Intended Use
INTENDED USE
The AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress is a therapeutic pressure
redistribution system comprised of foam-filled air cylinders that aid in the
prevention/treatment of pressure injuries in patients and residents with
up to moderate risk and/or Stage I and II pressure injuries when combined
with recommended turning protocols.
The AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress can support a patient weight up to
500 lb (227 kg). Refer to the bed manufacturer’s user manual for the bed
safe working load.
CONTRAINDICATION:
Contraindication—Use of active therapy surfaces for patients with
unstable spinal cord injury or in cervical or skeletal traction could cause
serious injury to the patient.
WARNING:
Warning—Some safety features of the bed may not function or may not
operate as intended with mattresses that are not designed specifically for
this bed. Check with the mattress manufacturer to make sure that the
safety features of the bed have been tested and verified to operate
correctly with the replacement mattress. Failure to do so could cause
serious personal injury or equipment damage.
NOTE:
Hill-Rom recommends the use of Hill-Rom mattresses that have been
designed and tested specifically for the bed. If you purchase a
replacement mattress from Hill-Rom or another manufacturer, make sure
that the safety features of the bed have been tested and verified to
operate correctly with the replacement mattress. The replacement
mattress should meet the applicable regulations and technical standards
to minimize the risk of injury to patients and caregivers.
Mattresses should—
• Minimize the gaps where entrapment could occur
• Allow enough siderail height from the top of the mattress to the
top of the siderail to prevent accidental roll-overs
• Have appropriate firmness to assist with safe patient transfers
• Not interfere with siderail operation

Introduction
INTRODUCTION
The AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress is a non-powered surface that uses
a system of intake and output valves to provide weight-based pressure
redistribution whenever a patient moves or is repositioned. It has a top
layer of visco-elastic foam for improved patient comfort.
The AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress with Airport can be operated in a
non-powered or powered mode. In the non-powered configuration, the
mattress uses a system of intake and output valves to provide pressure
redistribution whenever a patient moves or is repositioned. It has a top
layer of visco-elastic foam for improved patient comfort. In the powered
configuration, the AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress offers alternating
pressure therapy when connected to the CU2 control unit.
Many factors can contribute to skin breakdown in the healthcare facility
and home care environments. These can include, but are not limited to:
nutritional status, incontinence level, alertness, mobility, etc. The
AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattresses must be used properly and here are
some key items when using the mattresses:
• Make sure to use the AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress and the
AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress with Airport with the stenciled side
up and with the foot-end indicator placed at the foot end of the bed.
•TheAccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress and the AccuMax Quantum
VPC Mattress with Airport are mattress replacement systems.
• A chest X-ray can be performed while lying on the mattress.
• Follow local CPR procedures for non-powered surfaces when the
patient is on an AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress or an AccuMax
Quantum VPC Mattress with Airport.
• The mattresses are multi-zoned and layered with varying Indentation
Load Deflections (ILD) and densities.
• The mattresses provide uninterrupted pressure redistribution
through a series of interconnected air sectors along with Controlled
Release Technology System.
• No blower box, pump, or power is required, but additional alternating
pressure therapy is offered when the AccuMax Quantum VPC
Mattress with Airport is connected to the optional CU2 control unit.
• There is no interruption of pressure redistribution capabilities in the
event of facility power failure.
• The mattresses have a patented Heel Pillow with heel slope (flat deck
and CareAssist Bed mattresses only).

8AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress and Accumax Quantum VPC Mattress with Airport
Instructions for Use(174152 REV 10)
Introduction
• The CU2 unit offers on-demand alternating pressure therapy
(optional for AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress with Airport).
• The mattresses accommodate patient weight up to 500 lb (227 kg).
HOW IT WORKS
Through a series of air sectors along with our innovative Controlled
Release Technology intake and output valves, the AccuMax Quantum
VPC Mattress and the AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress with Airport
automatically begin to create a custom pressure redistribution profile
immediately after a patient is placed upon the system.
The AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress and AccuMax Quantum VPC
Mattress with Airport have the ability to reconfigure and reinflate any
time the patient moves or is repositioned. Whenever the pressure
gradient changes, the intake and output valves automatically adjust the
sectors to again achieve a low pressure balance providing therapy for your
patient. The unique Controlled Release Valve System of the mattresses
allow for these pressure changes to occur very slowly.
The AccuMax Quantum VPC Mattress with Airport allows for alternating
pressure therapy when connected to the CU2 control unit. This provides a
cycle of loading and off-loading pressure by alternating the inflation and
deflation of the air bladders.
The CU2 unit also offers:
• Max Inflate for patient repositioning.
• Soft/firm comfort controls.
• Low pressure warning in case the control unit malfunctions or
there is a bad airport connection to the hose.
