The indicato eceives its ope ating powe f om the ai c aft 28-volt dc bus. Inputs to the
indicato f om the inte face unit include the ed, g een and blue video, which a e TTL inputs
used to d ive the CRT colo guns; and the X- et ace and Y- et ace signals, which a e also
TTL signals, used to t igge the ho izontal and ve tical sweep ci cuits that develop the sweep
signals fo the CRT deflection yolks. The IND ON (indicato on) input f om the cont ol unit
and +5-volt input f om the inte face unit a e used in the indicato on/off ci cuit. The enable
d ive connection is a g ound which p ovides and inte lock that enables the output d ive s at
the inte face unit. Othe inputs a e CCIR FLIR (fo wa d-looking inf a ed) o RS-170
composite video, a composite video enable (COMP VIDEO EN) disc ete input and a
CCIR/RS170 select input.
The indicato contains seve al ci cuit boa ds inte connected by cables. Figu e 1-1 is a
simplified block diag am showing the elationship between the boa ds and the
inte connecting cabling.
A. Display of Inte face Unit Inputs
(1) Scanning Technique
The colo indicato is scanned the same way as a television sc een. Scanning sta ts
in the uppe left co ne of the sc een and p oceeds ac oss to the ight and slightly
downwa d. When the ight hand side is eached, the scanning spot et aces apidly to
a position below the sta ting position and again p oceeds to the ight and slightly
downwa d, etc., ultimately eaching the bottom of the display. At that point, the spot
etu ns to the top and epeats the p ocess, except that the lines of the second
scanning field fall between the lines of the fi st field. Thus, successive fields a e
inte laced, pe mitting two fields fo each f ame, which g eatly educes the tendency to
flicke . (See Figu e 1-2.)
The eceived ada video info mation f om the antenna is in the conventional ho-theta
fo mat. The inte face unit conve ts this video to the X-Y fo mat fo displaying on the
indicato fo displaying on the indicato CRT. The X-Y scanning technique pe mits
displaying othe data (alphanume ics, etc.) in a eas whe e ada video is not being
displayed and supe imposing data (beacon, NAV) ove the ada video. (Fo detailed
info mation on the indicato displays, efe to Pa t 1 of the RDR-1500B System
Manual (IB21500B), Volume One TM109302 (006-15589-0000).
All the data fo the complex display is sto ed in memo ies at the inte face unit and
displayed at the p ope time when the memo ies a e add essed as the CRT is
scanned.
(2) Sc een Fo mat (See Figu e 1-2.)
Using inte laced scanning, two fields constitute one f ame. Du ing each field, the
sc een is scanned in 256 ho izontal lines, fo a total of 512 diffe ent lines pe f ame.
On each line, 512 bits of info mation a e displayed, fo a total of 262,144 locations
(512 x 512) within the 4.5 x 3.5 inch viewing a ea of the CRT at which info mation may
be displayed.

Each bit on a line is located by a value of “X”. Each line of the sc een is located by a
value of “Y”. Each location on the sc een has a co esponding location in memo y at
the inte face unit. The “X” and “Y” values of the two locations on the sc een can thus
be used to add ess the memo y to w ite the info mation into the p ope locations in
memo y fo tempo a y sto age, and then to ead out and display the info mation
sto ed the e when the p ope time in the scan occu s.
As the sc een is scanned, the memo y is add essed at each point on each line. The
data sto ed in the memo y at each add ess is supplied to video amplifie ci cuits at the
indicato to tu n on the app op iate colo gun(s) in the CRT.
The ed, g een and blue video data f om the inte face unit a e clocked out of memo y
at 10 MHz. Thus, the ho izontal scan time fo each line is about 51.2 mic oseconds
(512 x 1/10 MHz).
The document reference is online, please check the correspondence between the online documentation and the printed version.

At the end of each line, an X- et ace inte val, which is about 12.8 mic oseconds. Total
time fo each line, including X- et ace, is the efo e about 64 mic oseconds.
The ve tical scan time fo each field is about 16.38 milliseconds (256 x 64
mic oseconds). At the end of each field, a Y- et ace pulse is gene ated by the
inte face unit. Howeve , because the two fields of each f ame sta t at diffe ent lines,
the ve tical sweep cont olling the ve tical scan must be sta ted at diffe ent times to
allow the beam to begin the ho izontal sweep fo the inte laced lines halfway between
the lines fo the p evious field.
As shown in Figu e 1-2, the ho izontal lines a e numbe ed f om ze o to 511, sta ting
at the bottom of the sc een. The fi st field (field #0) begins scanning ho izontally at
line 510 and p oceeds to scan eve y othe line (508, 506, . . . 4, 2, 0). When the
ho izontal scan of line 0 is complete, the inte face unit stops sending video and
t ansmits a Y- et ace signal which etu ns the elect on beam to the top of the sc een.
At the completion of field #0, the Y- et ace inte val is equal to 15 X-line inte vals, o
about 960 mic oseconds (64 mic oseconds x 15).
The ve tical sweep must be sta ted befo e video is available and fo the next scan it is
initiated by the leading edge of the next X- et ace pulse. This places the sta t of field
#1 at line 511, and the odd numbe ed lines (511, 509, . . . 3, 1) a e now scanned
ho izontally and the scan is te minated by the next Y- et ace pulse.
To place the elect on beam at the p ope location (line 510) fo the sta t of video fo
filed #0, the inte face unit initiates the ve tical sweep ea ly. This is accomplished by
te minating the Y- et ace pulse 32 mic oseconds, o one-half ho izontal line, befo e
the sta t of the fi st ho izontal line fo the field. This esults in a Y- et ace time equal to
only 14-1/2 X-line inte vals instead of the 15 used fo the p evious Y- et ace. Video
f om the inte face unit begins when the elect on beam eaches the beginning of line
510 and the cycle is epeated.
Total time fo one f ame (two fields plus two Y- et aces) is app oximately 34
milliseconds [64 x (256 + 15 + 256 + 14.5) mic oseconds]. This gives a ef esh ate of
nea ly 30 f ames and 60 fields pe second.
(3) Alphanume ic Fo mat
The inte face unit gene ates the alphanume ic cha acte display f om dot-mat ix data
sto ed in memo y. Each cha acte is fo med acco ding to a fixed fo mat, 16 bits wide
and 32 lines high, including spacing between cha acte s.
Since each line has 512 pixels (individually add essed pictu e elements), the
maximum numbe of cha acte s pe line is 32. Since each cha acte equi es 32 lines
and each f ame has 512 lines, 16 ows of cha acte s can be p ovided.
Cha acte s can be shifted ho izontally up to 15 pixels. This featu e is useful, fo
example, in shifting the nume ic heading call outs at the top of the sc een left o ight
as the ai c aft heading changes.

A sepa ate alphanume ic set is used fo gene ating cha acte s f om an optional
checklist unit (CC-2024B, C o D). Checklist data is displayed as 32 cha acte s pe
line, but using only 12 cha acte lines on the sc een, fo a total of 384 cha acte s. Fou
lines a e left blank.
B. Display of Composite Video
The IN-1502H Rada Indicato is capable of displaying “TV” signals f om an ai c aft
sou ce instead of the ada /ove lay data f om the inte face unit. The indicato can display
625-line, 50 Hz CCIR (Inte national Radio Consultive Committee, Inte national
Telecommunications Union) o 525-line, 60 Hz RS-170 composite video signal inputs.
Selection between display of inte face unit inputs and composite video data is
accomplished via the COMP VIDEO EN pin on the ea connecto (see T ab le 1-1). When
this pin is g ounded, the unit will display eithe CCIR o RS-170 video info mation f om the
ai c aft. When the pin is not g ounded, the indicato will display ada /ove lay info mation
as dete mined by the settings of the switches on the ada cont ol unit.
A second pin on the ea connecto (CCIR/RS170) allows selection between CCIR and
RS-170 inputs when the COMP VIDEO EN pin is g ounded. When CCIR/ RS170 is
g ounded, RS-170 data will be displayed. When this pin is not g ounded, CCIR data will
be displayed.
(1) CCIR Video Signal Fo mat
The CCIR video signal consists of a pictu e signal that cont ols the light output of the
eceive pictu e tube and a synch onizing signal fo locking the line and field sweep
ci cuits at the indicato so that the pictu e is econstituted co ectly. The CCIR video
signal is the standa d PAL (phase alte nating line) 635-line, 50-field, inte laced TV
signal used th oughout Eu ope. It is shown in Figu e 1-3.
The fi st 30% of amplitude is allocated to sync signals and the emainde (30% is
black and 100% is peak white) to luminance.
