These document describes the features, front and rear panel views, and light-emitting
diode (LED) description of the Summit
ª
Redundant Power Supply (RPS).

UMMARY OF
F
EATURES
The features of the Summit RPS are as follows:
¥ Provides redundant, load-shared power for up to two Summit Switches.
If the primary power supply for the Summit fails, the Summit RPS takes over,
ensuring uninterrupted network operation.
¥ Contains two active power supplies (each with its own AC power connector) that
share the load with the primary power supply located in the Summit Switches.
¥ Provides status on power supply and fan operation of the RPS by way of the
Summit Switch Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and command-line
interface (CLI).
Information regarding the RPS power supply and fan operation can be obtained by
using the
show switch command from the Summit Switch CLI.
¥ Uses a standard 2U, 19-inch rack mount.
¥ Has 110/220 VAC autosensing capability.
¥ Capable of driving 3.3V at 20A and 5V at 10A on each of its DC connectors.
¥ Supports only Extreme Networks Summit Switches.

Figure 1 shows the front panel view of the Summit RPS.

Table 1 describes the LED behavior on the Summit RPS.
If the RPS DC cables are not connected to a Summit Switch, but the AC power
cords are connected to an AC outlet, the RPS1 and RPS2 LEDs will blink. If one
of the cables is properly connected to a Summit Switch, but the remaining cable
is not, the unconnected cable will cause its associated RPS LED to blink.

RPS1 Green The first redundant power supply is powering a Summit Switch.
RPS2 Green The second redundancy power supply is powering a
Summit Switch.
OVER TEMP Off
Yellow The Summit RPS temperature is normal. The Summit RPS is indicating an overheat condition
(>60 degrees Celsius).
FAN FAIL Off
Yellow The Summit RPS fan is operating properly. The Summit RPS fan speed has slowed to 80 percent or less of
full rotational speed and should be replaced.

OCKETS
The Summit RPS has two AC power sockets. The upper AC power socket (power
socket A) provides power to one of the Summit RPS power supplies, which provides
redundant load-shared power to the Summit Switch that is connected to the RPS using
the upper RPS port (RPS port A).
The lower AC power socket (power socket B) provides power to the second RPS power
supply, which provides redundant load-shared power to the Summit Switch that is
connected to the RPS using the lower RPS port (RPS port B).
The upper power socket powers only the upper RPS port. The lower power
socket powers only the lower RPS port.
If you want to distribute the input AC power source across multiple, individual circuit
breakers, you must plug the Summit Switch AC power cord into a different circuit
breaker than the circuit breaker to which the RPS AC power socket is connected.

The Summit RPS has two RPS ports. Each port connects to a different Summit Switch.
Figure 3 shows the rear view of a rack that has one Summit Switch mounted above the
RPS and one Summit Switch mounted below RPS. The upper Switch is cabled to the
upper RPS port; the lower Switch is cabled to the lower RPS port.

Note that the upper power socket on the Summit RPS provides the AC source for
backup power for the upper Switch; the lower power socket provides the AC source for
backup power for the lower Switch.

To install the Summit RPS, follow these steps:
1 Mount the Summit RPS in the equipment rack, or, if the RPS will be located on a
table, place the rubber feet on the bottom of the Summit RPS.
For more information on installing the mounting brackets, see the Summit Switch
Installation and User Guide .
2 Using the supplied DC power cables, connect the cables of the RPS to each Summit
Switch.
The RPS DC cable must be connected to the Summit Switch prior to connecting
the respective RPS AC power cord to the AC outlet.
3 Tighten the screws connecting both sides of the RPS cable.
If you do not tighten the screws on both sides of the RPS cable, the cable could
come loose and emit sparks.
4 Connect an AC power cord to each power socket.
5 Plug the power cords into properly grounded AC outlets.
When disconnecting the RPS, the AC power cords must be removed from the
Summit RPS before removing the RPS DC cables.
