gStrength User Manual

death could result in failure to use this device as it was intended. It is an assessment tool, not a life
saving device. Contact xsurgo Technologies if you are unsure how to use this product.
Before you egin:
When you receive your gStrength, you will need to do a few things to get going. We will go over how to
install batteries, download an app for your phone or tablet, download an app for your mac or pc.
Depending on what you use, these steps will help you set up your device. Do know this can take some
time to get right and we have tried to make it as seamless as possible.
PART 1: gStrength Battery and App/Program Install
Installing atteries:
When you get the gStrength, there are no batteries installed. To install batteries you will need the
following:
•A phillips or flat head screwdriver
•3 brand new AA batteries
Battery Install
1. Place the gStrength with the xsurgo
Tech logo facing up. There are 4 screws holding
the battery cover in place.
2. Remove the 4 screws and save them.
3. Remove the xsurgo Tech cover and
save it.
4. Install the 3 AA batteries making note of
the orientation of the batteries.
5. Once the batteries are installed,
proceed to installing an app or program.
Note: We typically leave the cover off until we
confirm connectivity and the device is working
properly. You can put the battery cover back on
if you wish or wait until the app install is
complete.
Installing an app or program:
To use the gStrength you need a way to be able to read the data coming from the device. We will outline
the apps we use and explain how to use the app but we will not go over how to download and install

software. As a tech user, you should know how to install apps to your phone or pc. It is up to you to
install the apps. We do not offer install trouble shooting tech support as every phone, tablet, pc, mac is
different.
Suggested apps we have used and verified as working with the gStrength:
Bluetooth to Phone/Tablet:
•For iOs: HM10 Bluetooth Serial
•For Android: Serial Bluetooth Terminal

USB to PC/MAC:
•For PC: Use T RA T RM *preferred* or RealTerm: Serial/TCP Terminal
•For MAC: Serial
PART 2: Powering up the gStrength, connecting and getting ready for DATA!
Once you have installed the app/program to your specific device, let’s go over powering up the
gStrength, connecting to it and the commands to get data out of the device.
Hopefully by now batteries are installed, an app is installed and you are ready to power up and connect.
If not, go back to PART 1. We will go over specific ways to connect as each app/program is a bit
different. The commands to get data out of the device are the same regardless of the way you connect.
When we made the gStrength, we wanted to give people options for connecting. You can connect by
Bluetooth or by using a usb cable to your computer. We will go over the Bluetooth connection first.

gStrength Bluetooth to iOs/Android connecting:
Note: Please make sure you have BL enabled on your phone. Please do not try to PAIR the device to your
phone. The connection is through the app. BL allows very easy connections to be made without having
to pair devices. PAIRING YOUR PHONE TO THE GSTRENGTH MAY RESULT IN WEIRD BEHAVIOR. DO NOT
DO IT!
1. Press the power button on the gStrength. Please make sure you have installed batteries as
outlined in PART 1.
2. Select the app you installed on your phone or tablet. Please make sure you have an app installed
as outlined in PART 1.
3. Once in the app, depending on which one you installed, you will need to connect to the device.
a. For Bluetooth Serial App, you will see a list of Bluetooth devices. “gStrength_xxx” should
be displayed. Click on it to connect.
i. If successful you will come to blank white console screen.
ii. If not successful you will see a “Failed” message. Repeat the connection process.
b. For Serial Bluetooth Terminal App, you will see a Terminal and a 3 line icon on the left.
Press the 3 line icon and a side menu will pop out. Select “Devices” then select
“Bluetooth L ” if not already selected, then select “Scan.” A list of devices will be
displayed. “gStrength_xxx” should be displayed. Click on it to connect. You will see a
“Connecting to gStrength_xxx …” message.
i. If successful you will see a “connected” message.
ii. If not successful you will see a “connection refused” message. Repeat the
connection process.
4. At this point, the commands are the same for either app and for usb to pc connectivity.
gStrength USB to PC/MAC connecting:
Note: To connect the gStrength to a PC/Mac you will need a usb to usb micro cable. This cable should be
about 6ft long. 3ft works but it can be too short. Also, the unit will work with no batteries installed as
well.
1. Plug the USB cable into the gStrength USB dongle.
2. Plug the other end of the USB into your computer.
3. Depending on the platform/OS you have, it will either be found automatically or need to search
for drivers.
a. On Windows 10, it will be found automatically in most cases.
b. On Windows 7, it will search for drivers and install by itself in most cases.
i. If there are issues with this process, please contact
support@exsurgo.zendesk.com and we will help you.
c. On Mac, it should be found automatically.
4. Open the program you installed.
a. For T RA T RM you will need to go here and follow the steps outlined.

5. For REAL Term, you will need to do the following:
i. Go to the PORT tab.
ii. Select “115200” from the Baud drop-down menu.
iii. Click on the drop-down arrow in Port.
iv. Click “ xhaustive Search.”
v. There should be a list of open ports. Look for something like “21” and select it.
vi. Click “Change” then click “Open.”
vii. Select the S ND tab.
6. At this point, the commands are the same for either app and for usb to pc connectivity.
PART 3: Commands to get data.
This is the part everyone is waiting for so let’s go over how to actually get data out of the gStrength.
Commands:
Q or q is used to start the 26ms Max ffort data stream
or e is used to start the 12ms Raw data stream
W or w is used to STOP
While the data is running:
T or t is used to Tare the scale. If you hang boards, cables, any attachments, you will need to
TAR the scale to get it to zero out the hanging attachments.
Data export:
ach program is different but you can save and export the data to be used in other programs.
For Bluetooth Serial App, click on the box with an up arrow in it and select “Plain Text” to email it to
yourself.
Serial Bluetooth Terminal App, click on the 3 vertical dots in the upper right hand corner and select
“Share” to email it to yourself.
For R ALTerm, select the Data in the terminal and copy it to paste into whatever you are using.
This should get you going with basic set up and implementation. We will be following up with more
