Precautions
Important Safety Warnings
[Power]
Operate unit only on the specified supply voltage.
Disconnect power cord by connector only. Do not pull on cable portion.
Do not place or drop heavy or sharp-edged objects on power cord. A damaged cord
can cause fire or electrical shock hazards. Regularly check power cord for
excessive wear or damage to avoid possible fire / electrical hazards.
[Grounding]
Ensure unit is properly grounded at all times to prevent electrical shock hazard.
Do not ground the unit to gas lines, units, or fixtures of an explosive or dangerous
nature.
Ensure power cord is firmly plugged into AC outlet.
[Operation]
Do not operate unit in hazardous or potentially explosive atmospheres. Doing so
could result in fire, explosion, or other dangerous results.
Do not allow liquids, metal pieces, or other foreign materials to enter the unit. Doing
so could result in fire, other hazards, or unit malfunction.
If foreign material does enter the unit, turn power off and disconnect power cord
immediately. Remove material and contact authorized service representative if
damage has occurred.
[Transportation]
Handle with care to avoid shocks in transit. Shocks may cause malfunction. When
you need to transport the unit, use the original packing materials or alternate
adequate packing.

[Circuitry Access]
Do not remove covers, panels, casing, or access circuitry with power applied to the
unit! Turn power off and disconnect power cord prior to removal. Internal servicing /
adjustment of unit should only be performed by qualified personnel.
Do not touch any parts / circuitry with a high heat factor.
Capacitors can retain enough electric charge to cause mild to serious shock, even
after power is disconnected. Capacitors associated with the power supply are
especially hazardous. Avoid contact with any capacitors.
Unit should not be operated or stored with cover, panels, and / or casing removed.
Operating unit with circuitry exposed could result in electric shock / fire hazards or
unit malfunction.
[Potential Hazards]
If abnormal smells or noises are noticed coming from the unit, turn power off
immediately and disconnect power cord to avoid potentially hazardous conditions. If
problems similar to above occur, contact authorized service representative before
attempting to again operate unit.
[Consumables]
The consumables used in unit must be replaced periodically. For further details on
which parts are consumables and when they should be replaced, refer to the
specifications at the end of the Operation Manual. Since the service life of the
consumables varies greatly depending on the environment in which they are used,
they should be replaced at an early date. For details on replacing the consumables,
contact your dealer.
[Rubber Feet]
If this product has come with rubber feet attached by screws, do not insert the
screws again without rubber feet after removing the rubber feet and screws. It may
cause damage to the internal circuits or components of the unit. To install the rubber
feet again to the unit, do not use other than the supplied rubber feet and screws.

The MV-160HS units and their accessories are fully inspected and adjusted prior to shipment.
Operation can be performed immediately upon completing all required connections and
operational settings.

1. Prior to Starting

Congratulations! By purchasing MV-160HS Multi Viewer you have entered the world of FOR-A
and its many innovative products. Thank you for your patronage and we hope you will turn to
FOR-A products again and again to satisfy your video and audio needs.
FOR-A provides a wide range of products, from basic support units to complex system
controllers, which have been increasingly joined by products for computer video based systems.

1-2. About the MV-160HS
The MV-160HS is a 16-split multi viewer that accepts up to 16 HD/SD-SDI signals.
The embedded audio level meter can be displayed for each input, so that it is easy to see the
audio signal is or is not present. It also supports 7 preset display patterns including 16-split
screen. These features make MV-160HS the most ideal for monitoring HD/SD-SDI video
signals and audio signals.

1-3. About This Manual
This manual is intended to help the user easily operate the MV-160HS and make full use of its
functions during operations. Before connecting or operating your unit, read this operation
manual thoroughly to ensure you understand the product. After reading, it is important to keep
this manual in a safe place and available for reference.
Font Conventions
The following conventions are used through out this manual:
Circled text (for example ENTER) is used for buttons.

installed in the unit stopped. -

for at least 3 seconds.

3. Split Screen Patterns and Window Layout
3-1. Split Screen Patterns
MV-160HS offers following preset split screen patterns besides full screen display. These
preset split screens can be chosen by SPLIT buttons on the front panel. See section 4-3.
"Displaying Split Screen" for details.
Split Screen Patterns and Windows
The preset split screen patterns of MV-160HS are consist of windows and groups. The
numbers in each window in the figures above are window numbers, and the GRP1, 2, 3 and
4 indicate groups. Each group can be set to full or quad display. Changing group display can
add more variations of split screens. (See section 4-8-2. "GROUP Window Full/Quad
Display Settings".) Regarding group, see section 3-2. "Group Output". Window positions
both in groups and split screen are fixed. The assignments of input videos to windows are
free. The video assignments can be made in WINDOW menu. (See section 4-4. "Assigning
Input Video to Window" for details.)
Window settings
Window display can be arranged for each window respectively. See section 4-5."Setting
Window Display" and 6-1. "WINDOW Menu" for details.

3-2. Group Output
FULL/QUAD OUTPUT 1 to 4 are connecters for GROUP outputs. Each group connector, group
1 (GRP1), group 2 (GRP2), group 3 (GRP3) and group 4 (GRP4), outputs corresponding 4
windows in full or quad screen mode. The display mode can be set for respective groups. See
section 4-8. "GROUP Menu Settings" and 6-2. "GROUP Menu" for details.
When preset split screen consists of a combination with GRP is selected, the GRP display
corresponds to the GRP FULL/QUAD output. When quad screen (split screen consists of 4
groups) is selected, output signals at HD/SD OUT 1, HD/SD OUT 2 and FULL/QUAD 1 to 4 are
as below.

3-3. Window Display Layout
Title, Sign marker (tally display), Frame marker and Audio level meter can be added to windows
respectively. Border can be also added to the windows of preset 6 patterns that can be selected
by buttons on the front panel.
The example below is 16 split screen. The figure below is focusing on 4 windows of 16 split
screen. There are two types of display layout, MODE 1 and MODE 2, to select. The selection
can be made in GROUP menu. Default setting is MODE 2.

4. Operating Procedure
4-1. Operation at Startup
Assure all the necessary connections, and turn ON the power switches on the front panel. After
the power is turned ON, operation resumes from the last screen when it was turned OFF.
If menu is displayed when the unit was turned OFF, operation resumes from the screen
previous to the menu display.
4-2. Displaying Full Screen
1) Press full screen display button on the front panel.
2) Press the desired WINDOW button 1 to 16 to display in full screen.

1) Press the corresponding SPLIT control button to display desired split screen. When a SPLIT
button is pressed, the output screen changes the screen display to the selected split screen.

Windows without video output displays black screen.

The following split screen patterns are available. The numbers in each window are
window numbers. Window layouts are fixed. Press WINDOW NUBER button to display
window number in windows. Input videos can be assigned to desired windows. The
video assignment can be made in WINDOW menu. (See section 4-4. "Assigning Input
Video to Window".)

4-4. Assigning Input Video to Window
The following is the procedure to assign an input video to a window. This example is the
procedure to assign INPUT 5 to WINDOW 3 in 16 split screen mode.
1) Press the 16 split screen button among SPLIT buttons.
2) Press WINDOW button 3 .
3) WINDOW menu as below will be displayed on the output screen (HD/SD OUT 1 and 2).
4) Move the cursor to the box below INPUT by using ↓button.
5) Select 5 by using ←→buttons.
6) Press MENU CLEAR button to close menu screen.
IMPORTANT
See section 6-1. "WINDOW Menu" for details on WINDOW menu.
Menu display is not available in full screen mode and/or on GROUP outputs.
NOTE
In quad screen mode, windows 1, 3, 9 and 11 are displayed. Assign input videos for
those four windows.

4-5. Setting Window Display
This section explains how to set window display with examples.
Firstly, let's set a title "CAMERA1" for window 1. Then add a frame marker and an audio level
meter. Lastly, set a title for window 2 the same as window 1 and change the title for window 2 to
"CAMERA2".
IMPORTANT
Window title and frame marker can be selected from standard type, which has 16 color
options, and tally relay type, which has RED, GREEN and UMBER color options.
When selecting tally relay type, select TALLY for the menu item EN in TITLE or
FRAME of WINDOW menu. For tally input, see section 7-1. "Tally Input (TALLY IN)".
4-5-1. Adding Title
The followings are the procedure to set a title "CAMERA1" to window 1 in red.
1) Press WINDOW button 1 to enter WINDOW menu.
2) Press →button and move the cursor to TITLE. The menu as below will be displayed.
3) Press ↓←button and move the cursor to OFF below EN. Change the value to ON by
using →←buttons. (To link with tally input, change the value to TALLY. See section 4-6.
"Tally Settings".)
4) Move the cursor to SET below NAME by using ↑→↓buttons, and press ENTER
button. The title character window will be displayed.
a) Select "C" by using ←→and ↑↓buttons, and press STEP button. The cursor
automatically moves to the right.
b) Select "A" by using ↑↓buttons, and press STEP button.
c) Select other characters in the same way to complete "CAMERA1".
d) After entering all characters, press ENTER button to confirm the setting.

5) Move the cursor to the box below COLOR by using ↑→↓buttons. Select RED1 by
using ←→buttons.
6) Select a value for SIZE from 3 options.
7) The position can be adjusted in the menu item POS-X and POS-Y.
8) After confirming the setting, press ↑button to move to other menu item. Press MENU
CLEAR button to exit WINDOW menu and go back to video display.
