TheoptimumheightfortheQuantum™scannerisa
locationthatishighenoughabovethewaterlineto
givealongrangeline-of-sighttothehorizon,butnot
sohighastobeadverselyaffectedbythevessel's
pitchingandrolling.
Thescannermustalsobemountedwhereitis:
•Aboveheadheight.
•Easilyaccessible.
•Asnearaspossibletothevessel'scenterline.
•Onarigidandstableplatform,capableofsecurely
supportingthescannerunderseagoingconditions.
•Clearoflargeobjectssuchastheybridge,
largeenginestacks,searchlights,horns,masts
etc.(seeShadowareasandfalseechoesfor
additionalinformation).
•Clearofheatandfumes.
•Atleast1m(3ft)fromamagneticcompassor
otherscanners.
Shadowareasandfalseechoes
MounttheRadarscannerawayfromlargestructures
orequipment,suchasenginestacks,searchlights,
horns,ormasts.Theseobjectsmaycauseshadow
areasandfalseechoes.Forexample,ifyou
mounttheRadarscanneronamast,echoesfrom
othertargetsmaybereectedfromthemast.Wet
sailsmayalsocauseshadowareas,soRadar
performancemaybereducedintherain.Itis
particularlyimportanttoavoidshadowareasnearthe
bow.RaisingorevenloweringtheRadarscanner
mayhelptoreducetheseeffects.
Inshadowareasbeyondtheobstructiontherewillbe
areductionofthebeamintensity.Theremaybea
blindsectorifthebeamintensityisnotsufcientto
obtainanechofromanobject.Thismayoccureven
atcloserange.Forthisreasontheangularwidth
andrelativebearingofanyshadowareamustbe
determinedatinstallation.
Youmaybeabletodetectshadowareasorfalse
echoesonyourmultifunctiondisplay.Forexample,
seacluttercanbeusedasagoodindicatorofblind
arcs.DarksectorsontheRadardisplayindicate
possibleshadowedareas.Thisinformationshould
bepostednearthedisplayunitandoperatorsmust
bealertfortargetsintheseblindareas.

EnsuretheRadarscannerrotatesparalleltothe
waterline.
TheRadarbeamfromtheRadarscanneris
approximately20°wideintheverticaldirection,to
givegoodtargetdetectionevenwhenyourvessel
pitchesandrolls.
Planinghullvessels,andsomedisplacementhull
vessels,adoptahigherbowanglewhenthevesselis
atcruisingspeed.ThismayraisetheRadar’smain
radiationangle,andcancausepoordetectionof
nearbytargets.Itmaybenecessarytocompensate
forthebowrisetoensureoptimumtargetdetection.
Thiscanbeachievedbyttingawedgeorwashers
betweenthemountingplatformandthebaseofthe
Radarscanner,sothattheRadarbeamremains
paralleltothewaterlinewhenthevessel'sbowrises
atcruisingspeed.

3.9QuantumWi-Fionly
installationrequirements
WhilsttheWi-Fiperformancehasbeentestedand
proveninmanydifferentinstallationscenarios,the
requirementsbelowmustbetakenintoconsideration
beforechoosingalocationfortheQuantum™Radar.
InsystemswithmultipleMFDs,theRadarshould
beconnectedtotheMFDsthatarelocatedclosest
toit,ortotheMFDswiththeclearestlineofsightto
theRadar.
ThemaximumdistancebetweenMFDandRadar
willvarydependingontheinstallationenvironment
(i.e.obstructionsandinterference).

reliableconnectionispossibleatdistancesupto100
m(328feet).However,therearemanyfactorsthat
caninuencethissoapre-installationsitesurvey

•Radarmounting—Thetypeofinstallationcan
impactperformance;forexample,mountingona
solidsteelplatformwillhaveagreaterimpacton
performancethanmountingonabar-stylemount.
•Electricalequipmentandotherobjects—
Anyobjectinthedirectline-of-sightbetweenthe
RadarandMFDcanimpactWi-Fiperformance.
Electrical,electronicandelectromagneticdevices
willhaveagreaterimpactthanfurniture.
•MFDinstallation—MFDinstallationcanalso
impactWi-Fiperformance;forexample,iftheMFD
issurfacemountedinasteelconstructiondash,
theWi-Fiperformancewillbeimpacted.
Wi-FiSignalReection
WhenestablishingalocationforyourQuantum
Radar,thatwillbeconnectedusingaWi-Fi
connection,itisimportanttoconsidertheeffects
yoursurroundingscanhaveontheWi-Fisignal.The
Wi-Fisignalwillreector‘bounce’offnearbyobjects
whichmaycreateaneasierpathforthesignalto
take,whilstyourconnectionmayappearreliableit
mayquicklydegradewhenyoutakeyourvesselout
intoopenwater.

ThedistancebetweenWi-Fiproductsshouldalways
bekepttoaminimum.Donotexceedthemaximum
statedrangeofyourWi-Fiproduct(Maximumrange
willvaryforeachdevice).
Wi-Fiperformancedegradesoverdistanceso
productsfartherawaywillreceivelessnetwork
bandwidth.Productsinstalledclosetotheir
maximumWi-Firangemayexperienceslow
connectionspeeds,signaldropoutsornotbeing

structuralbulkheadsandroongwillreduceandin
certainsituations,blocktheWi-Fisignal.
IftheWi-Fisignalpassesthroughabulkhead
containingpowercablesthiscanalsodegradeWi-Fi
performance.

typesofglassandevenmirrorscandrasticallyeffect
performanceorevenblocktheWi-Fisignal.
