FAST®XFI SportsmanTM Installation Notes
Thank you for choosing FAST®products; we are proud to be your manufacturer of choice. Please read
this instruction sheet carefully before beginning installation, and also take a moment to review the
included limited warranty information. Contact us toll free at 1.877.334.8355, or visit us online at
www.fuelairspark.com under Tech Help with any questions.
Important!
Before beginning, install the included C-Com Sportsman software and open the help file. The
help file is the installation and instruction manual for the XFI Sportsman system.
The software is on a red and silver USB drive, not a disc. If you do not see the USB drive in the kit
box, check inside the yellow plug that protects the main connector on the XFI Sportsman ECU. You
can also download the software anytime for free by visiting www.fuelairspark.com.
To install the software, insert the USB drive into a USB port on your laptop. Navigate to it in
Windows Explorer so that you can see its contents. Double click on “FAST_Installer.exe”. Then click
on “Select Product”, “Sportsman XFI”and “Install C-Com Software”.
Once the software is installed, the help file can be accessed through the pull down menus by
selecting Help / Index. This will open a web browser window, such as Internet Explorer or Google
Chrome, but an internet connection is NOT required to view the help file.

Instructions and Tips for a Successful Installation
1. Make sure the black wire labeled “BATTERY NEG” connects directly to the battery negative
terminal. DO NOT connect it to the chassis, roll cage, a ground distribution terminal, the engine or
any point where other devices are grounded. Also, make sure the red wire labeled “BATTERY
POS” connects directly to the battery positive terminal. DO NOT connect it to a disconnect switch,
fuse panel, junction block or any point where other devices are powered. This is the #1 cause of
communication problems, operation problems, random shutdowns, random injector firing at key on
or other electrical “noise” or interference related problems. It is absolutely necessary to run the
“BATTERY NEG” and “BATTERY POS” wires independently all the way to the battery
terminals, even if you have to extend the wires to do so. These wires must be connected directly to
the lead battery terminals!
2. Make sure the pink wire labeled “12V SWITCHED” connects to a source that has voltage at key
on and during cranking.
3. On EZ-LS™ wiring harnesses and LS-application XIM™wiring harnesses, there is a ring terminal
labeled “BLOCK GND”. This should be connected to the engine block or a cylinder head.
4. If a CD type ignition amplifier is being used, make sure it is grounded directly to the engine block
or to one of the cylinder heads. Keep its heavy red and heavy black wires away from any parts of
the FAST wiring harness. This has proven to minimize electrical “noise” or interference. Also
make sure the wires (usually orange and black) that run from the ignition box to the + and –
terminals of the coil do not come in contact with, or run parallel to, any of the wires in the FAST
wiring harness. The same rule applies to the coil wire and all of the spark plug wires. These should
be kept as far away as possible from the FAST wiring harness to prevent electrical interference.
5. Do not use solid core type coil wire or spark plug wires with any EFI system.
6. Do not pass any other wires through the same grommet in the firewall as the FAST wiring harness.
7. Keep the charging wire from the alternator isolated away from the FAST wiring harness.
8. If you are using a FAST Dual-Sync Distributor, DO NOT follow the instructions included in the
box with it. The instructions included with the distributor refer to use with an XFI 2.0™system.
Instead, follow the instructions in section 4.5 of the help file.
9. In any Roots blower application, the MAP sensor and air temp sensor must be installed in, or
connected to, the manifold underneath the blower. Most manifolds will need to be drilled and
tapped (3/8” NPT) for the air temp sensor before installation.
10. The USB communication cable from your laptop plugs directly into a port on the ECU. The port
is to the right of the main connector and has a rubber plug installed to protect it.
If You Experience Connection Problems
1. Make sure the green “POWER” and “SWIGN” LEDs are lit on the ECU.
2. Check the blue “CRANK/DIAG” LED on the ECU. If it is flashing slowly (about once per
second), then the ECU is in Flash mode. This mode will not allow normal communication with the
laptop. To get out of Flash mode, turn the ignition off and wait for all of the LEDs to go out. Next,
hold the throttle all the way open and turn the ignition on. The ECU should power up normally,
and the blue LED should no longer be flashing.
3. Make sure you are communicating on the proper COM port. To do this, get to the Device Manager
in Windows on your laptop and expand the “Ports” listing by clicking on the + beside “Ports”. Look
for a listing that shows “USB Serial Port (COM?)”. The COM port listed here is the one that has been

assigned to your ECU.
Go into your C-Com Sportsman software, select Communications / Setup, click the “COM Port”
tab and select the appropriate COM port.
4. If you do not see “USB Serial Port (COM?)”when your ECU is plugged into one of your USB
ports, then the driver was not successfully installed. If this is the case, use the FAST USB drive
again and click on “Select Product”, “Sportsman XFI”and “Install USB Drivers”.
5. If you get a message that says “Incompatible Device”, you have a software/firmware mismatch. To
remedy this, make sure you have the most current version of C-Com Sportsman software
available. Check the FAST website at www.fuelairspark.com. Go to TECH SUPPORT and then
FAST PRODUCT SOFTWARE. If your installed C-Com Sportsman software does not match the
version available on the website, download and install the latest version. Then go to the help file
and read the instructions for flashing the ECU in section 11.9. Flash your ECU with the latest
listed firmware. You should then be able to communicate with it.
6. If you can communicate with the ECU, but sensor readings and changes to tables are slow to react,
then you need to optimize the USB settings. See section 20 in the help file for details.
