These units MUST use one of the vent systems
described in the Installing the Fireplace section of
the Installers Guide.NO OTHER vent systems or
components MAY BE USED.
This gas fireplace and vent assembly MUST be
vented directly to the outside and MUST NEVER be
attached to a chimney serving a separate solid fuel
burning appliance. Each gas appliance MUST USE
a separate vent system. Common vent systems are
PROHIBITED.
INSPECT the external vent cap on a regular basis to
make sure that no debris is interfering with the air
flow.
The glass door assembly MUST be in place and
sealed, and the trim door assembly MUST be in
place on the fireplace before the unit can be placed
into safe operation.
DO NOT OPERATE this appliance with the glass
door removed, cracked, or broken. Replacement of
the glass door should be performed by a licensed
or qualified service person. DO NOT strike or slam
the glass door.
The glass door assembly SHALL ONLY be
replaced as a complete unit, as supplied by the gas
fireplace manufacturer. NO SUBSTITUTE material
may be used.
DO NOT USE abrasive cleaners on the glass door
assembly. DO NOT ATTEMPT to clean the glass
door when it is hot.
Turn off the gas before servicing this appliance. It is
recommended that a qualified service technician
perform an appliance check-up at the beginning of
each heating season.
Any safety screen or guard removed for servicing
must be replaced before operating this appliance.
DO NOT place furniture or any other combustible
household objects within 36 inches of the fireplace
front.
READ and UNDERSTAND all instructions carefully
before starting the installation. FAILURE TO
FOLLOW these installation instructions may result
in a possible fire hazard and will void the warranty.
Prior to the first firing of the fireplace, READ the

DO NOT USE this appliance if any part has been
under water. Immediately CALL a qualified service
technician to inspect the unit and to replace any part
of the control system and any gas control which has
been under water.
THIS UNIT IS NOT FOR USE WITH SOLID FUEL.
Installation and repair should be PERFORMED by a
qualified service person. The appliance and venting
system should be INSPECTED before initial use
and at least annually by a professional service
person. More frequent cleaning may be required
due to excessive lint from carpeting, bedding
material, etc. It is IMPERATIVE that the unit’s
control compartment, burners, and circulating air
passageways BE KEPT CLEAN to provide for
adequate combustion and ventilation air.
Always KEEP the appliance clear and free from
combustible materials, gasoline, and other
flammable vapors and liquids.
NEVER OBSTRUCT the flow of combustion and
ventilation air. Keep the front of the appliance
CLEAR of all obstacles and materials for servicing
and proper operations.
Due to the high temperature, the appliance should
be LOCATED out of traffic areas and away from
furniture and draperies. Clothing or flammable
material SHOULD NOT BE PLACED on or near the
appliance.
Children and adults should be ALERTED to the
hazards of high surface temperature and should
STAY AWAY to avoid burns or clothing ignition.

elevations from 0 to 2,000 feet in the U.S.A. and from 0 to
4,500feet in Canada.
When installing this fireplace at an elevation above 2,000
feet(in theUnited States),it may benecessary todecrease
the input rating by changing the existing burner orifice to a
smallersize. Input should be reducedfour percent(4%) for
each1,000feet above sealevel,unless the heatingvalueof
the gas has been reduced, in which case this general rule
will not apply. To identify the proper orifice size, check with
the local gas utility.
Wheninstallingthis fireplaceatan elevation between2,000
and4,500feet(inCanada),the inputratingmustbereduced
by ten percent (10%).
When installing this fireplace at an elevation above 4,500
feet (in Canada), check with local authorities.
Consult your local gas utility for assistance in determining

Getting Started
Introducing the Heat-N-Glo Gas Fireplaces
Heat-N-Glodirect ventgas fireplaces aredesigned tooper-
ate with all combustion air siphoned from outside of the
building and all exhaust gases expelled to the outside.
The information contained in this Installers Guide, unless
noted otherwise, applies to all models and gas control
systems.Gasfireplace diagrams,includingthe dimensions,
are shown in this section.
Pre-install Preparation
Thisgas fireplace and itscomponents are tested and safe
when installed in accordance with this Installers Guide.
Report to your dealer any parts damaged in shipment,
particularly the condition of the glass. Do not install any
unit with damaged, incomplete, or substitute parts.
The vent system components and trim doors are shipped
in separate packages. The gas logs are packaged
separately and must be field installed.
Read all of the instructions before starting the
installation. Follow these instructions carefully during
the installation to ensure maximum safety and benefit.
Failure to follow these instructions will void the
owner’s warranty and may present a fire hazard.
This model MUST use D-Series Direct Vent Compo-
nentsandTermination Kits (asindicated in this guide)
for exhausting flue gases ANDmodelAK-CFXAirKit
for combustion air. See venting section for details.
TheHeat-N-GloWarrantywill be voidedby,andHeat-N-Glo
disclaims any responsibility for, the following actions:
• Installation of any damaged fireplace or vent system
component.
• Modification of the fireplace or direct vent system.
• Installation other than as instructed by Heat-N-Glo.

This unit is designed to operate from a wall switch (see
wiring diagram on page 21) or a remote control. When
planningafireplace installation,it’snecessary todetermine:
•Where the unit is to be installed.
•The vent system configuration to be used.
•Gas supply piping.
•Electrical wiring.
•Framingand finishing details.
•Whether optional accessories—devices such as a re-
mote control, extrusion doors or arch doors —are de-
sired.
If the fireplace is to be installed on carpeting or tile, or on
any combustible material other than wood flooring, the
fireplace should be installed on a metal or wood panel that
extends the full width and depth of the fireplace.

Clearance Requirements
The top, back, and sides of the fireplace are defined by
stand-offs.The minimumclearance to a perpendicular wall
extendingpast the faceof thefireplace is oneinch (25mm).
The back of the fireplace may be recessed 19 1/4 inches
(489mm)into combustible construction.
Constructing the Chase
A chase is a vertical box-like structure built to enclose the
gas fireplace and/or its vent system. Vertical vents that run
on the outside of a building may be, but are not required to
be, installed inside a chase.
CAUTION: TREATMENT OF FIRESTOP SPACERS AND
CONSTRUCTIONOFTHE CHASEMAYVARYWITH THE
TYPE OF BUILDING. THESE INSTRUCTIONSARE NOT
SUBSTITUTES FOR THE REQUIREMENTS OF LOCAL
BUILDINGCODES. THEREFORE,YOUR LOCALBUILD-
ING CODES MUST BE CHECKED TO DETERMINE THE
REQUIREMENTS FOR THESE STEPS.
Factory-builtfireplace chasesshould be constructed inthe
manner of all outside walls of the home to prevent cold air
drafting problems. The chase should not break the outside
buildingenvelope inany manner.
Thismeans that thewalls, ceiling,base plateandcantilever
floorof the chaseshould beinsulated. Vapor and air infiltra-
tionbarriers shouldbeinstalled inthe chaseas per regional
codesfortherestof the home.Additionally,Heat-N-Glorec-
ommendsthattheinsidesurfacesbesheetrockedandtaped
for maximum air tightness.
Tofurther preventdrafts, thefirestops shouldbe caulkedto
seal gaps. Gas line holes and other openings should be
caulked or stuffed with insulation. If the unit is being in-
stalled on a cement slab, we recommend that a layer of
plywood be placed underneath to prevent conducting cold
up into the room.

A. Vent System Approvals
Thismodel is approved to useD-series directvent compo-
nents and terminations (Figures 4 and 5). Approved vent
systemcomponents arelabeled for identification.This pipe
is tested and listed as an approved component of the fire-
place.The pipe istested to be run inside an enclosed wall.
There is no requirement for inspection openings at each
jointwithin thewall.There isno requiredpitch for horizontal
vent runs. NOOTHER VENTINGSYSTEMS OR COMPO-
NENTS MAY BE USED.

Identifying Vent Components
The vent systems installed on this gas fireplace may in-
clude up to eight 90°elbow assemblies. The relationships
ofvertical rise to horizontal runin ventconfigurations using
90° elbows MUST BE strictly adhered to. The rise to run
relationshipsare shownin the ventingdrawings andtables.
Refer to the diagrams on the next several pages.
NOTE: Two 45° elbows may be used in place of one
90° elbow. Rise to run ratios in the vent system must
be followed if 45° elbows are used.

Thecombustion air for this fireplaceis supplied byAK-CFX
outside air kit. This kit may extend up to 40 feet from the
fireplaceto the inletcap (provided withAK-CFX).
It is RECOMMENDED that the inlet cap be installed on the
sameexterior wall asthe DVK-01TRDexhaust termination
captoensure they areinthe same pressurezone.Required

1. Attach the First Vent Component to the
Starting Collars
To attach the first vent component to the starting collars
ofthe fireplace:
• Apply a 3/8 inch (9.5mm) bead of stove cement around
the 5 inch (127mm) fireplace starting collar.
• Slide the first vent section onto the collars attached to
the top of the unit. Use four self tapping screws to se-
cure the outer pipe to the outer collar.
• When the internal beads of each pipe line up, rotate the
pipe section clockwise about one-quarter (1/4) turn. The
ventpipe is now locked together.

2. Continue Adding Vent Components
• Continueaddingventcomponents,lockingeachsucceed-
ing component into place.
• Ensurethat eachsucceeding vent component is secure-
ly fitted and locked into the preceding component in the
vent system.
• 90° elbows may be installed and rotated to any point
aroundthe precedingcomponent’s vertical axis. If anel-
bow does not end up in a locked position with the pre-
ceding component, attach with a minimum of two (2)
sheet metal screws.

3. Install Support Brackets
For Horizontal Runs - Theventsystemmust besupported
everyfive(5)feetofhorizontalrunbyahorizontalpipesupport.
To install support brackets for horizontal runs:
• Place the pipe supports around the vent pipe.
• Nail the pipe supports to the framing members.

wall brackets.
To install support brackets for vertical runs:
• Attach wall brackets to the vent pipe and secure the wall
bracket to the framing members with nails or screws.

• Position the firestops on both sides of the hole previ-
ously cut and secure the firestops with nails or screws.
• The heat shields of the firestops MUST BE placed to-
wards the top of the hole.

4. Install Firestops
For Horizontal Runs - Firestops are REQUIRED on both
sidesof a combustible wall throughwhich thevent passes.
NOTE: Model DVK-01TRD does not need an exterior
firestop on an exterior combustible wall.
To install firestops for horizontal runs that pass through
either interior or exterior walls:
• Cuta 12” x 12” (305mmx 305mm) holethrough thewall.
NOTE: The center of the hole is one (1) inch (25.4mm)
above the center of the horizontal vent pipe.
For Vertical Runs - One ceiling firestop is REQUIRED at
the hole in each ceiling through which the vent passes.
Toinstallfirestopsforverticalruns thatpassthroughceilings:
• Positiona plumb bob directly over the centerof the verti-
calvent component.
• Mark the ceiling to establish the centerpoint of the vent.
• Drill a hole or drive a nail through this centerpoint.
• Check the floor above for any obstructions, such as wir-

For Horizontal Terminations - Thetrapezoidal capDVK-
01TRD is the only cap that is approved to terminate a
horizontalvent run.
For Horizontal Terminations - To attach and secure the
termination to the last section of horizontal vent:

For Vertical Terminations - To locate the vent and install
the vent sections:
• Locate and mark the vent centerpoint on the underside
ofthe roof, anddrive a nail through thecenterpoint.

To seal the roof hole, and to divert rain and snow from the
vent system:
• Attach a flashing to the roof using nails, and use a non-
hardening mastic around the edges of the flashing base
where it meets the roof.
• Attach a storm collar over the flashing joint to form a
water-tightseal. Place non-hardeningmastic around the
joint, between the storm collar and the vertical pipe.
• Slide the termination cap over the end of the vent pipe
and rotate the pipe clockwise 1/4 turn.

A one-eighth (1/8) inch (3 mm) N.P.T. plugged tapping is
providedon the inlet and outletside of the gas controlfor a
test gauge connection to measure the manifold pressure.
The fireplace and its individual shut-off valve must be
disconnected from the gas supply piping system during
any pressure testing of the system at test pressures in
excess of one-half (1/2) psig (3.5 kPa).

• Locate the gas line access hole in the outer casing of
thefireplace.
• Insert the gas supply line through the gas line hole, and
connectit to theshut-off valve.
• When attaching the pipe, support the control so that the
lines are not bent or torn.
• After the gas line installation is complete, use a soap
solutionto carefully check all gasconnections for leaks.
NOTE: You must silicone around the pipe to close the
hole in the side of the fiberbox. (High temperature
3000F or 1490C minimum sealant).
WARNING: DO NOT USE AN OPEN FLAME
TO CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS.
• At the gas line access hole in the outer casing, use
insulation to re-pack the space around the gas pipe.
• Using a high temperature silicone seal area between
pipe and outer casing.
Step 6. The Gas Supply Line
NOTE: Have the gas supply line installed in accordance
with local building codes by a qualified installer
approved and/or licensed as required by the locality.
(In the state of Massachusetts installation must be
performed by a licensed plumber or gas fitter).
NOTE: Before the first firing of the fireplace, the gas
supply line should be purged of any trapped air.
NOTE: Consult local building codes to properly size
the gas supply line leading to the 1/2 inch
(13 mm) hook-up at the unit.
This gas fireplace is designed to accept a 1/2 inch
(13 mm) gas supply line. To install the gas supply line:
• Alisted (andState ofMassachusetts approved)1/2 inch
(13mm) tee-handle manual shut-off valve and a listed
flexible gas connector are connected to the 1/2 inch
(13mm) inlet of the control valve.NOTE: If substituting
for these components, please consult local codes for
compliance.
• A 1/8 inch (3 mm) N.P.T. plugged tapping, accessible
for test gauge connection, should be provided for in the
gas supply line leading to the unit’s shut-off valve.
• Removethe decorativedoor onthe unit byeither liftingit
up and away fromthe unit or if you have anARCH door,
pull away from the unit to release it from the clips on
each side.
• Remove the glass assembly. Using a phillips screws
driver,loosen thebottom three screws, unfasten thetop
three screws and remove the track while holding the
glass assembly in place. Tilt the glass away from the
unit and set aside. See Figure 23.
