Thank you for opting for a Grünbeck product. Backed by decades of

Drinking water (raw water) is classified as food and requires particular
care. Therefore, always ensure the required hygiene in operating and
maintaining systems involved in the drinking water supply. This also
applies to the treatment of water for industrial use if repercussions for
the drinking water (raw water) cannot completely be excluded.
All Grünbeck systems and devices are made of high-quality materials.
This ensures reliable operation over many years, provided you treat
your water treatment system with the required care. This operation
manual assists you with important information. Therefore, please read
the entire operation manual before installing, operating or maintaining
the system.

This operation manual is intended for the owners/users of our sys-
tems. It is divided into several chapters, which are listed in the “Table
of contents” on page 2 in alphabetical order. In order to find the spe-
cific information you are looking for, check for the corresponding
chapter on page 2.
3 | General safety information
3.1 Symbols and notes
Important information in this operation manual is characterised by
symbols. Please pay particular attention to this information to ensure
the hazard-free, safe and efficient handling of the system.

3.2 Operating
personnel Only persons who have read and understood this operation manual
are permitted to work on and with the system. The safety guidelines
in particular are to be strictly adhered to.
3.3 Intended use
The system may only be used for the purpose outlined in the product
description (chapter C). The guidelines in this operation manual as
well as the applicable local guidelines concerning the drinking water
protection, accident prevention and occupational safety must be ad-
hered to.
In addition, intended use also implies that the system may only be op-
erated when it is in proper working order. Any malfunctions must be
repaired at once.
3.4 Protection from water damage
Warning! In order to properly protect the installation site from water
damage:
1. a sufficient floor drain system must be available or
2. a water stop device (see chapter C “Optional accessories”) must
be installed.
Warning! Floor drains that discharge to a lifting system do not work in
case of a power failure.
3.5 Indication of
specific dangers
Danger due to electrical energy! Do not touch electrical parts with wet
hands! Disconnect the system from mains before starting work on
electrical parts of the system. Have qualified experts replace dam-
aged cables immediately.
Danger due to mechanical energy! System parts may be subject to
overpressure. Danger of injury and damage to property due to escap-
ing water and unexpected movement of system parts. →Check pres-
sure pipes regularly. Depressurise the system before starting repair
or maintenance work on the system.
Hazardous to health due to contaminated drinking water! →The sys-
tem may only be installed by a specialist company. Strictly adhere to
the operation manual! Ensure that there is sufficient flow. Adhere to
the pertinent guidelines when starting up the system after extended
periods of standstill. Perform inspections and maintenance at the in-
tervals specified!

Note: By concluding a maintenance contract, you ensure that all of
the required tasks are performed on time. You may perform the in-
terim inspections yourself.

Caution! The system may be damaged by frost or high temperatures.
In order to prevent damage of this kind:
Protect from frost during shipping and storage! Do not install or store
system next to objects which radiate a lot of heat.
5 | Disposal
Comply with the applicable national regulations.
5.1 Packaging
Dispose of the packaging in an environmentally friendly manner.
5.2 Product
If this symbol (crossed out waste bin) is on the product, this product is
subject to the European Directive 2012/19/EU. This means that this
product or the electrical and electronic components must not be dis-
posed with household waste.
Find out about the local regulations on the separate collection of elec-
trical and electronic products. Make use of the collection points availa-
ble to you for the disposal of your product.

For information on collection points for your product, contact your mu-
nicipality, the public waste management authority, an authorised body
for the disposal of electrical and electronic products or your waste dis-

B Basic information
1 | Laws, regulations, standards
In the interest of good health, rules cannot be ignored when it comes
to the processing of drinking water. This operation manual takes into
consideration the current regulations and stipulates information that
you will need for the safe operation of your water treatment system.
Among other things, the regulations stipulate that
•only approved companies are permitted to make major modifications
to water supply facilities
•and that checks, inspections and maintenance on installed devices
are to be performed at regular intervals.
Warning! Risk of infection due to germs in the drinking water. In stag-
nant water, germs may reproduce to a point where they pose a threat.
Pay particular attention to hygiene when working on nitrate filters. En-
sure that there is sufficient flow. Disinfect the systems if required.
2 | Nitrate, nitrate reduction
The nitrate content can vary considerably depending on the origin of
the water. The reduction of the nitrate content may be necessary for
the health of humans and animals or for chemical/technical reasons.
The intended use and the respective requirements therefore are the
determining factors for the admissible nitrate content.
Nitrate filters are used in particular to further reduce the nitrate con-
tent in the drinking water, for instance, or - in case of private water
supply - to reduce the nitrate content below the limit value (max. 50
mg/l) stipulated in the German Drinking Water Ordinance. According
to the WHO, a maximum nitrate content of 25 mg/l should be aspired.
A water analysis of the raw water and its competent evaluation by an
expert is an indispensable prerequisite for the design of a nitrate filter.
Whether additional measures - apart from the reduction of nitrate -
are required depends on the raw water and the intended use of the
treated water.

The exchange of nitrate ions for chloride ions results in the reduction of
the nitrates contained in the water.
Principle
The raw water flows through an exchanger. This exchanger tank is filled
with a resin, to which sodium ions are bonded (see fig. B-1).
Since the bonding positions at the resin prefer nitrate ions to chloride
ions, these ions are retained while the resin discharges chloride ions
into the water (exchange reaction). This way, the nitrate remains in the
exchanger. Water loaded with chloride ions leaves the exchanger (fig.
B-2). This process continues until the chloride ions are used up.

The exchange reaction can be reversed if a large amount of chloride
ions (salt solution = brine) is added (fig. B-3). By their sheer number, the
chloride ions displace the nitrate ions at the docking positions of the
resin.
This process restores the initial state. The resin is regenerated and is
again ready for nitrate reduction.
Drinking water (raw water)
According to the German Drinking Water Ordinance, the limit value for
chloride ions (250 mg/l) must not be exceeded. This is achieved by add-
ing untreated drinking water (raw water), a process which is commonly
called blending.

The type plate is located at the operating panel of the system. In or-
der to speed up the processing of your inquiries or orders, please
specify the data shown on the type plate of your system when con-
tacting Grünbeck. Please copy the indicated information to the table
below in order to have it handy whenever necessary.

2 | Technical specifications
The nitrate filters WINNI-mat VGX-N are single system with built-in
bypass (bypass pipe in the connection block) for the continuous sup-
ply of raw water during the regeneration. They are equipped with a
central control valve and are volume-controlled. The regeneration is
released when the pre-set water volume has been consumed. If the
water volume between two regenerations is not consumed within 2
days after the last regeneration, the system initiates a forced regener-
ation. The system regenerates using raw water.
All system data is summarised in table C-1. The data given refers to
standard nitrate filters. Possible deviations in case of special versions
are communicated separately, if applicable.
Warning! Extended periods of standstill may cause bacterial growth
in the drinking water (raw water). The automatic regeneration counter-
acts this effect. Therefore, do not disconnect the system from the wa-
ter and power supply when you are absent for longer periods of time.
Caution! Electrically operated valves. In the event of a power failure
during the regeneration, water may flow into the drain or the brine
tank. In case of a power failure, check the system and shut off the wa-
ter supply, if necessary.

The indicated values change at different primary
pressures and only serve as a means for a rough
determination.
* The waste water volume and salt consumption
refer to a primary pressure of 3 bar.
** The indicated exchanger capacity is a maximum
value. Operating and water conditions may
have an impact on this capacity. If the ratio
SO4/NO3(indicated in mval/l) is higher than 2.7,
the usable capacity decreases accordingly.
When designing the system, the highest
nitrate content that may occur must be

3 | Intended use
Nitrate filters of the WINNI-mat VGX-N series are designed for the re-
duction of nitrates in cold drinking and industrial water.
These nitrate filters can be used to further reduce the nitrate content
in the drinking water or - in case of private water supply - to reduce
the nitrate content below the limit value stipulated in the German
Drinking Water Ordinance.

Note: The nitrate filter WINNI-mat VGX-N is not suitable to completely
remove all nitrates, however.
In case of single systems, only raw water is available during the re-
generation phase.

Note: In case of unfavourable flow conditions / installation situations,
the water supply by means of the bypass may result in flow noises.
The nitrate filters WINNI-mat VGX-N may only be sold after consulta-
tion by Grünbeck. A water analysis is required. The raw water has to
be free of iron and manganese (less than 0.2 mg of iron or 0.05 mg of
manganese per litre). Sulphate contained in the raw water reduces
the usable capacity of the system. A high sulphate content may dis-
turb the system’s function. The nitrate content in the raw water must
not exceed max. 150 mg/l.
In case of a reduction of nitrates in the drinking water (raw water), the
stipulations of the German Drinking Water Ordinance - max. 250 mg/l
chloride - must be respected. Where applicable, the admixture of raw
water must be taken into consideration. A nitrate reduction by 1 mg/l
increases the chloride content by 0.57 mg/l.
The system is adjusted to the water demand expected during installa-
tion and is not suited for a highly deviating performance.
4 | Application limits
The application limits are defined by the “Intended use” (see item 3)
and the “Technical specifications” (table C-1).
The system may only be operated if all components are installed
properly. Safety equipment must NEVER be removed, bridged or oth-
erwise tampered with.
Designated application also implies that the information contained in
this operation manual and all safety guidelines applying at the instal-
lation site be observed. Furthermore, the maintenance and inspection
intervals must be respected.

4.1 Functional
description
Via the connection block installed in the pipe and a connection hose,
the raw water flows into the raw water inlet and then continues to the
ion exchanger in operation and flows from top to bottom through the
resin contained in the tank which is loaded with chlorine ions. In the
process, the nitrate ions contained in the water are replaced by chlo-
rine ions (the so-called ion exchanger principle). The water then flows
through the lower filter nozzle and the riser pipe to the water outlet.
An integrated pulser registers the water volume in the water outlet.
Then, the water flows back to the connection block via a second con-
nection hose. In the connection block, raw water can be added via the
integrated blending valve. Afterwards, the water with reduced nitrate
content is directed to the pipe network again.

The installation site must provide adequate space. A foundation of a
sufficient size and adequate load carrying capacity has to be pro-
vided. The required connections must be provided prior to the installa-
tion of the system. For dimensions and connection data, please refer

with the optional accessories (see chapter C, 5.2) for your system (if

1.1 Water connection
When installing the nitrate filters WINNI-mat VGX-N, certain binding
rules must be observed. Additional recommendations are given in or-
der to facilitate the handling of the system. The installation instruc-
tions described below are also illustrated in fig. D-1.
Binding rules
The installation of a nitrate filter system represents a major interfer-
ence with the drinking water system and therefore may only be per-
formed by approved experts. In Germany, the installation company
must be registered in an installation directory of a water company as
per §12(2) AVBWasserV (German Ordinance on General Conditions
for the Supply of Water).
•Observe local installation guidelines and general regulations.
•Install a drinking water filter (e.g. pureliQ:KD) upstream.
•Secure the nitrate filter WINNI-mat according to DIN EN 1717
(e.g. system separator GENO-DK 2).
•Use corrosion-resistant material for the water pipe
OR
dose a corrosion inhibitor downstream of the nitrate filter.

Note: The reduction of nitrate has an impact on the corrosion behav-
iour of copper pipes, galvanised steel pipes and pipes made of rust-
proof steel. Dosing prevents this effect.
•Provide a drain connection (minimum DN 50) to discharge the re-
generation water.
•The installation room must have a floor drain. If this is not the case,
an appropriate water stop device must be installed (see chapter C,
item 5.2).

Note: If the regeneration water is directed to a lifting system, said
system must be salt water resistant (see chapter C, item 5.2).
Warning! Floor drains that discharge to a lifting system do not work
in case of a power failure.
Recommendations
•
Provide a sampling valve immediately downstream of the nitrate fil-
ter. This simplifies the sampling for the regular functional check.

1.2 Electrical
installation
A shock-proof plug is adequate for the electrical connection. How-
ever, it must comply with the specifications given in table C-1, may
not be further away from the system than 1.20 m and must carry con-
stant voltage (do not couple with light switch)!
Caution! The socket must carry constant voltage (do not couple with
light or heating emergency switch).

3 | How to connect the system
1. Install the connection block in the pipe (observe direction of flow).
2. Install the connection hoses (observe direction of flow).
Warning! Risk of bacterial growth due to stagnation! According to
VDI 6023, filling the system with drinking water prior to starting the
designated operation is prohibited.
Therefore, only connect the nitrate filter to the drinking water supply
immediately prior to start-up.

Note: The connection for raw/treated water (fig. D-1, items 7 and 8)
is located on the reverse side of the nitrate filter and features the cor-
responding arrows indicating direction. These arrows must corre-
spond to those of the connection block.
Caution! A non-return valve is installed on the inlet side of the con-
nection block (fig. D-1, item 1). Therefore, the overpressure safety
valves must be installed downstream.
3. Establish a waste water connection as per DIN EN 1717. Shorten
the flushing water hose to the length required and direct it to the
drain.
Make sure that there is a free outlet (min. 20 mm) to the drain.
Secure the hose with suitable means to prevent the hose from
moving about (exiting regeneration water is pressurised).
Caution! Risk of damage and malfunctions due to waste water back-
ing up. Therefore, do not bend the hose and do not lead it higher
than the system height.
4. Shorten the overflow hose of the brine tank to the length required,
direct it to the drain with a gradient and fasten it as per DIN 1717
(air buffer > 20 mm).

E Start-up
The work described below may only be performed by Grünbeck’s
technical service/authorised service company or by persons explicitly
authorised by Grünbeck.
1 | How to fill the brine tank
Fill the brine tank with 9 litres of water in case of VGX-N 50 and with
20 litres of water in case of VGX-N 400 and VGX-N 650 and fill in salt
tablets as per EN 973 type A afterwards. Completely fill with salt tab-
lets.
Caution! Impurities in the salt may cause malfunctions at the brine
valve and at the injector of the control valve. A defined salt quality is
required for the reliable function of the system.
Only use salt tablets as per DIN EN 973 type A.

Note: At the front of the brine tank, a mark indicates the minimum salt
filling level in the brine tank.
2 | How to start up the system
1. Open the raw water shut-off valve as well as the shut-off for
treated water at the connection block (see fig. E-1, items 1 and 2).
2. Check for leakages (also at the connection block).
3. Establish electrical connection (plug in mains cable).
4. How to set the control unit:
The nitrate filter WINNI-mat VGX-N is microprocessor-controlled.
The operating parameters are already stored in the control unit.
During start-up, all parameters must be entered which are re-
quired for the automatic calculation of the regeneration interval.

Note: For detailed information on the handling of the control unit, re-
fer to chapter F.
5. Set the time.
6. Set the nitrate content of the raw water (value as per water analy-
sis) (indication in the control electronics = °dH ≙mg/l nitrate)
7. Release a manual regeneration (see chapter F, item 2.4).
8. Check the nitrate filter for proper function.
