Introduction
This document describes how to install the Alula BAT-Connect within the Gallagher SMB Kit.
Detailed installation instructions specific to the BAT-Connect can be viewed here.
The Alula BAT-Connect is an alarm communicator, transmitting alarms from the Gallagher
SMB Controller to a monitoring station using the Contact ID alarms transmission protocol.
The Alula BAT-Connect is powered by the Gallagher SMB Kit and provides connection to the
site's WAN, cellular, or Wi-Fi.
Kit contents
The SMB Monitoring Kit includes the following components:
• 1 x Alula BAT-Connect (C500616)
• 1 x Alula Antenna 2.5m (C500617)
• 1 x PSTN Dialler (C200620)
• 1 x Wiring loom and adhesive tape

Installation
The installation of this kit must be carried out by a Gallagher SMB Partner. Complete the
instructions in this document to install the kit.
ATTENTION: This equipment contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic
discharge. Ensure both you and the equipment are earthed before beginning any servicing.
1. Mounting the Alula device
The Alula BAT-Connect must be installed inside the cabinet door. It should be located 1-1.5
inches from the top of the door, and 1-1.5 inches from the right-hand side of the door, using
the 3M adhesive tape supplied.
Using the alcohol wipe supplied with the adhesive tape, clean the back surface of the device
and the area on the door where the device will go. Peel off the white colored backing film and
carefully position the tape in the center on the back of the device. Mark on the door where the
device will go. When ready to attach the device to the cabinet door, remove the red film and
attach it to the door. Make sure the device’s electrical connectors are on the right-hand side.
The device will sit overtop of the vertical I/O board when the cabinet door is closed.
Note: The adhesive tape’s bond is extremely strong, so make sure the Alula is in the correct
position before pressing it against the door to make the bond.
2. Attaching the Antenna
The recommended antenna location is above the cabinet, an extension antenna is part of the
Monitoring Kit. To attach the extension antenna:
1. Open the device and pull on the internal antenna’s MMCX connector to disconnect it from
the board.
2. Thread the MMCX connector-end of the extension antenna cable through a knockout into
the metal cabinet. Use a suitable gland in the opening to secure and protect the cable.
3. Connect the MMCX plug on the extension antenna cable to the socket on the Alula board.
4. Route the antenna’s cable out through the right-hand side of the Alula where the long
green connector is. Once the main wiring loom has been connected to the Alula, secure
the antenna's cable to the wiring loom with cable ties to prevent it from getting crushed
when the cabinet door gets closed.
5. Ensure nothing is obstructing the external antenna and there is a decent amount of space
above it.

3. Inserting the PSTN Dialer
The Gallagher PSTN Dialer is supported by the Gallagher Controller for both Contact ID
transmission and remote/PPP dial-up situations.
The dialer is housed in the same cabinet as the controller and is mounted on top of the
controller via the serial port. Secure the dialer to the controller using the 2 screws supplied.
With a dialer mounted on the controller, the controller's run LED is still readily visible.
4. Connecting the Wiring Loom
The wiring loom is used to join the Alula to the Dialer and the D8 module.
Alula
Connect the red to 12V, black to GND, wht/blue to RING, and blue/wht to TIP. Secure the
wireset tightly to the Alula’s enclosure using the cable tie that is supplied in the wireset kit.
This acts as a strain relief.
PSTN Dialer
Connect the red to VIN, black to 0V, wht/blue to RING IN, and blue/wht to TIP IN.
D8 Module
Connect red to Out7 “+”, and black to Out7 “-“. Set jumper JP7 to position 2 (for 12V output
instead of position 1’s 24V).
4. Setting Network Communication Path
Connecting via ethernet
Connect an ethernet cable from the Alula's ethernet port to the customer's network and
ensure the ethernet's LED is on.
Connecting via cellular
Verify the cellular LED is on and verify signal strength. A minimum of two signal bar LEDs is
recommended.

Connecting via Wi-Fi
Connecting via WPS
1. Enable WPS on the router.
2. Press and hold the WPS button on the Alula BAT-Connect until the Wi-Fi LED flashes.
3. Unplug the ethernet cable (if used). After approximately 1-2 minutes, the Wi-Fi LED will
turn on. Wi-Fi network credentials are now saved on the Alula BAT-Connect.
4. If the Wi-Fi LED does not turn on after 2 minutes, then WPS was not successful. Repeat
steps 1-3.
Connecting via AlulaConnect™ (if WPS is unavailable)
1. Wi-Fi credentials can be entered at alulaconnect.com. For the Wi-Fi credentials to be
pushed from AlulaConnect, the BAT-Connect must be online.
2. Go to Account > Account Devices > BAT-Connect > Communication > Primary Wi-Fi
Credentials (Enter information) > Save.
3. The Wi-Fi LED will turn on (this may take up to 2 minutes.) Wi-Fi network credentials
are now saved in BAT-Connect. Note: It should switch to Wi-Fi, regardless of the active
interface previously used (ethernet or cell).
4. If the Wi-Fi LED does not turn on after 2 minutes:
- Repeat step 2, verifying that the credentials entered are correct.
- Verify the BAT-Connect is online.
5. Ensure the UDP ports 1234 and 1235 are open on the customers’ network.
