INTRODUCTION
The PGSD834 is a brand-name smoke detector with an
integrated Haibrain transmitter. The PGSD834 Smoke Detector is
for use with the Haibrain ProGuard800 systems. When you wish
to know more about the complete system, its possibilities and
its settings, then you can check out the installation manual or
visit http://www.haibrain.com.
1. GENERAL INFORMATION AND FUNCTION
The smoke detector can detect incipient low temperature fires
and open fires with smoke development. The smoke detector
operates by the optical principle. There are no radioactive
substances in this detector.
The smoke detector incorporates the following features:
• It monitors rooms for the development of smoke.
•
It has an integrated signal transmitter to trigger a Haibrain
ProGuard800 Security system.
2. APPLICATION
The radio smoke detector is intended for the detection of
smoke in interiors by the use of optical and acoustic warnings,

as well as wireless transmission over distances of up to 30
meters. Range may vary due to battery and temperature
conditions. The PGSD834 smoke detector does not sense gas,
heat or smokeless flames! The equipment may not be modified
under any circumstances.
3. POSITIONING
It is advisable to install several smoke detectors in your home.
At least one smoke detector should be installed on each floor.
This ensures that an effective warning is possible when a fire
starts. One smoke detector must be installed in the area
outside the bedroom which is used as the exit (corridor and/or
staircase). Also ensure that you install the smoke detector at a
location where it can be easily heard, even through the closed
door of the bedroom! (Otherwise you will not wake up during
a fire alarm!). Recommended best and acceptable locations to
mount smoke detectors (figure A):The smoke detector should
be installed on the ceiling in the centre of the room. Smoke
rises and gathers in this area (figure B) and placing the smoke
alarm here guarantees the earliest possible alarm warning. For
sloping roofs, the smoke alarm should be installed about 1
meter from the highest point, as displayed in figure C. Smoke
detectors can be installed in all rooms, but not in the bathroom
or directly above the cooking area in the kitchen. To avoid
false alarms, do not install the PGSD834 smoke detector in your
kitchen, garage, in dusty places, in places with a higher than
average air flow (near ventilation, open windows), near metal
and in places where the temperature is below 5°C or above
37°C. Ensure that the smoke detector is not installed directly on
or near large metal objects as they can affect the radio range.
Before installing the PGSD834 smoke detector on your ceiling
or the wall, ensure that the PGSD834 is within range of your
Haibrain security system. You can test this by pushing the test
PGSD834 5

button of the PGSD834. The Haibrain security system should
now be triggered, depending on the settings. In the case of
range problems, choose a different location for your PGSD834
smoke detector. Moving the PGSD834 just a few centimetres
can make a big difference in range.
4. INSTALLATION
The following procedure explains the installation of the
PGSD834 wireless smoke detector and its registration to the
receiver.
To install smoke detectors:
1. Open the cover.
2. Install the batteries into the detector’s batteries
Compartment. See Figure Batteries Compartment
3. The PGSD834 enters Test mode.
From the Programming menu, select Devices, Zones [911].

WARNING:
•This detector is not suitable for installation in a hazardous
location, as defined in the national electrical code.
WARNING: Do not test with flame. This can set fire to the
alarm and damage the house. We do not recommend testing
with smoke as the results can be misleading unless special
device is used.
6. REPLACING THE BATTERIES
Fresh batteries should last about three years. When battery
power is low and replacement is necessary, the alarm will
“beep” and the LED will flash at the same time about once per
35 seconds for at least 30 days. For maximum reliability, replace
battery at least once a year.
Test the alarm for correct operation using the test button
whenever the batteries are replaced.
If the power indicator light ceases flashing, replace the battery.
Be sure to replace the battery as soon as possible to ensure
proper operation and to avoid a leaking battery. Leakage
could cause damage to the alarm, furniture and carpeting.
WARNING: Use of any other battery than specified in the
technical data may be detrimental to the operation of the
Smoke Detector.

7. CLEANING YOUR SMOKE DETECTOR
Clean your smoke detector regularly. Use a soft bristle brush or
the brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner to remove dust
from the sides and cover slots where the smoke enters. Keep
cover closed while cleaning. Do not vacuum or brush inside the
Smoke Detector.
WARNING: Do not paint your smoke detector.
Other than the maintenance and cleaning described in this
leaflet, no other customer servicing of the product is required.
Repairs, when needed, must be performed only by the
manufacturer.
8. RED INDICATOR
When the red LED
indicator (see
Figure) flashes once
in 30 seconds, it
indicates the
detector is under
normal operation.
When the red LED
flashes very
frequently and an
audible alarm
sounds simultaneously, it indicates that the detector senses
smoke.

NOTE:
The red LED behaves according to one of the following set
modes:
Mode 1: The red LED indicator will not reset automatically at
the end of an alarm event. This means that after the smoke
chamber is cleared, the audible alarm will stop automatically,
but the red LED indicator will continue to flash, until it is
manually restored by the user. To restore – press the test
button for 2-3 seconds, the LED will stop flashing.

Mode 2 (Default): The red LED will reset automatically at the
end of an alarm event.
The user can check to which mode the detector is defined and
switch between modes.
• To check the mode, press the Test button. The red LED will
light up. If the red LED lights up continuously the detector is in
Mode 1. If the red LED is blinking the detector is in Mode 2.
• To switch from one mode to another, press the Test button
for 8 seconds. The buzzer will sound and the red LED will
change its behaviour either from a continuous light to a
blinking light or from a blinking light to a continuous light.
9. WARNING! LIMITATIONS OF SMOKE ALARMS
Wireless smoke alarms are very reliable, but may not work
under all conditions. No fire alarm provides total protection of
life or property. Smoke alarms are not a substitute for life
insurance.
Smoke alarms require a source of power to work.
This smoke alarm will not operate and the alarm will not sound
if batteries are dead or not installed properly.
Smoke alarms may not be heard. A sound sleeper or someone
who has taken drugs or alcohol may not awaken if the alarm is
installed outside a bedroom. Closed or partially closed doors
and distance can block sound. This alarm is not designed for
the hearing impaired.
Smoke alarms may not always activate and provide warning
early enough. Smoke alarms only activate when enough smoke
reaches the alarm. If a fire starts in a chimney, wall, roof, on
the other side of closed doors, or on a different level of the
property enough smoke may not reach the alarm for it to
alarm.
Smoke alarms are a significant help in reducing loss, injury and
even death.
However, no matter how good a detection device is, nothing
works perfectly under every circumstance and we must warn
you that you cannot expect a smoke alarm to ensure that you
will never suffer any damage or injury.
