Supply Pressure Requirements
WARNING
Personal injury or property damage may
occur from an uncontrolled process if
the supply medium is not a clean, dry,
oil-free, or non-corrosive gas. Industry
instrument air quality standards de-
scribe acceptable dirt, oil, and moisture
content. Due to the variability in nature
of the problems these influences can
have on pneumatic equipment, Fisher
Controls has no technical basis to rec-
ommend the level of filtration equipment
required to prevent performance degra-
dation of pneumatic equipment. A filter
or filter regulator capable of removing
particles 40 microns in diameter should
suffice for most applications. Use of
suitable filtration equipment and the es-
tablishment of a maintenance cycle to
monitor its operation is recommended.

Vent
WARNING
If a flammable, toxic, or reactive gas is
to be used as the supply pressure me-
dium, personal injury and property dam-
age could result from fire or explosion
of accumulated gas or from contact with
toxic or reactive gas. The transducer/ac-
tuator assembly does not form a gas-
tight seal, and when the assembly is en-
closed, a remote vent line, adequate
ventilation, and necessary safety mea-
sures should be used. A remote vent
pipe alone cannot be relied upon to re-
move all hazardous gas. Vent line pip-
ing should comply with local and re-
gional codes and should be as short as
possible with adequate inside diameter
and few bends to remove exhaust gases
to a ventilated area.

housing cap.
For explosion-proof Class 1, Division 1
applications using metal conduit, install
a conduit seal no more than 18 inches
(457 mm) from the transducer. Personal
injury or property damage may result
from explosion if the seal is not
installed. For other explosion-proof ap-
plications, install the transducer in ac-
cordance with applicable codes.
For intrinsically safe installations, refer
to the nameplate and loop schematics at
the back of this manual (for CSA and
FM), or to instructions provided by the
barrier manufacturer, for proper wiring
and installation.

CAUTION
The presence of Fisher Controls person-
nel and also approval agency personnel
may be required if you service (other
than normal, routine maintenance, such
as calibration) or replace components
on a Type 646 that carries a third-party
approval. When you replace compo-
nents, use only components specified
by the factory. Substitution with other
components may void the third-party
approval. Also, always use proper com-
ponent replacement techniques, as pre-
sented in this manual. Improper tech-
niques can cause poor quality repairs
and impair the safety features of the de-
vice.
The converter module should never be
disassembled because the magnetism
in the coils will decrease permanently. If
troubleshooting or alignment attempts
indicate a faulty converter module, re-
place the module or return the transduc-
er to your Fisher Controls sales office or
sales representative for repair.
