INTRODUCTION
Overview
The Fire Research ICA700 intercom is designed to meet rescue and fire service
requirements for a two, three, or four-way voice communications system. (More than
four intercom boxes can be connected when using the ICA700.) The hands free intercom
system is weather-resistant and specifically designed for outside use on fire service
apparatus. A high level output signal ensures high quality sound even when the wires
are routed through an aerial turntable.
The ICA700 hands free intercom is voice activated. When power is applied the
intercom is in receive mode. To talk on the intercom the operator speaks and the intercom
automatically switches to transmit mode.
There is a rocker switch on the bottom of each standard station box so it can be
set to hands free or PTT (Press-To-Talk) mode. The PTT indicator LED will flash to
indicate that the PTT mode has been selected. In this mode the PTT switch on the
station box must be pressed to transmit.
Two optional configurations are available:
PTT (Push-To-Talk) Only - The PTT button must be pressed to transmit. There
is no mode selector switch or indicator LED on this station box.
Hands Free Only - The station box is always in transmit mode unless interrupted
by a transmission from another station. There is no mode selector switch, PTT
button, or indicator LED.

INSTALLATION
General Installation Notes
Mount the intercom stations in locations that are safe and convenient for use.
Consider potential background noise that a hands free station might pick up.
If excess background noise is picked up by the hands free station due to vibration,
mounting it on a rubber pad can help reduce noise.
Ensure a good ground connection. Isolate the intercom ground wire from other
grounds that can be noisy (strobes, radios, priming motors, etc.).
Make interconnecting cable runs as short as possible.
Secure excess intercom cable in a figure-eight pattern.
12 VDC power is connected at one station location, that station then provides
power to all the other stations (except when the aerial station option is used).
Note: Station box mounting hardware is not included, 10-32 hardware is
recommended.
Install Stations
1. Measure and mark station box locations. Refer to Figure 1 for layout and
dimensions.
2. Drill four mounting holes at each station box location for mounting
hardware.
Note: Cables are provided to make all connections. Pre-installed apparatus
wiring can be used. Four wires are required except when aerial station
cables are used. (Refer to Figure 2.)
3. Connect station box cables to interconnecting cables or installed wiring. Refer
to Figure 3 for wiring details.
Note: Supply power can be wired to any station box. Only one power
connection is required except when aerial station cables are used. Supply
power required is 250 mA/station box.
4. Connect black power ground wire to ground.
5. Connect red power wire to +12 VDC.

OPERATION
Basic Two-Way System
The basic two-way intercom system includes two stations each with a VOLUME
control, a hands free or PTT mode select rocker switch, PTT indicator LED, and PTT
button. The ICA700 hands free intercom can transmit and receive from all stations.
The system automatically controls which station is in transmit mode.
Two optional configurations will not have the mode select rocker switch
installed:
Intercoms that have the Push-To-Talk Only option must have the PTT button
pressed to transmit.
Intercoms that have the Hands Free Only option are voice activated to transmit.
Basic Three or Four-Way System
The basic three or four-way system operation is the same as the basic two-way
system. (More than four intercom boxes can be connected when using the ICA700.)
External Microphone (Option)
The external microphone option provides a separate hands free microphone that is
mounted away from the station box. When the external microphone cable is connected
the station box internal microphone is disabled. Make sure the mode select rocker switch
is placed in the hands free position. The basic system check should be performed prior
to connecting the external microphone.

Operational Check
Basic System Check
1. Turn on 12 VDC power to intercom.
2. Set mode select rocker switches to hands free mode on station boxes.
3. Speak into the station box.
Result: Voice is heard at all stations. (Adjust volume knob for receive level.)
4. Repeat step 3 at each station box.
PTT Check
Perform this test for each station that has the PTT function enabled.
1. Set mode select rocker switch for PTT operation.
Result: Mode indicator LED flashes.
2. Speak into the station box.
Result: Voice is not heard at any station.
3. Press PTT button and speak into station box.
Result: Voice is heard at all stations.
4. Repeat for each station.
External Microphone Check
If a standard station box is used, make sure the mode select rocker switch is placed
in the hands free position.
1. Plug the external microphone cable into the station box.
2. Speak into the station box.
Result: Voice is not heard at any station.
3. Speak into the external microphone.
Result: Voice is heard at all stations.
