Introduction
Congratulations on your purchase of the Extech LED or LASER light source. Light
sources emit light at a certain wavelength in nanometers (nm), which is detected at the
other end of a fiber by a photo detector calibrated to the same wavelength. The center
wavelength of the light source is measured at the point of peak intensity. Light sources
emit a range of wavelengths, not just one. The difference between the lowest and the
highest frequency of light is called the spectral width. For practical purposes, spectral
width is measured at Full Width-Half Maximum (FWHM); the width (Full Width) is
measured at the point exactly halfway between zero power and peak power (Half
Maximum). Careful use of this source will provide years of reliable service.

WARRANTY
EXTECH INSTRUMENTS CORPORATION warrants the basic instrument to be free of
defects in parts and workmanship for one year from date of shipment (a six month limited
warranty applies on sensors and cables). If it should become necessary to return the
instrument for service during or beyond the warranty period, contact the Customer
Service Department at [phone] EXTENSION 210 for authorization or visit
www.extech.com for more information. A Return Authorization (RA) number must be
issued before any product is returned to Extech. The sender is responsible for
shipping charges, freight, insurance and proper packaging to prevent damage in transit.
This warranty does not apply to defects resulting from action of the user such as misuse,
improper wiring, operation outside of specification, improper maintenance or repair, or
unauthorized modification. Extech specifically disclaims any implied warranties or

Overview of the 850 and DUAL OWLs
The 850 OWL can test multi-mode fiber links such as premise LAN’s and voice PBX’s.
The 850nm LED provides a stable -20dBm output source. The LED indicator confirms
that the source is ON and that the battery has enough power to maintain its calibrated
output power. The Dual OWL can be used to perform dual wavelength testing that
conforms to EIA/TIA testing standards TIA/568-A and TIA/526-14A. The 850 OWL is
equipped with either ST (standard) or SC (additional cost) connectors. In addition, a
1310 or 1550 laser source, instead of a 1300nm LED, can be ordered (lasers are
available in ST, SC or FC connector styles).

Overview of the 1300 and DUAL OWLs
The 1300 OWL is a perfect match for The Fiber OWL II or Micro OWL optical power
meters. It is a fiber optic light source designed to test multimode fiber links such as data
LAN’s and voice PBX’s. The 1300nm LED provides power meters with a stable -20dBm
output source. The LED indicator confirms that the source is ON and that the battery has
enough power to maintain its calibrated output power. The 1300 OWL can be upgraded
to a Dual OWL by adding an 850nm LED light source. The Dual OWL can be used to
perform dual wavelength testing conforming to EIA/TIA testing standards TIA/568-A and
TIA/526-14A. The 1300 OWL is equipped with either ST (standard) or SC (additional
cost) connectors. Also, one additional laser source instead of an 850nm LED can be
obtained for the 1300 OWL. Select from the 1310 or the 1550 laser light source to fill the
empty DUAL OWL port. Lasers are available in ST, SC or FC connector styles.
Overview of the 1310, 1550, and Laser OWLs
The 1310, 1550 and Laser OWLs are laser-based light sources designed to test single
mode fiber optic links. They provide power meters with a stable –10dBm output.
Communications devices that use single mode laser light at 1310nm minimize chromatic
dispersion. Note that most glass optical fibers have minimal chromatic dispersion
characteristics near 1310nm. Communications devices that use single mode laser light
at 1550nm minimize optical attenuation.
The Fiber OWL II or Micro OWL optical power meters are ideal for use with the 1310,
1550 and Laser OWLs. The front panel LEDs indicate whether the unit is ON or OFF,
and whether the battery has enough power to maintain its calibrated output power. The
1310 OWL (or 1550 OWL) can be upgraded to a LASER OWL (combo of 1310 and 1550
OWLs) by adding a 1550nm (or 1310nm for the 1550 OWL) laser light source. The
LASER OWL can be used to perform dual wavelength testing that conforms to EIA/TIA
testing standards TIA/568-A and TIA/526-14A. The 1310, 1550, and Laser OWLs are
equipped with FC connectors (standard) or SC, ST connectors (additional cost).
Basic Operation
The selector switch on the top of the unit is used to select the desired wavelength (move
switch to the left or right). Return the switch to the center position to shut down the unit.
Note that if the indicator light on the selected wavelength is dim, replace the battery.
Caution: Never look directly into a powered light source.

Maintenance
Handling Tips
1. Do NOT drop the equipment; components on the circuit board may become dislodged.
2. Store the equipment in the carrying case in a cool dry area.
3. Replace the rubber cap on the connector when not in use to prevent dust and dirt from
getting inside the equipment.
Cleaning Tips
1. Use only 99% or better Isopropyl alcohol when cleaning the connectors. 99% Isopropyl
alcohol is very flammable; additional care must be taken when cleaning the detector.
2. Whenever possible, use specially designed 2.5mm cleaning sticks to clean the
connectors. These don’t require alcohol and don’t damage the inside of the connectors.
Do not use sticks or swabs of any other type; they may damage the inside of the
connector or may leave behind dust or fibers that will add loss to the fiber reading.
3. The connector ports should be cleaned at the beginning and end of the testing day to
keep connector loss to a minimum.
4. When cleaning the meter case do not use cleaners that contain ammonia.
Battery Replacement
1. The front panel LEDs dim if the 9V battery is too weak to function properly.
2. To replace the 9V battery, slide open the rear battery compartment, replace the
battery, and replace the compartment cover.

Extech offers complete repair and calibration services for all of the products we sell.
For periodic calibration, NIST certification or repair of any Extech product, call customer
service for details on services available. Extech recommends that calibration be performed
on an annual basis to insure calibration integrity.

Introducción
Felicitaciones por su compra de la fuente de luz láser o LED de Extech. Las fuentes de

Descripción general del 850 y DUAL OWL
El 850 OWL está mejor adaptado para ser empleado con el medidor de potencia óptica
Econo OWL. El 850 OWL está diseñado para probar enlaces de fibra múltimodo tales
como las instalaciones de LAN y PBX de voz locales. El LED de 850nm provee una
fuente estable de salida de 20dBm. El indicador LED confirma que la fuente está
encendida (ON) y que la batería tiene suficiente potencia para mantener su potencia
calibrada de salida. El 850 OWL puede ser actualizado a un Dual OWL agregando una
fuente de luz LED de 1300nm. El Dual OWL puede ser empleado para realizar pruebas
