The headend station STC 316
This headend station is a modular system for the reception and conversion of
analog satellite broadcasts (radio and TV), digital satellite broadcasts (radio and
DVB TV = Digital Video Broadcasting), terrestrial radio and TV broadcasts, as
well as for the injection of audio and video signals from external audio/video
sources (e.g. video cameras, video recorders, DVD players).
It is appropriate for the installation of medium-sized to large common aerial
systems.
Users connected to the system can receive independently of each other all analog
and digital satellite broadcasts from the satellite selected.
Depending on the cassette type used, the received satellite signals are converted
into an FM or a standard TV channel.
The headend station can also convert digital satellite signals into QAM or PAL
output signals.
As the system is built-up with plug-in modules, it is possible to equip it with up
to 8 cassettes. Depending on the equipment variant, up to 24 programmes
from external audio/video sources, or 16 TV, or 32 radio broadcasts can be
converted.
The cassettes comprise satellite tuners, demodulators, audio and video proces-
sors, as well as modulators suitable for adjacent channel processing.
When the headend station is connected to the mains power supply, the eight
cassettes are supplied with the required operating voltages by means of the
switched-mode power supply unit via the plug-in connectors on the contact bar.
The user is guided by the two-line display on the control unit.

Installation
Heat build-up will shorten the life of all electrical appliances and is a source of
danger.
For this reason it is absolutely necessaryto observe all aeration criteria when
installing the headend station.
Important!
It is absolutely necessary to make sure that the ambient and
operating temperatures do neither fall below nor exceed the
admissible range (-10°C to +50°C) specified by the manufac-
turer.
Heat develops inside the housing of the headend station which must be able to
escape.
Therefore never cover the ventilation slots in the housing.
Do not place several headend stations on top of each other.
Operate the headend stations only in vertical position.
If several headend stations areinstalled side by side, minimum distances of at
least 30 cm must be kept at the sides.
Never expose the headend station to any moisture.
The headend station has been designed for being operated in a dry room.
Always make sure that the station is not exposed to dripping or splashing water.
– Recommended place of installation: indoors!
Fixation to a wall
The headend station can either be placed on a flat surface or be fixed to a wall
by means of the installation material supplied.
Installation material:
2 plastic pegs
2 hexagon-headed screws
The figure shows the rear side of the headend station with the 2 fixing rails, as
well as the measures necessary for a professional fixation to the wall.
1Drill the holes, insert the plastic pegs, screw in the hexagon-headed screws
then hook in the headend station.
Attention:
It is absolutely necessary to make sure that the fixation is able to carry the
weight (about 25 kg) of the headend station.

INSTALLATION, AERATION _____________________________
Installation into rack systems
Important:
Before installing the headend station into a rack, the two fixation rails on the
back of the station must be removed.
1Remove the power supply/control unit and the hybrid amplifier from the
headend station.
Undo the two fixing screws Son the base plate then tilt the base plate to the
front of the station.
2Straighten the four straps of the fixation rails then remove the rails.
3The two holes Aserve for the fixation to the rails of the rack.
Fix the headend station to the rails then refit the removed components.
Aeration
Important!
When installing the headend station into a rack system, it is
absolutely necessary to make sure that the ambient and
operating temperatures do neither fall below nor exceed the
admissible range (-10°C to +50°C) specified by the manufac-
turer.
The headcend station must be installed as close as possible to the bottom of the
rack.
A circular aeration, for example by means of a ventilator, is to be ensured.
In addition it is necessary to permanently control by means of thermo elements
the ambient and operating temperature of max. 50°C specified by the manu-
facturer.
If the ambient and operating temperature inside the rack system surpasses 50°C
max., the thermoswitch of the rack system must automatically disconnect the rack
system from the power supply.
Note:
As circuit-breaker at temperatures above 50°C in rack systems we recom-
mend, for example, the safety temperature limiter with reclose inhibition ATHf-
70 of Jumo.
This can be obtained from the RS-Components company under:
– Tel ++49 (0) 6105/401 234
– Order number 357-7935
Always make sure that the headend station is not exposed to dripping or
splashing water.

Connection
Caution:
Before inserting new or replacing existing cassettes, it is absolutely necessary
to disconnect the power supply plug!
When installing the headend station pay attention to the correct earth connec-
tion according to the valid VDE regulations 0855 before putting the station
into operation.
1Disengage the input splitter then tilt it upwards or remove it.
2Remove the screws from the holding frame, insert the cassettes into the free
plug-in locations (e.g. from left to right) and then fix them with the screws.
Note:
Three spare screws are inserted in the holding frame.
Mains connection
1Connect the headend station to a mains voltage of 220...240 V~, 50/60 Hz.
Note:
The headend station can only be switched off by pulling the power supply
plug.
Before changing a cassette, the power supply/control unit or the hybrid
amplifier, first disconnect the power supply plug from the wall outlet then pull
the other end of the power supply cable (located on the base plate of the
headend station) out of the power supply unit (see Fig.).

Functional description of the headend station
After connecting the headend station to the mains voltage, all cassettes (max. 8)
are supplied with the required operating voltages by a switched-mode power
supply unit via the plug-in connectors on the contact rail.
The passive input splitter provides highest flexibility when selecting signals with
horizontal or vertical polarization.
The SAT cassettes are connected to the INPUT A and INPUT B of the input splitter.
The INPUT A and INPUT B can be operated from a remote voltage supply, that
is, the LNC can be supplied with an operating voltage of +18 V/max.1 A ј.
All output signals of the cassettes are added up in the output collector then passed
on to the hybrid amplifier.
The hybrid amplifier delivers an output level of max. 106 dBµV.
The necessary operating voltage of +24 V јis supplied by the switched-mode
power supply unit.
The output levels of the individual cassettes must be exactly adjusted to each other
by means of the 8 level controls located on the front panel of the headend station.
An additional monitor output (approximately -20 dB) enables the connection of a
measuring TV receiver for service or monitoring purposes.
Predetermined break-outs B(see Fig.) for additional aerial inputs and the con-
nection of external devices (e.g a descrambler via a EURO-AV cable) facilitate
retrofitting.
Using the keys on the control unit you may select, change and save all input and
output parameters of the individual cassettes.
The user is guided by the 2-line display.
The software version of the headend station’s control unit can be indicated on the
diplay in the following way:
Press two keys, e.g., »+« and »–« on the control unit at the same time and hold
them down until the following occurs:
– The display turns dark and after about 5 seconds appears the software iden-
tification with the last two digits indicating the software version.
The sockets »SERVICE« (only for production purposes) and »RS 232« are serial
interfaces provided for PC-aided programming and downloading of updated soft-
ware for the control unit of the headend station.
It is also possible to operate the headend station with less than 8 twin or single
cassettes, and to link several headend stations with each other.
