2.4 descrIptIon
The HDMT 263 and HDMT 265 modules, in the following called COFDM mod-
ules, are frequency converters and convert two incoming COFDM -modulated
signals into two outgoing COFDM-modulated signals with free selectable fre-
quency (HDMT 263 –> VHF / HDMT 265 –> UHF, see Technical Data page 4).
The COFDM modules are programmed via the head-end station control panel.
Each COFDM module is equipped with two channel strips ("A", "B") which
are indicated in the control panel display as "Bx…A" and "Bx…B". F or each
channel strip, there is an HF input and a loop-through output, as well as one F
connector (HF output) for both channel strips .
When the head-end station is switched on, the two-line LC display shows the
"SETUP" menu and the software version of the control panel. In this menu the
output level of the head-end station can be set.
To operate these modules the software version of the control panel must be
"V8" or higher. You can find the current operating software on the website
"www.gss.de".
The COFDM modules are designed exclusively for use in the STC 160 head-
end station.

– Ensure the head-end station is mounted so it will not be able to vibrate.
Avoid, for example, mounting the head-end station onto a lift shaft or any
other wall or floor construction that vibrates in a similar way.
– Before installing or changing a module, switch off the head-end station or
unplugthepowercablefromthemainspowersocket.
 – TakemeasurestoprotectagainstESD!
 • Open the housing of the head-end station in accordance with the assembly
instructions for the STC 160.
3.1 InstallIng the cofdm module
– WheninstallingtheCOFDMmodule,makesurethatitisinsertedinalong
groove in front of a contact strip on the board at the rear wall of the hous-
ing.
– The shorter grooves without a contact strip on the board at the rear wall of
the housing are for add-on modules only.

delivery) .
Note:
At the loop-through outputs H the HF signals of the according HF inputs C
are available.

4.1 menu Items
Program the COFDM module using the buttons on the head-end station control
unit. The menus appear on the two-line display of the control unit.
The parameters and functions to be set are underlined.
You can use the button to select the following menu items:

5 programmIng
The following examples show how the HDMT 265 module is programmed. You
can set HDMT 263 in the same way.
– To avoid interferences at an activated channel strip a channel must be pro-
grammed and a corresponding aerial signal must be connected. A terminat-
ing resistor is not sufficient.
 – Whenconvertinginputchannelswhoselowerorupperflankingchannelis
alsoinuse,donotusethecorresponding(upperorlower)flankingchannel
of the output channel.
– The COFDM signal is normally transmitted with a bandwidth of 8 MHz. This
means that you can only use the channel centre frequency of the existing
channel grid in the range of channels C21…C69 (frequency grid 8 MHz).
The CCIR channel grid is 7 MHz in the range of the lower frequency bands
(channelsC5…C12).If8MHzCOFDMsignalpackagesaretransmitted
in these channel ranges, this will result in interference (overlapping) and
transmission problems.
For programming in these channel ranges and in the frequency ranges
belowthem,werecommendstartingwithfrequency306MHzgoingback
in steps of 8 MHz (see frequency table on page 20). Please note thereby that
many receivers cannot receive the channel ranges S21…S41 (306 …
466 MHz).
– When converting the S 7 … S 20, including C 5 … C 12 (bandwidth
7 MHz) input channels to the C 21 … C 69 (bandwidth 8 MHz) output
channels, note that these can only be received from devices that process
stations in the UHF range with a 7 MHz bandwidth.
– If you convert VHF channels into VHF channels of other frequencies, you
must set the output signal bandwidth at 7 MHz in the "BANDWIDTH" menu
(see page 16).
– When converting the S 21 … C 69 channels to S 9 … S 16 output chan-
nels, including C 5 … C 12, set the bandwidth to 8 MHz for the output
channel in the "BANDWIDTH" menu.
Note that the converted stations can only be received by devices in the VHF
range that process stations with a bandwidth of 8 MHz.

 • Connect the test receiver to the HF output on the COFDM module D or to the
HF output G on the output collector if it is already connected (page 7).
 • Adjustthetestreceivertotheoutputchannelofthemodulator.
 • Switchonthemodulatorifnecessary.Forthemodulator,therearegreen
shining LEDs which indicate if the modulator is switched on (see illustra-
tions).

In order to prevent interference within the head-end station and the cable sys-
tem, the output level of the COFDM module must be lowered by approx. 10 dB
compared to analogue modulators.

 • Usethe buttons to position the cursor under the digit to be set for
the frequency or channel display then use to set the desired output
frequency or channel.
—> The COFDM signal is normally transmitted with a bandwidth of
8 MHz. This means that you can only use the channel centre frequen-
cy of the existing channel grid in the range of channels C21…C69
(frequency grid 8 MHz).
The CCIR channel grid is 7 MHz in the range of the lower frequency
bands(channelsC5…C12).If8MHzCOFDMsignalpackages
are transmitted in these channel ranges, this will result in interfer-
ence (overlapping) and transmission problems.
For programming in these channel ranges and in the frequency rang-
es below them, we recommend starting with frequency 306 MHz
goingbackinstepsof8MHz(seefrequencytableonpage20).
Please note thereby that many receivers cannot receive the channel
ranges S21…S41 (306 … 466 MHz).
—> The channel range (VHF/UHF) that can be set depends on the type
of cassette used.

Only change the fine-tuning in exceptional circumstances and if there is a well-
founded reason for doing so, since once you have changed it, all connected
receivers of the cable system must be adjusted to match it by corresponding

fine-tuning corrections.
 • Pressthe button to select the fine-tuning submenu.
 • Use to fine-tune the output channel (63 … -64).

6 fInal procedures
After installing the head-end station, upgrading accessories or installing mod-
ules it is necessary to tighten all cable connections, cable terminals and cover
screws in order to maintain compliance with current EMC regulations.
 • Securelytightenthecableconnections(Fconnectors) using an open-ended
spanner (spanner gap 11 mm).
 • Mountthebaseplateandthefrontcover(see STC 160 assembly instruc-
tions).
