These units MUST use one of the vent systems
described in the Installing the Fireplace section of
the Installers Guide.NO OTHER vent systems or
components MAY BE USED.
This gas fireplace and vent assembly MUST be
vented directly to the outside and MUST NEVER be
attached to a chimney serving a separate solid fuel
burning appliance. Each gas appliance MUST USE
a separate vent system. Common vent systems are
PROHIBITED.
INSPECT the external vent cap on a regular basis to
make sure that no debris is interfering with the air
flow.
The glass door assembly MUST be in place and
sealed, and the trim door assembly MUST be in
place on the fireplace before the unit can be placed
into safe operation.
DO NOT OPERATE this appliance with the glass
door removed, cracked, or broken. Replacement of
the glass door should be performed by a licensed
or qualified service person. DO NOT strike or slam
the glass door.
The glass door assembly SHALL ONLY be
replaced as a complete unit, as supplied by the gas
fireplace manufacturer. NO SUBSTITUTE material
may be used.
DO NOT USE abrasive cleaners on the glass door
assembly. DO NOT ATTEMPT to clean the glass
door when it is hot.
Turn off the gas before servicing this appliance. It is
recommended that a qualified service technician
perform an appliance check-up at the beginning of
each heating season.
Any safety screen or guard removed for servicing
must be replaced before operating this appliance.
DO NOT place furniture or any other combustible
household objects within 36 inches of the fireplace
front.
READ and UNDERSTAND all instructions carefully
before starting the installation. FAILURE TO
FOLLOW these installation instructions may result
in a possible fire hazard and will void the warranty.
Prior to the first firing of the fireplace, READ the

DO NOT USE this appliance if any part has been
under water. Immediately CALL a qualified service
technician to inspect the unit and to replace any part
of the control system and any gas control which has
been under water.
THIS UNIT IS NOT FOR USE WITH SOLID FUEL.
Installation and repair should be PERFORMED by a
qualified service person. The appliance and venting
system should be INSPECTED before initial use
and at least annually by a professional service
person. More frequent cleaning may be required
due to excessive lint from carpeting, bedding
material, etc. It is IMPERATIVE that the unit’s
control compartment, burners, and circulating air
passageways BE KEPT CLEAN to provide for
adequate combustion and ventilation air.
Always KEEP the appliance clear and free from
combustible materials, gasoline, and other
flammable vapors and liquids.
NEVER OBSTRUCT the flow of combustion and
ventilation air. Keep the front of the appliance
CLEAR of all obstacles and materials for servicing
and proper operations.
Due to the high temperature, the appliance should
be LOCATED out of traffic areas and away from
furniture and draperies. Clothing or flammable
material SHOULD NOT BE PLACED on or near the
appliance.
Children and adults should be ALERTED to the
hazards of high surface temperature and should

feet(in theUnited States),it may benecessary todecrease
the input rating by changing the existing burner orifice to a
smallersize. Input should be reducedfour percent(4%) for
each1,000feet above sealevel,unless the heatingvalueof
the gas has been reduced, in which case this general rule
will not apply. To identify the proper orifice size, check with
the local gas utility.
Wheninstallingthis fireplaceatan elevation between2,000
and4,500feet(inCanada),the inputratingmustbereduced
by ten percent (10%).
When installing this fireplace at an elevation above 4,500
feet (in Canada), check with local authorities.
Consult your local gas utility for assistance in determining
theproper orifice foryour location.

Getting Started
Introducing the Heat-N-Glo Gas Fireplaces
Heat-N-Glodirect ventgas fireplaces aredesigned tooper-
ate with all combustion air siphoned from outside of the
building and all exhaust gases expelled to the outside.
The information contained in this Installers Guide, unless
noted otherwise, applies to all models and gas control
systems.Gasfireplace diagrams,includingthe dimensions,
are shown in this section.
Pre-install Preparation
Thisgas fireplace and itscomponents are tested and safe
when installed in accordance with this Installers Guide.
Report to your dealer any parts damaged in shipment,
particularly the condition of the glass. Do not install any
unit with damaged, incomplete, or substitute parts.
The vent system components and optional trim doors are
shippedin separate packages.The gaslogsare packaged
separately and must be field installed.
Read all of the instructions before starting the
installation. Follow these instructions carefully during
the installation to ensure maximum safety and benefit.
Failure to follow these instructions will void the
owner’s warranty and may present a fire hazard.
TheHeat-N-GloWarrantywill be voidedby,andHeat-N-Glo
disclaims any responsibility for, the following actions:
• Installation of any damaged fireplace or vent system
component.
• Modification of the fireplace or direct vent system.
• Installation other than as instructed by Heat-N-Glo.
• Improper positioning of the gas logs or the glass door.
• Installationand/or useof any component part notmanu-
factured and approved by Heat-N-Glo, not withstanding
anyindependenttestinglaboratoryorotherpartyapproval
of such component part or accessory.

When planning a fireplace installation, it’s necessary to
determine:
•Where the unit is to be installed.
•The vent system configuration to be used.
•Gas supply piping.
•Electrical wiring.
•Framingand finishing details.
•Whether optional accessories—devices such as a fan,
wall switch, or remote control—are desired.
If the fireplace is to be installed on carpeting or tile, or on
any combustible material other than wood flooring, the
fireplace should be installed on a metal or wood panel that
extends the full width and depth of the fireplace.

Clearance Requirements
Thetop and back of thefireplace aredefined by stand-offs.
The minimum clearance to a perpendicular wall extending
past the face of the fireplace is 3 inches (76.2mm). The
back of the fireplace may be recessed 17 1/2 inches
(445mm)into combustible construction.
Thedistance fromthe unitto combustibleconstruction
is to be measured from the unit outer wrap surface to
the combustible construction, NOT from the screw
heads that secure the unit togther.
Constructing the Chase
A chase is a vertical box-like structure built to enclose the
gas fireplace and/or its vent system. Vertical vents that run
on the outside of a building may be, but are not required to
be, installed inside a chase.
CAUTION: TREATMENT OF FIRESTOP SPACERS AND
CONSTRUCTIONOF THECHASE MAYVARYWITHTHE
TYPE OF BUILDING. THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE NOT
SUBSTITUTES FOR THE REQUIREMENTS OF LOCAL
BUILDINGCODES. THEREFORE, YOUR LOCAL BUILD-
ING CODES MUST BE CHECKED TO DETERMINE THE
REQUIREMENTS FOR THESE STEPS.
Factory-builtfireplace chasesshould be constructed in the
manner of all outside walls of the home to prevent cold air
drafting problems. The chase should not break the outside
buildingenvelope inany manner.
Thismeans thatthe walls, ceiling, base plateand cantilever
floorof thechase shouldbe insulated.Vapor and airinfiltra-
tionbarriers shouldbe installedin thechase asper regional
codesfor therest ofthe home.Additionally, Heat-N-Glorec-
ommendsthattheinsidesurfacesbesheetrockedand taped
for maximum air tightness.
Tofurther prevent drafts, the firestopsshould becaulked to
seal gaps. Gas line holes and other openings should be
caulkedorstuffed withinsulation.If theunitis beinginstalled
onacement slab,werecommend thatalayer ofplywoodbe
placed underneath to prevent conducting cold up into the
room. Be sure to include spark arrestors for woodburning
units if they are required.

A. Vent System Approvals
Thismodel hasvent startingcollars on the back of the unit.
This model uses SL D-series direct vent and SL-Flex vent
components(see Figures 4and 5).Approved ventsystem
componentsare labeled for identification. Thispipe is test-
ed and listed as an approved component of the fireplace.
Thepipe is testedto be runinside an enclosed wall. There
isnorequirementforinspectionopeningsateachjointwithin
thewall. There is no requiredpitch forhorizontal vent runs.

Identifying Vent Components
The vent systems installed on this gas fireplace may in-
clude one, two, or three 90°elbow assemblies. The rela-
tionships of vertical rise to horizontal run in vent configura-
tions using 90° elbows MUST BE strictly adhered to. The
rise to run relationships are shown in the venting drawings
andtables.Referto thediagramsonthe next severalpages.
NOTE: Two 45° elbows may be used in place of one
90° elbow. You MUST always maintain the MAXIMUM
and MINIMUM rise-to-run ratios in the vent system when
using 45° elbows.

B. Installing Vent Components
1. Attach the First Vent Component to the
Starting Collars
To attach the first vent component to the starting collars
ofthe fireplace:
• Apply a 3/8 inch (9.5mm) bead of stove cement around
thefireplace inner vent starting collar.
• Lockthe vent componentsinto place bysliding the con-
centricpipe sections with four(4) equally spaced interi-
or beads intothefireplacecollarorpreviouslyinstalledcom-
ponentendwithfour(4)equallyspacedindentedsections.
• When the internal beads of each outer pipe line up, ro-
tate the pipe section clockwise about one-quarter (1/4)
turn.Theventpipeisnow lockedtogether.

3. Install Support Brackets
For Horizontal Runs - Theventsystemmust besupported

To install support brackets for horizontal runs:
• Place the pipe supports around the vent pipe.
• Nail the pipe supports to the framing members.

• Continue adding vent components, locking each suc-
ceedingcomponent into place.
• Ensurethateach succeeding ventcomponentis secure-
lyfitted and lockedinto the precedingcomponent in the
vent system.
• 90° elbows may be installed and rotated to any point
around the preceding component’s vertical axis. If an
elbow does not end up in a locked position with the
precedingcomponent, attachwith aminimum oftwo (2)
sheet metal screws.

For Vertical Runs - The vent system must be supported
everyeight (8)feet (2.4m)above the fireplace flue outletby
wall brackets.
To install support brackets for vertical runs:
• Attach wall brackets to the vent pipe and secure the wall
bracket to the framing members with nails or screws.

4. Install Firestops
For Horizontal Runs - Firestops are REQUIRED on both
sidesof a combustible wall throughwhich thevent passes.
NOTE: Model SLK-01TRD does not need an exterior
firestop on an exterior combustible wall.
To install firestops for horizontal runs that pass through
either interior or exterior walls:
• Cuta 10-inchby 10-inch(254mm X254mm) holefor SL-
D series pipe.
NOTE: The center of the hole is one (1) inch (25.4mm)
above the center of the horizontal vent pipe.
• Position the firestops on both sides of the hole previ-
ously cut and secure the firestops with nails or screws.
• The heat shields of the firestops MUST BE placed to-
wards the top of the hole.
• Continuethe vent run through the firestops.

For Vertical Runs - One ceiling firestop is REQUIRED at
the hole in each ceiling through which the vent passes.
Toinstallfirestopsforverticalruns thatpassthroughceilings:
• Positiona plumb bob directly over the centerof the verti-
calvent component.
• Mark the ceiling to establish the centerpoint of the vent.
• Drill a hole or drive a nail through this centerpoint.
• Check the floor above for any obstructions, such as wir-
ing or plumbing runs.
• Reposition the fireplace and vent system, if necessary,
to accommodate the ceiling joists and/or obstructions.
• Cutan10-inchX10-inch(254mmX254mm) hole through
the ceiling, using the centerpoint previously marked.
• Framethe hole with framing lumberthe samesize as the
ceiling joists.

C. Vent Termination
For Horizontal Terminations - To attach and secure the
termination to the last section of horizontal vent:
• Rotateand interlock the ends asdescribed atthe begin-
ning of the Installing Vent Components section.
• Theterminationkit shouldpass through thewall firestops
fromthe exterior ofthe building.
• Adjustthe termination capto its final exterior positionon
the building.

For roundcap termination kits:
• Usethe exterior pipelockhole onthe round flangeof the
wall firestop to secure the vent pipe in place.

For Vertical Terminations - To locate the vent and install
the vent sections:
• Locate and mark the vent centerpoint on the underside
ofthe roof, anddrive a nail through thecenterpoint.
• Makethe outline ofthe roof hole around the centerpoint
nail.
• Thesizeoftheroofholeframingdimensionsdependonthe
pitchoftheroof.ThereMUST BEa1-inch(25.4mm)clear-
ancefromthe vertical ventpipeto combustible materials.
• Mark the roof hole accordingly.
• Coverthe opening ofthe installed ventpipes.
• Cut and frame the roof hole.
• Use framing lumber the same size as the roof rafters
and install the frame securely. Flashing anchored to the
frame must withstand heavy winds.
• Continue to install concentric vent sections up through
theroof hole andup past theroof line untilyou reach the
appropriatedistance abovethe roof.

To seal the roof hole, and to divert rain and snow from the
vent system:
• Attach a flashing to the roof using nails, and use a non-
hardening mastic around the edges of the flashing base
where it meets the roof.
• Attach a storm collar over the flashing joint to form a
water-tightseal. Place non-hardeningmastic around the
joint, between the storm collar and the vertical pipe.
• Slide the termination cap over the end of the vent pipe
and rotate the pipe clockwise 1/4 turn.
