DEALING WITH DUST
Dust, like thirst, may go away
for a while, but it always comes
back. And when it comes back it
requires attention. But you
shouldn’t fear that dusting is
tremendously time-consuming.
Truly, dusting is one of life’s
lighter chores! Equipped with
basic information, plus some
simple techniques described
here, you’ll soon be dealing with
dust like a pro!
What is dust? Rather than a
single substance, so-called house
dust is a varied mixture of
potentially allergenic materials. It
may contain fibers from different
types of fabrics; cotton lint,
feathers, and other stuffing
materials; dander from cats,
dogs, and other animals;
bacteria; mold and fungus spores
(especially in damp areas); food
particles; bits of plants and
insects; and other allergens
unique to an individual home.
House dust also contains
microscopic dust mites. These
mites, which live in bedding,
upholstered furniture, and
carpet, thrive in summer and die
in winter. In a warm, humid
house, however, they continue to
thrive in the coldest months. The
particles seen floating in a shaft
of sunlight include dead dust
mites and their waste-products.
These waste-products, which are
proteins, can actually provoke
allergic reactions.

Why fight dust? Because dust
makes us look like bad
housekeepers and it aggravates
allergies. Tiny as they are, many
components of dust can be quite
abrasive, so we want to keep it
from scratching and grinding on
things. Accumulated dust will
wear away both carpeting and
hard floors, and it wreaks havoc
with electronic equipment.
About 40 pounds of dust
settle in the average home
each year. The air in the average
home has about twice as much
dust as the air outside, and many
particles are so small that they
never settle—they just float
around constantly.
Dust bunnies. Some dust falls
out of the air and settles into
quiet places such as under
furniture, in back of the
refrigerator, beneath the
stove…out-of-the-way corners
where it lays undisturbed and
builds up into balls and clumps
of fuzz.
Dust allergies. Sneezing is not
always the symptom of a cold.
Sometimes, it is an allergic
reaction to something in the air.
Studies have found that 38
percent of Americans suffer from
allergies. One leading type of
allergen that causes allergic
reactions is dust particles. In fact,
worldwide, airborne dust causes
the most problems for people
with allergies.

Some 80% of the dirt in your
house enters with people and
pets—tracked in.
Place doormats outside all
entrances to stop that dirt in
its tracks…clean them as
necessary.
Feel a draft coming through
a door or a loose window
frame? That draft may
carry in dust or dirt. Fill
cracks and holes leading
outside with caulking or
weather-stripping.
Replace or clean your furnace
and air conditioner filters as
recommended.
Make sure your vacuum
cleaner isn’t leaking dust.
Use a vacuum with HEPA
filtration to filter out dust
and allergens.
See that all raw concrete
floors are sealed.
Reduce clutter—always
recycle magazines and
newspapers instead of
letting them pile up—dust
will have less chance to
sneak up on you.
Carpeting also collects dust.
You might consider polished
hardwood floors or area rugs

that can be easily washed
to make dust control easier.
Dust with a lambswool

Dust from top to bottom.
The dust won’t fall where you’ve
already cleaned.
Dust with a smooth wiping
motion. If you flick your tool or
cloth, dust will fall to the floor
instead of getting trapped.
Turn your duster or cloth over
to a clean side. As it gets loaded
up, shake it out or replace it
otherwise you’ll start spreading
dust rather than collecting it.
Dust before you vacuum.
A quality vacuum with HEPA
filtration will pick up dust that
has fallen to your floors and low
lying areas.
Don’t use furniture polish
every time you dust. The polish
will build up into a sticky, streaky
coating that attracts dust.
Ventilate. Open windows wide
as often as you can. Ventilation
greatly helps reduce the
concentration of dust.

How often should you dust?
It depends on your personal
preference for cleanliness,
how much time you have and
whether or not you have
allergies or asthma.
Cleaning experts recommend:
Touch-ups—If time is tight,
only dust the areas you plan to
immediately use, such as
tables, chairs and countertops
before company arrives.
Once a week—furniture and
the whole house once over
lightly.
Once a month—door frames,
woodwork, blinds, drapes,
valances, light fixtures,
lampshades, upholstered
furniture and de-cobweb.
Twice a year—rafters,
exposed beams, grills and
vents, walls and ceilings.
