Introduction
How to Operate
COMBO METER
pH-EC-TDS-TEMP
General Description
GI-98129 and GI-98130 are waterproof pH, EC/TDS and
temperaturemeters. Thehousinghasbeencompletelysealed
against humidity and designed to float. All pH and EC/TDS
readings are automatically temperature compensated (ATC),
and temperature values can be displayed in °C or °F units.
For EC/TDS readings, the EC/TDS conversion factor (CONV)
is selectable by the user, as well as the temperature
compensation coefficient ß (BETA). The meters can be
calibrated at one or two points for pH (with auto buffer
recognition and at one point for EC/TDS). Measurements are
highlyaccuratewithauniquestabilityindicator right ontheLCD.
A low battery symbol warns the user when the batteries are to
be replaced. In addition, the Battery Error Prevention System
(BEPS) avoids erroneous reading caused by low voltage level
by turning the meter off. The pH electrode supplied with the
meter is replaceable by the user. The stainless steel
encapsulated temperature sensor facilitates faster and more
accurate temperature measurement and compensation.

hold the O/MODE button for 2-3 seconds. Notice that every
time you turn the pen on, it will flash all icons used on the LCD
for a few seconds. This is immediately followed by the
percentage of remaining battery life – example: % 95 BATT).
After the battery life flashes the pen will settle into “normal
measurementmode”. Nowwouldbe a good time to get familiar
with the measurement options. This is located to the right of
the ATC icon and above the “primary display”. Press the Set/
Holdbuttonrepeatedlyandthemeasurementoptionswillscroll

B. To turn your meter “off”: Make sure the pen is normal
measurementmode, then press and holdO/MODEbutton. The
LCDwillread“OFF”. Immediately release the O/MODE button,
your meter will now be off.
C. Freezing the display: press the set/hold button for 2-3
seconds until the secondary display reads “HOLD”. Pressing
either button will return you to normal measurement mode.
NOTE: Before taking a measurement, follow the calibration
instructions to ensure accurate readings. For accuracy it is
recommended to carry out a two point calibration. For best
results always use Genesis Instrument buffers and calibration
solutions. If measurements are taken in different samples
successively, rinse the electrodethoroughlytoeliminatecross-
contaminationandafter cleaning, rinse the electrode with some
of the sample to be measured. When not in use, rinse the
electrodewith water andstoreina few dropsofstorage solution.
Donotuse distilled water. If electrode dries out soak in storage
solution for one hour. Clean monthly in cleaning solution.

Conductivity Calibration
A. There are many ways to calibrate these meters for
conductivity depending on the options selected, the following
areGreenAir Products recommendations forcalibrationtoread
nutrientsolutionstrengthsforhydroponics.Followingthesewill
ensure accuracy in a user-friendly manner.
B. Since all TDS (ppm/ppt) readings are based on EC (uS,
mS)werecommendcalibratingby using EC (uS, mS). Wealso
recommend setting the EC/TDS conversion factor (CONV) to
0.70. To change conversion factor: turn the meter on, select
either ppm or uS (ppt or mS for the GI-98130) measurement
option. Now press and hold the O/Mode button until the
secondarydisplayreads TEMP. PresstheO/Modebuttononce
moreto show current conversion factor. Example: 0.50 CONV.
Use the Set/Hold button to change conversion factors to 0.70.
To continue you must press the O/Mode button again. This will
take you to a setting mode called BETA, make sure your BETA
value is and remains on 1.9. Note: BETA is a temperature
compensation coefficient used mainly in certain laboratory
situationsand notneededfor hydroponics.Ifyou needtochange
this setting, use the Set/Hold button while in BETA mode.
Pressing the O/Mode button one more time will return you to
normal measuring mode.
C. To calibrate conductivity: with the meter on, select the uS
(mS for the GI-98130) measurement option, then press and
hold the O/Mode button until the LCD reads CAL, immediately
letgo of the button when you see “CAL”. The meter will prompt
you to use 1413uS (or 12.88mS) buffer solution. Immerse the
probe into the solution. Notice the CAL icon in the lower left
corner is flashing to denote that the meter is trying to calibrate.
Oncethe calibrationhasbeenautomatically performed,theLCD
willflashOKfor1 sec. before returning to normal measurement
mode (keep close watch for the OK or you might miss it). You
are now free to measure conductivity in either uS or ppm (mS
or ppt on GI-09129). Note: the CAL icon in lower left corner of
LCD now remains solid, signifying calibration is completed.
Calibrating pH
A. Make sure that the meter is powered on and is in the pH
measurementoption. Now press and hold the O/MODE button
until “CAL” appears on the secondary display. Immediately
release the button when you see the “CAL” icon. The LCD will
now read 7.01 in the primary display and USE under in the
secondary display. Notice the CAL icon will be flashing in the
lower left corner of the LCD. Fully submerge the electrode
(located at the bottom of the pen) in Genesis pH 7.01 buffer
solution. The meter will automatically recognize the buffer and
calibratetoit. After recognition of the 7.01 the meterwillprompt
you to use 4.01. At this time you may opt out and use a single
point calibration of 7.01 or continue to perform a two-point
calibration.Tooptoutanduseasinglepointcalibrationof7.01,
simply press the O/Mode button.
B. To proceed with a two point calibration. Rinse the
electrode with pure water to avoid cross-contamination. Then
submerge electrode into pH 4.01 buffer solution. After
recognition of the 4.01, OK will flash for 1 second on the LCD,
(watchtheLCDclosely or you may miss the OK) then the meter
willreturnto normal measurement mode. At this time, youmay
notice that the CAL icon (bottom left of LCD) that was flashing
now remains. This denotes that the calibration process has
been completed. NOTE: for hydroponics and growing
applications, we recommend pH 7.01. For people who have
need for NIST 6.86 buffer follow instructions as follows:
With meter on and in pH measurement option press and hold
the O/Mode button again to show current buffer set which will
be pH 7.01, to switch to pH 6.86 use the Set/Hold button to
toggle between the two. Press the O/Mode button to return to
normal measurement mode.
Taking Measurements & Changing Temperature Units
A. To take a Measurement: While the meter is on, select
desiredmeasurementoption(pH, uS, ppm for GI-98129 or pH,
mS, ppt for GI-98130). Submerge the electrode directly into
the solution or sample to be tested while stirring gently. For
sample testing use plastic, paper, or styrofoam to hold the
solution to avoid electromagnetic interference. Measurement
is complete when the stability indicator disappears. The
measurementsareautomaticallytemperature compensated by
ATC software within the meter.
B. To Select °C or °F to Read Temperature: With meter on
andinanymeasurement option, press and hold O/Mode button
until LCD reads TEMP then release button. Now use the Set/
Hold button to toggle between °C and °F To return to normal
measurement mode, press the O/Mode button twice.
Battery Replacement: The meter displays the remaining
battery percentage every time it is switched on. When the
battery level is below5%, the battery symbol on the bottomleft
of the LCD lights up to indicate a low battery condition. The
batteriesmustbeimmediatelyreplaced. Ifhoweverthebattery
levelisso low as to cause erroneous reading, the Battery Error
Prevention System (BEPS) will automatically turn the meter
