SECTION 2: Planning
Thefollowingcodesandinstructionsshouldbefollowedwhen
planningtheinstallationofthisHEATSTARAGheater.Inadditionto
theseinstructions,thewarningsmustbecarefullyadheredtosince
improperinstallationmayleadtopropertydamage,injury,ordeath.
National Standards and Applicable
Codes
Gas Codes:
•Thetypeofgasappearingonthenameplatemustbethe
typeofgasused.Installationmustcomplywithlocalcodes
andrecommendationsofthelocalgascompany,andthe
NationalFuelGasCode,ANSIZ223.1–latestrevision,(same
asNFPABulletin54)(theNaturalGasandPropaneInstallation
Code,CSAB149.1)Canadaonly.
•Clearancebetweentheheateranditsventandadjacent
combustiblematerial(whichispartofthebuildingorits
contents)shallbemaintainedtoconformwiththeStandard
forInstallationofGasAppliancesandGasPiping,NFPA-54
/ANSIZ223.1–latestrevision,NationalFuelGasCode(the
NaturalGasandPropaneInstallationCode,CSAB149.1)

Hazardous Locations:
Wherethereisthepossibilityofexposuretocombustible
airbornematerialorvapor,consultthelocalFireMarshal,the
fireinsurancecarrierorotherauthoritiesforapprovalofthe
proposedinstallation.
Critical Considerations
ThisHEATSTARAGisasuspendedheater.Therefore,itsstability,
flexibility,andsafetyareveryimportant.Beforestartinginstallation,
besurethesystemcanmeetthefollowingrequirements.
• Maintainspecifiedclearancestocombustibles,andsafe
distancefromtheheat-sensitivematerial,equipmentand
workstations.
• Thestatedclearancestocombustiblesrepresentasurface
temperatureof90°F(30°C)aboveroomtemperature.Building
materialswithlowheattolerance(suchasplastic,vinyl
siding,canvas,etc.)maybesubjecttodegradationatlower
temperatures.Itistheinstallersresponsibilitytoassurethat
adjacentmaterialsareprotectedfromdegradation.
• Provideaccesstoburnersforservicing,preferableonboth
sides,aboveandbehindtheburnerforremoval.
• Alwaysobserveminimumclearancestocombustibleslocated
onpage4.
• Planlocationsupports(seeFigure2A-Bstartingonpage6).
• Theinstallationmustconformwithlocalbuildingcodesor
intheabsenceoflocalcodes,withtheNationalFuelGas
Code,ANSIZ223.1/NFPA54(theNaturalGasandPropane
InstallationCode,CSAB149.1)Canadaonly.
• Ifanexternalelectricalsourceisutilized,theheater,when
installed,mustbeelectricallygroundedinaccordancewith
theNationalElecticalCode,ANSI/NFPA70orcurrent
CanadianElectricalCode,CSAC22.1.
Installation Procedure
Takemaximumadvantageofthebuildingupperstructure,
beams,joists,purlins,etc.,fromwhichtosuspendtheheater.
Thereisnouniquesequenceforinstallationofthetubing.
On-siteobservationwillusuallyrevealalogicalsequence.
Begintheinstallationatthemostcriticaldimension.
Reflectorsandtubingcanbeinstalledasyoumovealong.
Carefullyadjustsystempitchateachpositiontolevelthe
heater.Pitchdownone-halfinchin20feet(awayfrom
burner).
DON’TPressuretestthegaslineusinghighpressure(greaterthan½
PSIG)withoutclosingthehigh-pressureshutoffcocks.Failure
todosowillresultindamagetotheburners.
DO Familiarizeyourselfwithlocalandnationalcodes.
Developaplannedprocedurewhichwillconservematerial
andlaboronthejob.
Checktoseethatallmaterialandequipmentisonthejob
beforestartinginstallation.
Allowforthermalexpansionofthetubes.
Installthegasconnectoronlyasshownininstructions(see
Figure14&15onpage10).
Haveslipjointswhererequiredbetweenreflectorstokeep
themfrombucklingorcomingapart.
Provide1sq.inchoffreeairopeningtoeach1,000BTU/hr.
ofheaterinput(butnotlessthan100sq.inches)inenclosed
spaces.Oneopeningshouldbewithin12inchesofthetop
andonewithin12inchesofthebottomoftheenclosure.
