IMPORTANTSAFETYNOTICE
The California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act requires the Governor of California to
publish alist of substances known to the state to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm, and
requires businesses to warn customers of potential exposure to such substances.
Gas appliances can cause minor exposure to four of these substances, namelg benzene, carbon
monoxide, formaldehgde and soot, caused primarilg by the incomplete combustion of natural gas
or LP fuels. Praperlg adjusted burners, indicated b_labluish rather than a gellow flame, will minimize
incomplete combustion. Exposure to these substances can be minimized b_lventing with an open
window or using a ventilation fan or hood.
SAFETYPRECAUTIONS
Have the installer show _lOUthe location of the range gas shuboff valve and how to shut it off if
necessary.
W_Have uour range installed and properlu

OVEN
Stand owog from the range when opening the door of ohot oven. The hot air and steam that escape
can cause burns to hands, face and eges.
W_Do not use the oven for a storage area.
Items stored in the oven can ignite. W,Do not use uour oven to dru newspapers.
If overheated, theu can catch fire.
?_Keep the oven free from grease buildup.
_ Place the oven shelves in the desired position
while the oven iscool.
_ Pulling out the shelf to the stopdock is a
convenience in lifting heavu foods. It is also
a precaution against burns from touching hot
surfaces of the door or oven walls. The lowest
position is not designed to slide.
_ Do not heat unopened food containers.
Pressure could build up and the container
could burst, causing an injuru.
i_ Never use aluminum foil to line the oven
bottom. Improper use of foil could start
a fire and result in high carbon monoxide.
WARNING: NEVERcover
any slots, holes or passages in the oven
bottom or cover an entire rack with
materials such as aluminum foil. Doing
so blocks air flow through the oven and
mau cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
Aluminum foil linings mau also trap
heat, causing a fire hazard.
?_Use only glass cookware that is recommended
for use in gas ovens.
?_Always remove any broiler pan from range
as soon as you finish broiling. Grease left in the
pan can catch fire if oven is used without
removing the grease from the broiler pan.
_ When broiling, if meat is too close to the flame,
the fat may ignite. Trim excess fat to prevent
excessive flare-ups.
_ Make sure any broiler pan is in place correctly

WARNING!
SURFACEBURNERS
Use proper pan size-avoid pans that are unstable or easilg tippe4 Select coot<ware having flat
bottoms large enough to cover burner grates. Toovoid spillovers, mare sure cookware is large enough
to contain the food properly. This will beth save deoning time and prevent hazardous accumulations of
food, since heavy spattering or spillovers left on range can ignite. Use pans with handles that can be
easily grasped and remain cool
_ Always use the LITE position (on electric
ignition models) or the HI position (on standing
pilot models)when igniting the top burners
and make sure the burners have ignited.
i_ Never leave the surface burners unattended at
high flame settings. Boilovers cause smoking
and greasy spillovers that may catch on fire.
_ Adjust the top burner flame size so it
does not extend beyond the edge of the
cookware. Excessive flame is hazardous.
_, Use only dry pot holders-moist or damp pot
holders on hot surfaces may result in burns
from steam. Do not let pot holders come near
open flames when lifting cookware. Do not use
a towel or other bulky cloth in place of a pot
holder.
_ When using glass cookware, make sure it
isdesigned for top-of-range cooking.
_ To minimize the possibility of burns, ignition
of flammable materials and spillage, turn
cookware handles toward the side or back
of the range without extending over adjacent
burners.
KsCarefully watch foods being fried at a high
flame setting.
_ Always heat fat slowly, and watch as it heats.
_ Do not leave any items on the cooktop. The
hot air from the vent may ignite flammable
items and will increase pressure in closed
containers, which may cause them to burst.
_, If a combination of oils or fats will be used in
frying, stir together before heating or as fats
melt slowly.
_ Use a deep fat thermometer whenever
possible to prevent overheating fat beyond
the smoking point.
_ Use the least possible amount of fat for
effective shallow or deep-fat frying. Filling the
pan too full of fat can cause spillovers when
food is added.
i!:_Do not flame foods on the cooktop. If you do
flame foods under the hood, turn the fan on.
!:,_iDo not use a wok on the cooking surface
if the wok has a round metal ring that is
placed over the burner grate to support
the wok. This ring acts as a heat trap, which
may damage the burner grate and burner
head. Also, it may cause the burner to work
improperly. This may cause a carbon
monoxide level above that allowed by current
standards, resulting in a health hazard.
_ Foods for frying should be as dry as possible.
Frost on frozen foods or moisture on fresh
foods can cause hot fat to bubble up and
over the sides of the pan.
¢_;4Never try to move a pan of hot fat, especially
a deep fat fryer. Wait until the fat is cool.
!_ Do not leave plastic items on the cooktop-
they may melt if left too close to the vent.
_ Keepall plasticsaway from the surface
burners.
_ To avoid the possibility of a burn, always be
certain that the controls for all burners are at
the OFF position and all grates are cool before
attempting to remove them.
_ If range is located near a window, do not hang
long curtains that could blow over the surface
burners and create a fire hazard.
i_}If you smell gas, turn off the gas to the range
and call a qualified service technician. Never
use an open flame to locate a leak.

_e,com
SURFACEBURNERS (cont.)

before removing cookware, sure pilots are lit (on standing pilot models),
turn off the gas to the range and call a
qualified service technician. Never use
an open flame to locate a leak.
_ Do not lift the cooktop on sealed burner
models. Lifting the cooktop can lead to
damage and improper operation of the range.
?£When a pilot goes out (on standing pilot
models), Uou will detect a faint odor of gas
as your signal to relight the pilot. When
relighting the pilot, make sure burner controls
are in the off position, and follow instructions
in this book to relight.
_ Do not place or store items that can melt
or catch fire on the grates, even when the

How to Select Flame Size
For safe handling of cookware, never let the
flames extend up the sides of the cookwore.
Watch the flame, not the knob, as gou reduce
heat. When fast heating isdesired, the flame
sizeon a gas burner should match the
cookware gou are using.
Flames larger than the bottom of the
cookware will not result in faster heating
of the cookware and could be hazardous.
Top-of-Range Cookware
Aluminum: Medium-weight cookware is
recommended because it heats quicklg
and evenlg.Mostfoods brown evenlg in an
aluminum skillet.Use saucepanswith tight-
fitting lidswhen cooking with minimum
amounts of water.
Cast-Iron: If heated slowlg, most skilletswill
give satisfactorg results.
Enamelware: Under some conditions, the
enamel of some eookware mag melt. Follow
cookware manufacturer's recommendations
for cooking methods.
Glass: Thereare two tgpes of glass
cookware-those for oven useonlg and those
for top-of-range cooking (saucepans,coffee
and teapots}.Glassconducts heat verg
slowlg.
HeatproofGlass Ceramic: Can be usedfor
either surface or oven cooking. It conducts
heat verg slowlg and cools verg slowlg.Check
cookware manufacturer's directions to be
sure itcan be used on gas ranges.
Stainless Steel: Thismetal alone has poor
heating properties and isusuallg combined
with copper, aluminum or other metals for
improved heat distribution. Combination
metal skilletsusuallgwork satisfactorilg if
theg are usedwith medium heat as the
manufacturer recommends.
Stove Top Grills (on modelswith sealedburners)
Do not use stove top grills on gour sealed gas
burners. If gou use the stove top grill on the
sealed gas burner, it will cause incomplete
combustion and can result in exposure to
carbon monoxide levels above allowable
This con be hazardous to your health.
standards.
Use a flat-bottomed wok
Wok This Wag (on modelswith sealedburners)
We recommend that you use a14" or smaller
flat-battomed wok. Make sure the wok bottom
sits flat on the grate. They are available at
your localretailstore.
Onlg a flat-bottomed wok should be used.
Do not usea flat-bottomed wok on a support
ring. Placingthe ring over the burner or grate
mag cause the burner to work improperlg,
resulting in carbon monoxide levelsabove
allowable standards. Thiscould be dangerous
to gour health.
In Case of Power Failure (electric ignition models)
In case of a power failure, gou can light
the gas surface burners on gour range with
a match. Holda lit match to the burner, then

A smaller sheet of foil mag be used to catch a
spillover bg placing iton a lower shelf several
inches below the food.
Oven Moisture
Asgour oven heats up,the temperature
change of the air in the oven mag cause
water droplets to form on the door glass.
Thesedroplets are harmlessand will

_{!For steaks and chops, slash fat evenlg
around the outside edges of the meat. To
slash, cut crosswise through the outer fat

Thetype of margarine will affect baking performance!
Host recipes for baking have been developed using high fat products such as butter or margarine (80% fat). If gou
decrease the fat, the recipe mag not give the some results as with ahigher fat product.
Recipe failure can result if cakes, pies, pastries, cookies or candies are made with low fat spreads. The lower the fat
content of aspread product, the more noticeable these differences become.
Federalstandards require products labeled "margarine" to contain at least 80% fat bg weight. Lowfat spreads,on the
other hand, contain lessfat and more water. Thehigh moisture content of these spreads affects the texture and flavor
of baked goods. Forbest resultswith gour old favorite recipes, usemargarine, butter or stick spreads containing at least
70% vegetable oil. 17
