Installation and Safety Precautions

Make absolutely sure that your receiver is not exposed to drip-
ping or splashing water. Protect the receiver from moisture.
In addition, ensure that the ventilation openings are never
obstructed. Do not place your receiver near sources of heat.
Heat build-up in the reciever is a source of danger and redu-
ces the receiver´s operating life.
When operating in a wall unit (or in a camper, for example),
maintain distances of at least 10 cm – see illustration.
When not using your receiver for longer periods of time, even
at night, switch it off with the power button.
You will save energy.
Even when switched off, the unit may be damamged by light-
ning striking the mains and/or aerial lead.
During a thunderstorm, you should always disconnect the
mains and aerial plugs.
Attention !
Exhausted batteries from the remote control do not belong in
the household rubbish. Exhausted batteries must be taken to
a special waste collecting point. This operating manual is
printed on chlorine-free paper which helps protect the
environment.

Important operating functions and basic settings can be car-
ried out with the rc sat remote control.
Please insert the battery included observing correct polarity.
The marking for this is on the compartment bottom. Close
the cover.
If a battery is exhausted, "bAAtt" appears briefly in the receiver
display.
Change the exhausted battery in time. We cannot be held
reponsible for damages resulting from an exhausted battery.

Note Except for buttons ɼɼßT, ɦɦßUand Radio ´?, all buttons are locked in order to prevent unintentio-
nal activation. Clear a blocked button by keeping it depressed (longer than 3 seconds). Button
block is reactivated when you switch the receiver off with the POWER ßQ button or to stand-by
with the remote control.

General
Congratulations for selecting your new STR 312 stereo satel-
lite receiver. Please read the operating instructions first. We
assume from the description of the functions that the aerial
has benn properly installed and that the receiver has been
correctly connected.
Connecting the SAT receiver to the
television set
You will obtain the best picture quality by connecting the
receiver and the TV set with a EURO-AV cable (see connec-
tion examples) If you have a TV set without a EURO-AV
socket, the connection can be made with an integrated modu-
lator via a coaxial cable. The module is preset to channel 36.
If this channel is already occupied by your video recorder or
by a terrestrial TV station, you can simply change the channel
(see adjusting the HF modulator). You can choose between
channel 25 and 60. The TV set must afterwards be set to the
same channel.
Aerial input selection
The receiver has 2 aerial outputs. The programming was se-
lected for the customary solution with a 14/18 volt LNC
switch-over. If another solution, such as dual cable distributi-
on in the first intermediate frequency level (H/V separated), or
multi- aerials or multi-feed are desired, the 2 aerial inputs
must be programmed according to programme position and
activated as follows: buttons.
Press the V/H button twice. Then using the ɼɦ buttons, se-
lect input A ´Q or B ´W. The following appears in the display:

Store the setting with the MEMORY button.
The display shows the current programme position again.
Should disturbances in the form of spikes appear (short black
or white lines) these can be eliminated by pressing the P/F
button and corrected with the ɼɦ button.
Press MEMORY again to store.
Note
The receiver has already been preset to all current program-
mes of various satellites. See yellow pages: TV Station Table.
It is easy if you want to arrange the programme order different-
ly. For information on this procedure, please refer to the detailed
description (see Mode functions COPY and Sort).
Entering the LNC oscillator frequency
The receiver can be switched between the most commonly
used LNC´s with the oscillator frequency 9.75 GHz or
10.00 GHz.
You can tune the inputs of your unit to these frequencies.
Switch the unit on while keeping the button V/H depressed.
Display: "In A

Use the ɼɦbuttons to select 9.75 GHz and 10 GHz for each
input.
For LNC´s with other oscillator frequencies, refer to the sec-
tion "Selecting the Programme/Frequency".
Important Information

Because the receiver only allows 4-place entries, the first
place is neither entered nor displayed.

ARD transmission frequency on Astra: 11494 MHz
Receiver input: 11494
ZDF transmission frequency on Astra: 10964 MHz

Enter the satellite transmission frequency. This requires the
correct selection of the oscillator frequency 9.75 or
10.00 GHz (refer to the section "Entering the LNC Oscillator
Frequency").
For LNC´s with an oscillator frequency other than 9.75 or
10.00 GHz, you must select 10 GHz. When this is the case,
the programme frequency to be set does not agree with the
satellite´s transmission frequency. Determine the correct fre-
quency by subtracting the LNC frequency from the satellite
transmission frequency.
Examples:
Transmission frequency of ARD with Astra: 11494 MHz
LNC frequency: –19665 MHz
Frequency to adjust: = 1829 MHz
Transm. frequ. of PRO 7 with Kopernikus: 12559 MHz
LNC frequency: –11475 MHz
Frequency to adjust: = 1084 MHz
Selecting vertical/horizontal polarization
Press the V/H button. The following appears in the display:
Selection can be made between V1, H1, V2 and H2 using the
ɼɦbuttons.
The LNC power supply amounts to 14 volt "vertical" and 18
volt "horizontal". Note that V2 and H2, a switching frequency
of 22 kHz is superimposed on the LNC voltage 14/18 volt.
For LCDs with magnetic polarizer, the corresponding the
skew optimal value must be adjusted after polarization selec-
tion. (See chapter "ALL" – Accepting the skew value).
Pressing V/H again displays the input ("In A" or "In b"), which
is selected by the ɼɦ button. (See chapter on selcting aerial
input).

After switching on with the power button,ßQ the receiver
automatically reselects the most previous programme
position (Last Station Memory).

Selecting programme/frequency
You can switch between the programme position and fre-
quency input mode using the P/F button.Programme
positions P1 to P199 and in frequency mode from 700 to
2050 MHz are indicated in the display.
The actual reception range of your unit depends on the LNC
used in each case.

When selecting the input frequency, take care that the set fre-
quency lies within the actual reception range of your LNC.
Adirect. frequency input is possible using the remote control
numeric buttons.
The frequency can be advanced upwards using the ɦbutton
in 10 MHz increments and moved down using the ɼbutton in
3 MHz increments.
You can tune the entire frequency range forward in "rapid
motion" and slower going backwards.
The frequency changes to 0.5 MHz increments with single
steps and corresponds to the finetuning.
Because the receiver only allows 4-place entries, the first

Audio
Press the AUDIO button to display the current audio mode;
for example:
By repeatingly pressing the AUDIO, selection can be made
between
sound 1 = mainsound, broad
sound 2 = subsound, mono narrow and
sound 3 = Pandaton*, Stereo.
*Panda/Wegener Communication for superior sound quality.
In case of stereo reception, an LED ßI on the receiver comes
on. Quick scrolling results from pressing one of the ɼɦ
button. For example:
The frequency can be changed between 5.00 MHz and
9.99 MHz in 10 kHz increments.
Constant pressure on one of the ɼɦ buttons results in quick
scrolling.
Direct frequency input is possible using the remote control
numeric buttons. Tuning begins only after the third digit is
entered.
Selecting radio operation
You can switch from SAT/TV to radio operation using the
RADIO button and visa versa. The most previous selected
programme is automatically selected (Last Station Memory).
The screen is dark in radio operation and the following
appears:
Radio operation is also indicated by an LED 9.
In order to take advantage of optimum sound quality, connect
the receiver to your hifi system. As the picture , which has
nothing to do with the sound, can disturb the sound, you can
switch the TV off.

Adjusting video range
Frequency modulated satellite signals are transmitted at
various shift values. The reciever must be appropriately
adjusted for correct picture quality.
Press the VIDEO button; video shift and polarity are shown in
display, for example:
Using buttons ɼɦ you can select between video shift h1 =
25 MHz, h2 = 22,5 MHz and h3 = 16 MHz and h -1, h -2 and
h -3.
For reception of C and S band with 4 or 2.5 Ghz LNCs, video
signal inversion is required; therefore, select h-1...h-3
setting.
Setting buttons ɼɦ up and down
The programme postition number is selected in the program-
me mode with the ɼɦ buttons.
With SAT reception, the programme positions
P1 ... P199 or with radio P1 ... P99 are shown in the display.
The OSD (On Screen Display) – shows the programme position
number in the upper right hand corner of the screen for
approx. 3 seconds.
The input is changed in the other modi with the ɼɦ buttons.
Constant pressure one of these buttons results in quick scrol-
ling.
Switch the receiver from stand by with the ɼɦ buttons to the
last selected SAT programme position
(Last Station Memory).

You can go faster, however, if you

The MODE button is used to select the various functions. You
use the ɼɦbuttons or the numeric buttons on the remote
control to change the settings in the mode you have selected.
COPY
"COPY" is shown in the display.
Using the ɼɦbuttons or the numeric buttons on the remote
control, select the programme position you want to copy to.
The programme position number flashes in the display.
The copy function is executed when you press the MEMORY
button. The original programme position is nevertheless kept,
and if required, can be reassigned.
COPY for radio broadcasts
The copy function is particularly useful for storing radio stations
which have not yet been programmed and are used as sound
subcarriers for TV programmer.
To use this function, first copy the desired TV programme
position to a free radio programme position.
Press MODE –"COPY" is shown in the display.
Then: Press RADIO and select the programme position using
the ɼɦbuttons or the numeric buttons on the remote control
and store by pressing MEMORY.
Now press AUDIO for sound 2 (mono) or sound 3 (stereo)
and enter the desired sound frequency using the ɼɦbuttons
or the numeric buttons on the remote control.
Press MEMORY to store – finished!
For Stereo only the respective lower sound frequency is
entered in the left channel and the right channel is automati-
cally stored.
Sort
Sort is shown in the display. This function sorts and exchanges
the programme positions.
Using the ɼɦbuttons or the numeric buttons on the remote
control, select the programme position where you want to
make an exchange. The programme position number flashes
in the display.
The sort function is executed when you press MEMORY; the
programme positions are exchanged.
SF – Special function
SSFF(special function ) is shown in the display.
Using the ɼɦbuttons, you can select an external switching
voltage of 0 or 12 volts.
This voltage is for programme position-related applications,
such as for a coaxial relay, multifeed process, and so forth.
This voltage is switched off in stand by.
POL – Polarizer
PPOOLL(Polarizer) is shown in the display.
Using the ɼɦbuttons, you can set a constant current of
approx. –70mA up to approx. +90mA for the magnetic polar-
izer from –32 to +31 with altogether 64 increments.
Determine the optimal value and store by pressing the
MEMORY button.
If you do not use a magnetic polarizer, you can use this volt-
age as an additional switching signal. With the corresponding
diode decoupling, up to 3 different programme position-related
signal voltages can be taken at point qQ (+12 Volts, 0 Volts and
–12 Volts).
Caution! The maximum constant current output is 70 mA.
ALL – Accepting the skew value
After you have found the optimum setting value, for example
of a horizontally polarized station,
Press MODE.
AALLLLappears in the display. Store by pressing MEMORY.
This now means that the optimum skew value is taken over
for all the horizontal programme positions. Then select a sta-
tion with vertical polarization, optimize the skew value in the
POL mode, call up with "AALLLL", and store with MEMORY. All
vertical programmed stations are automatically optimized.
The function AALLLLmeans considerable ease in making your
desired settings.

"IIII/IIII" – IF band width
"IIII" (wide) or "IIII" (narrow) is shown in the display.
Use the ɼɦbuttons to switch the IF band width to "IIII" (nar-
row) to improve the picture quality if the aerial signals are
weak or in case of signal distrubances.
Then press P/F again, correct the frequency in individual
increments until spikes are at a minimum, and store by pres-
sing MEMORY.
dEco – Decoder
dEEco (Decoder) is shown in the display. The ɼɦbuttons can be
used to switch the decoder to the signal path. You can choose
between "Auto" and "On".
Select "Auto" for decoders which deliver a switching voltage
for encoded transmissions, such as the case with the station
Premiere.
Select "On" for decoders without switching voltage evaluation.
The receiver is preset to "Auto".
Switch off the receiver.
With the AUDIO button depressed, switch off the receiver. The
current status appears in the display, for example, "External
audio" (video and audio signals are externally routed).
Keep the AUDIO depressed until the display changes to
»Internal audio« (only the video signal is externally routed).
On the EURO-AV decoder socket, either the video and audio
signal can be taken for decoding, or only the video signal if
the audio signal is not encoded.

nor 1 / nor 2 / nor 3 – norm
The preset mode point is shown in the display.
Using the ɼɦbuttons, the signal on the decoder´s pin 19 can
be switched between
nor 1 = clamped video signal,
nor 2 = base band with PAL deemphasis and
nor 3 = base band with linear deemphasis.
dEE – with sound 1
This mode point is only called up if, in the AUDIO Mode, you
have selected "Main sound, Mono, Sound 1"; you can then
switch between audio deemphasis between J 17 and 50 µ sec
with the ɼɦbuttions.
This mode point is not required for "Sound 2" and
"Sound 3".
HF – setting the modulator channel
"HHFF" is shown in the display.
Using the buttons ɼɦyou can select a HF channel between
C 25 and C 60 of the PLL modulator. Channels C 21 through
C 24 are not specified.
This receiver's special feature is parallel playback of VCR
recordings via the EURO-AV cable and the connected televisi-
on set while simultaneously allowing the SAT signal to be fed
by the receiver's modulator to a separate television set or to
an available house aerial system.

ATS – Automatic Tuning System
The automatic tuning system (ATS) is especially suited if you
use LNC´s with oscillator frequencies other than 9.75 or
10 GHz. It saves you lengthy conversion calculations.
The next receivable station in direction of increasing frequen-
cies will be searched and tuned to.
To use this function, first start the tuning function in the ATS
mode with the ɦbutton. The picture is optimally tuned when
the programme position number and the frequency flash in
the display.
Make a note of this station and its frequency.
Using the MEMORY button stores all signals with sufficient
qualtiy strength. This process automatically shifts the pro-
gramme positions by one position.
Restart ATS by pressing ɦ.
If the tuning function tunes to a signal which cannot be recei-
ved (D2 MAC or encoded signals), restart the search without
storing the signal by pressing ɦ.
This process continues until you arrive at the initial position
of the noted frequency. Do not store this programme position
as it was stored at the beginning of the procedure.
Now select the other polarization with the V/H button.
Call up ATS again with the MODE button and as described
above, restart the tuning function.
Note: the displayed frequency is different from the first one
and must be registered for the first time.
Restart the tuning function again until the new initial position
is reached.
The tuning function is continuous, which means that when it
reaches the highest frequency (2050 MHz), it automatically
starts again at 700 MHz.
Only carry out desired picture and sound corrections after
the ATS function is complete, and never during the course of
the function.
You can now easily set up the programme position sequence
as desired.
CodE – Child lock
You can protect your receiver against unauthorized use (child
lock).
Using the numeric buttons on the remote control, enter your
personal 4-place identification number, for example 2222.
Activate the programme lock with the Obutton.
"SSEETT" is shown in the display for approx. 3 seconds, followed
by the current programme position display.
The "lock" is activated after you switch the receiver off.
"CodE" appears when you next switch the receiver on, regard-
less of whether you switch it on with the mains power button
or out of stand by.
You are prompted to enter your personal identification num-
ber. Your inputs cannot be seen in the display.
The receiver remains in stand by before the correct number is
entered. Entering the correct number unlocks the receiver
and switches it to the most previously selected programme
position.
Note that the lock nevertheless remains active, which
means that the lock is activated once again the next time you
switch the receiver off.
Clearing the programme lock
Select mode point "CodE",
and enter the correct identification number (2222) – visible in
the display – and delete by pressing the Obutton.
The following appears in the display for approx. 3 seconds:
The receiver is unlocked and switches to the programme
position mode.
Do not forget your personal identification number!
If you should forget your personal identification number, the
key Éon the last page (fold) will help you. You can use this
key combination to delete the number, thus allowing you to
operated the receiver as normal.

The programme position number is displayed for approx.
3 seconds in the TV mode if you press the Obutton.
In addition, this button is required for a variety of other func-
tions.
Battery display
If the battery voltage of the battery in the infrared remote con-
trol falls below a certain level, "bAAtt" appears in the display for
approx. 5 seconds every time you carry out a remote control
command.
Switching remote control
In order to control and operate two independent SAT receivers
simultaneously, you can switch the remote control between
the two receivers. When you switch the receiver on with the
P/F button depressed, the current level "IIrII" appears for
approx. 3 seconds.
If you keep the P/F button depressed, the receiver switches to
the second level, "IIr22".
The remote control is converted by means of a soldered
connection. Your dealer will be glad to help if you have any
inquiries.
Datalink – Data transfer
Two complete memory data records can be transferred from
a transmitting receiver to a receiving receiver via the VCR
socket ´Z.
Connect both units with a cinch cable.
Switch the receiving unit on.
Switch the transmitting unit on with the ɦbutton held down.
It then transfers the programme data to the receiving unit.
"SEnd" (sending data) appears in the LED display. When the
data are recognized by the receiving unit, the LED display of
the receiving unit switches from the programme number to
"rEC" (receiving data).
The transmission lasts approx. 50 seconds. As soon as it is
successfully completed, "P1" appears in both displays for
programm number 1.
If an error occures during transmission, "Err" appears in the
display of the receiving unit.
Datalink is only possible with units which, like your unit,
allow LNC frequency selection.
Direct programme selection
You can directly select programmes by pressing the corre-
sponding buttons “
1... “
9.
Pressing the respective button 1... 9 causes the programme
position number (for example, P1..) to appear on the screen
for approx. 3 seconds. Within this time, you can enter the
number of a programme with the buttons 0 ... 9.
If you do not make any inputs, the programme position num-
ber jumps to the one-position. After a brief interval, the num-
ber disappears from the screen.
199 programme positions are available for the TV, and 99 for
the radio.
Switching between radio/TV
Use the “
0button to switch between the radio and the TV.
The most previously selected programme position is automa-
tically selected. In radio mode, the screen is dark and "RADIO"
appears with the programme position number in the upper
part of the screen. An LED on the receiver indicates radio ope-
ration (see the chapter on selecting radio operation).

Timer and Video recorder
This menu item makes it possible to switch a SAT receiver on
and off at a specific time in order to record the transmission on
a video recorder which is programmed for the same time.
If you want to record 2 different transmissions at different
times, switch the receiver to the programme which you want
to record first.
Programme the video recorder to the desired time. The SAT
receiver remains switched to this programme position until it
is time for the next recording.
The SAT receiver switches to the preselected programme in
accordance with the timer programme.
The video recorder also switches to the second programme.
Both units switch off at the end of the programmed time, with
the receiver switching to stand by.
With up to 8 timer programmes, the receiver can be controlled
by means of a prepared GRUNDIG video recorder.
The requisite remote control cable is availabe in the GRUNDIG
accessory programme.
Programming the timer
Press the “
Ǻbutton on the remote control and using the
Obutton, select the timer function menu.
Switching the TIMER on and off
Use the Ebutton to switch the timer on and the Rbutton
to switch it off.
A red LED on the receiver indicates that the TIMER is on.
When you switch the timer from off to on, the previously
entered times are displayed, but the date is automatically
updated.
If you want to record in the time which is displayed, no further
inputs are necessary.
If you desire other times, you must reenter the date and time.

Entering programme position, date, and time
Timer programming is very simple. It is even possible, for
example, to preprogramme the timer for another programme
during a TV transmission.
With the “
ǵ“
Ƕbuttons on the remote control, select the
appropriate lines in the timer menu and enter the programme
position, date and time with the numeric buttons; for
instance, for May 22, 1993, enter 22 05 93.
During the preprogrammed time, the timer LED flashes and
indicates that you can no longer make settings on the receiver
or with the remote control - any settings will disturb the
recording.
Radio recording
If you want to programme a radio recording, you must switch
from TV to radio by pressing the “
0/ RADIO button in the
line PR. (programme) on the remote control.
Press the “
Ǻbutton twice to exit the timer menu.
