66/CO600. These include Euphonix “Classic” stand-alone 2RU MADI converters
as well as a flexible Modular I/O system. These are described below:
Analog I/O
The AM713 Analog-to-MADI Converter and MA703 MADI-to-Analog Converter
are stand-alone 2RU units. The AM713 contains 26 analog inputs and 1 AES/SPDIF
input with SRC (2 channels). The MA703 contains 26 analog outputs and 1
AES/SPDIF output.

The Modular I/O system also contains a number of analog I/O modules:
•AD920 4ch Analog Input (XLR)
•DA921 4ch Analog Output (XLR)
•AD922 4ch Analog Input (D-sub)
•DA923 4ch Analog Output (D-sub)
Microphone
The ML530 Mic-Line Interface contains 24 remote-controlled mic preamps. Audio
outputs are fed to a dedicated AM713 Analog-to-MADI Converter for MADI con-
nection to the DF66/CO600. The ML530 is controlled via the Euphonix TCC serial
protocol (proprietary) by the System Computer. Up to seven ML530s may be de-
ployed in a system.
The Modular I/O system also includes two types of remote preamp modules:
•AD914 4ch Mic Input (RJ45)
•AD924 4ch Mic Input (XLR)
These are controlled by a TCP/IP connection to the main console network.
Digital I/O
The DM714 AES-to-MADI Converter and MD704 MADI-to-AES Converter are
stand-alone 2RU units. The DM714 contains 13 AES inputs (26 channels) with
SRC and 2 analog inputs. The MD704 contains 13 AES outputs and 2 analog out-
puts. Units are available with 110-ohm XLR or 75-ohm BNC connections.
The Modular I/O system also contains a number of AES I/O modules:
•DD908 4ch AES I/O (110-ohm XLR)
•DD909 8ch AES Input (110-ohm XLR)
•DD910 8ch AES Output (110-ohm XLR)
•DD911 4ch AES I/O (75-ohm BNC)
•DD912 8ch AES Input (75-ohm BNC)
•DD913 8ch AES Output (75-ohm BNC)
Format Conversion
The FC726 Format Converter is a bidirectional MADI converter, supplying 28 AES
inputs (56 channels) with SRC and 28 AES outputs. I/O are divided into 8-channel
“banks” designed to interface to multi-channel devices such as digital multitracks and

DAWs. In addition to AES/EBU I/O, the FC726 allows direct connection to seve-
ral third-party formats, including TDIF, SDIF-2, ADAT Optical, and MADI (via
SRCs!). AES/EBU outputs are always active even when using third-party formats.
Embedders/De-embedders
Four and eight-channel embedder/de-embedder modules are available in the Modu-
lar I/O system. These modules can simultaneously de-embed and embed audio
from/to a single video signal. SMPTE272M (SD) and SMPTE299M (HD) stan-
dards are supported. The HD943 module listed below has an auto-sensing input.
•SD941 4ch SD Embedder/De-embedder
•SD942 8ch SC Embedder/De-embedder
•HD943 8ch HD/SD Embedder/De-embedder
Modular I/O configurations consist of one or more 3RU double-sided frames with
redundant PSU that can be fitted with a variety of I/O modules. For interface to the
console, all signals are converted to/from MADI. Depending on the configuration,
a maximum signal density of 64 inputs and 64 outputs can be achieved on a single
MADI I/O.
Audio formats supported are remote-controlled preamp, line level analog, AES/EBU,
and HD/SD embedder/de-embedder. Additional modules handle sync, MADI I/O,
and remote-control interface.
Refer to the Euphonix Modular Configuration Guide for more details and configura-
tion possibilities.
Modular I/O
Monitoring
System 5 monitoring is handled by the MC524 Monitor-Comms Interface. This unit
provides Main (7.1), Alt 1 (5.1), and Alt 2 (stereo) control room speaker outputs; SLS
(7.1), and Cues 1-3 (each stereo) studio speaker outputs; 2 talkback mic preamps and
4 listen mic preamps. A dedicated MA703 MADI-toAnalog Converter feeds audio to
the MC524. The MA703 is connected to the DF66 MADI out 1, which is reserved for
monitor outputs. The MC524 is connected to the System Computer and is controlled
via the Euphonix TCC serial protocol.
SNMP
SNMP monitoring is available in the SC263 System Computer (S5B only), DF66 Su-
perCore, and the CO600 MADI Changeover Switch. SNMP modules are battery
backed-up and have an independent network connection.

Power
Most of the System 5 console components have dual power entry connectors for redun-
dant power supplies. Euphonix recommends deriving power from two different sources
to maximize the failsafe capabilities. The best case is to connect one power supply to a
UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) and the other to a clean technical power source. If a
UPS is not used, the power supplies should be connected to separately protected clean
technical power circuits.
Sync
A high quality sample-clock source is required for many System 5 components. These
include the DF66 SuperCore, CO600 MADI Changeover Switch, and all MADI I/O.
Wordclock or AES Sync (DARS) may be used. In addition, video sync is required for the
serial machine control interface (housed in the System Computer) to enable proper syn-
chronization.
Euphonix has tested several digital sync generators and distribution amplifiers and can
supply these devices with the console. Contact a Euphonix sales representative for further
information.
Euphonix recommends the following guidelines:
•Typically, Wordclock/AES Sync is derived via a converter from the facility’s
master video sync reference. Never employ multiple video sync-to-sample-
clock conversions in a single system. Separately derived sample-clocks may
not be in-phase.
•It is important to minimize the timing differences between signal paths to
avoid cumulative timing errors. Ideally, each distribution amplifier should be
fed directly from the master clock source.
•Never loop sync signals through multiple MADI converters. In this way, ti-
ming errors will not accumulate and powering one converter down will not
cause loss of sync to others.
NOTE:Drawings in this installation guide show the use of Word Clock. However,
AES Sync (DARS) or Word Clock may be used.

Ethernet
All primary system components are connected via RJ45 ethernet through a 100Base-T
ethernet switch. These devices include:

tion)
Monitor, Trackball, and Keyboard
The System Computer provides master control for the entire system. Monitor, mouse,
and keyboard are located in the control room and connect to this computer to allow con-
trol of configuration, routing, mixing, and file management.
A KVM extender is typically used which routes these signals from the machine room to
the control room through a single CAT-5 cable built into the console ethernet harness.
TCC Control
The System Computer connects to the MC524 Monitor-Comms Interface and up to
seven ML530 Mic-Line Interfaces via TCC connections.
Machine Control
The System Computer provides a 9-pin serial interface for connection to a serial
device or synchronizer (CB RM6 or Soundmaster). A MIDI interface and timecode
in/out are included on a separate 9-pin connector. A BNC input for video sync is availa-
ble for serial machine control reference.
GPIO
The System Computer provides 32 GP inputs and 32 GP outputs on two 37-pin DSub
connectors.

This section helps estimate the system requirements for a particular installation. Contact a
Euphonix representative for an exact specification. Use the following categories to deter-
mine the System 5 components necessary for your studio. Most of the details considered
here are relevant to any digital mixing system.

I/O Specification
The folowing tables summarize the I/O capabilities of Euphonix MADI converters. The
number of available MADI I/O on the DF66 depends on the number of SP662 DSP
cards. Each SP662 provides four MADI I/O for a maximum of 24 MADI inputs and 23
MADI outputs (MADI out 1 is reserved for the MA703/MC524 monitor connection).
In the case of modular I/O, only mic, analog, AES, and embedder/de-embedder modules
are shown. Refer to the Euphonix Modular I/O Configuration Guide for more details on
sync, MADI I/O, and remote control modules as well as general configuration require-
ments.
Number of CM408T Eight-channel Sections
One application may require a small, powerful console to control many sources from a
small number of faders. Other applications may trade console size for the power of ac-
cessing each input quickly without having to swap the fader or recall a Layout. Speci-
fy enough physical faders to conveniently control the required number of sources.
