2.3 Description
The Head-end Digital Modulator HDM 565 C, in the following called QPSK-QAM
module converts two QPSK -modulated data streams into two QAM-modulated
data streams. The QPSK-QAM module has two SAT inputs and one HF out-
put. Components (e.g. LNB) which are connected upstream can be powered
through the SAT inputs.
The QPSK-QAM module is equipped with two channel strips (“A” and “B”). They
are indicated in the head-end station display with “Bx …A” and “Bx …B”.
The output symbol rate (Stuffing) is defined to the value of SR = 6875 and is
not adjustable.
Two integrated LEDs indicate if the respective channel strip is switched on (LED
illuminates) or off, and also provide an indication of the signal quality based
on their colour.
The HF output signals are sent through the HF output of the QPSK-QAM module
to the output collector.
When the head-end station is switched on, the two-line LC display shows the
“SETUP” menu and the software version of the control unit. The head-end station
output level can be adjusted in this menu.
The QPSK-QAM module operating software can be updated (Software “BE-
Flash”) using a PC or notebook via the 9-pin SUB-D socket on the head-end
station. You can find the current operating software for the QPSK-QAM module
on the website “www.gss.tv”.
The QPSK-QAM module is designed exclusively for use in the STC 160 head-
end station.

3 Installation
Caution
– Ensure the head-end station is mounted so it will not be able to vibrate.
Avoid, for example, mounting the head-end station onto a lift shaft or
any other wall or floor construction that vibrates in a similar way.
– Before installing or changing a module, switch off the head-end station
or unplug the power cable from the mains power socket.
Take measures to protect against ESD!
• Open the housing of the head-end station in accordance with the assembly
instructions for the STC 160.
3.1 Installing the QPSK-QAM module
Caution
– When installing a module, make sure that it is inserted in one of the
long, numbered grooves in front of the contact strip on the board at the
rear wall of the housing.
– The shorter, non-numbered grooves without a contact strip on the board
at the rear wall of the housing are for add-on modules only.
• Insert the QPSK-QAM module in grooves Aand Bof an open slot (with
contact strip on the board at the rear wall of the housing).
• Gently slide the QPSK-QAM module into the head-end station, making sure
that it makes contact with the contact strip on the board at the rear wall of
the housing.





3.2 Connecting the QPSK-QAM module
• Connect SAT-IF inputs Con the QPSK-QAM module with the correspond-
ing cable terminals or with one of the outputs F(if applicable) on the retro-
fitted SAT IF input distributor.
• After programming, connect the modulator output Dwith one of the input
sockets Eon the output collector.
• Connect the HF output Gon the output collector with the cable system via
one of the cable terminals to be retrofitted in the base of the housing.

4 The control panel at a glance
4.1 Menu items
Program the QPSK-QAM module using the buttons on the head-end station con-
trol panel. The menus appear on the two-line display of the control panel.
The parameters and functions to be set are underlined.
You can use the

5 Programming
5.1 Preparation
•
Connect the test receiver to the HF output on the QPSK-QAM module D or to the
HF output G on the output collector if it is already connected (page 7).
• Adjust the test receiver to the output channel of the channel strip to be set.
• Switch on the channel strip (modulator) if necessary. For each channel
strip, there is an LED which indicates if the channel strip is switched on (see
illustration).
5.2 Level setting
Notes:
– In the “LEVEL control” menu, the QPSK-
QAM module generates an equally
powerful HF carrier on the video
carrier frequency of the respective
channel. In this way, the level of the
QPSK-QAM module can be set with
an analogue TV test receiver to the
video carrier frequency of the respec-
tive channel.
– In order to prevent interference within
the head-end station and the cable sys-
tem, the output level of the QPSK-QAM
module must be lowered by approx.
10 dB compared to analogue modula-
tors at 64 QAM, and by approx. 4 dB
compared to analogue modulators at
256 QAM.
• Balance the output levels of channel strips “A” and “B” if the difference in
level is ≥1 dB (see chapter “Adjusting the output levels of the channel strips”,
page 16).
• Using the level control (-20 dB), adjust the output levels of the modulator of
the QPSK-QAM module to match the output levels of the modulators of the
other modules.
