NOTE: The following requirements reference various
Massachusetts and national codes not contained in
this document.
For all side wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment
installedineverydwelling,building orstructureusedinwhole
orin part forresidentialpurposes,including those ownedor
operated by the Commonwealth and where the side wall
exhaust vent termination is less than seven (7) feet above
finished grade in the area of the venting, including but not
limited to decks and porches, the following requirements
shall be satisfied:
Installation of Carbon Monoxide Detectors
At the time of installation of the side wall horizontal vented
gasfueledequipment,theinstallingplumberor gasfitter shall
observethatahardwiredcarbon monoxide detector with an
alarmandbatteryback-upisinstalledonthefloorlevelwhere
thegas equipmentis to beinstalled. In addition,the install-
ingplumber orgasfittershall observethat a batteryoperat-
edor hard wiredcarbonmonoxidedetector with analarmis
installedon each additionallevelofthe dwelling, buildingor
structure served by the side wall horizontal vented gas fu-
eledequipment. It shallbethe responsibilityofthe property
owner to secure the services of qualified licensed profes-
sionals for the installation of hard wired carbon monoxide
detectors.
Intheevent that thesidewallhorizontallyvented gas fueled
equipment is installed in a crawl space or an attic, the hard
wiredcarbonmonoxidedetectorwithalarmandbatteryback-
up may be installed on the next adjacent floor level.
In the event that the requirements of this subdivision can
not be met at the time of completion of installation, the
ownershall havea period ofthirty (30)days to complywith
theaboverequirements;provided, however,thatduringsaid
thirty(30) dayperiod, a batteryoperated carbonmonoxide
detector with an alarm shall be installed.
Approved Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Eachcarbon monoxide detectoras required inaccordance
with the above provisions shall comply with NFPA720 and
beANSI/UL2034 listed and IAS certified.
Signage
A metal or plastic identification plate shall be permanently
mountedto theexteriorof thebuildingat a minimumheight
ofeight (8) feetabovegradedirectly in linewiththe exhaust
ventterminal forthehorizontally ventedgasfueled heating
applianceorequipment. The signshallread,in print sizeno
lessthan one-half(1/2) inch insize, “GAS VENT DIRECT-
LY BELOW. KEEP CLEAR OFALL OBSTRUCTIONS”.
Requirements for the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts
Inspection
Thestate orlocal gas inspector of theside wall horizontally
ventedgasfueled equipment shall notapprovetheinstalla-
tionunless,uponinspection,theinspectorobservescarbon
monoxidedetectorsandsignageinstalledinaccordancewith
theprovisionsof248CMR5.08(2)(a)1through4.
Exemptions
Thefollowingequipmentisexemptfrom248CMR5.08(2)(a)1
through4:
• Theequipment listed inChapter10 entitled “Equipment
Not Required To Be Vented” in the most current edition
of NFPA54 as adopted by the Board; and
• ProductApproved side wall horizontally vented gas fu-
eledequipmentinstalled in a roomorstructureseparate
fromthe dwelling, buildingor structure usedin whole or
inpart forresidentialpurposes.
MANUFACTURERREQUIREMENTS
Gas Equipment Venting System Provided
Whenthe manufacturer of ProductApprovedsidewallhor-
izontallyvented gasequipment provides aventing system
designor venting systemcomponents with theequipment,
the instructions provided by the manufacturer for installa-
tionof the equipmentandthe venting systemshallinclude:
• Detailed instructions for the installation of the venting
system design or the venting system components; and
• A complete parts list for the venting system design or
ventingsystem.
Gas Equipment Venting System NOT Provided
When the manufacturer of a Product Approved side wall
horizontallyvented gas fueledequipmentdoesnot provide
the parts for venting the flue gases, but identifies “special
venting systems”, the following requirements shall be sat-
isfiedby themanufacturer:
• Thereferenced“specialventingsystem”instructionsshall
beincluded with theapplianceorequipment installation
instructions;and
• The“specialventingsystems”shallbe ProductApproved
by the Board, and the instructions for that system shall
includea parts listand detailed installationinstructions.
A copy of all installation instructions for all Product Ap-
provedside wall horizontally ventedgasfueled equipment,
all venting instructions, all parts lists for venting instruc-
tions, and/or all venting design instructions shall remain
with the appliance or equipment at the completion of the
installation.
