The information in this User's Guide covers the Ready-to-Fly, Receiver-Ready and Kit versions of the
Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer. Depending on which version you have, some information may not be pertinent;
however, we recommend reading through this entire User's Guide prior to beginning assembly, regardless of which
version you have. This will help you become familiar with your new model, regardless of which version you have.
It’s very important that you read through all of the information included with your Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer
and fully understand not only how to operate your model, but also to fully understand the responsibility you
have for its proper use - both for your safety and the safety of others.
The Hobby People Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer is a 250-class racing drone, designed for extreme maneuverability and
high speeds. Designed for 4S LiPo power, it comes complete with a carbon fiber frame with integrated power distribution,
lightweight, but strong composite outrigger arms with high-performance brushless outrunner motors with matched
5030 props, and an aerodynamic nose cone and body fairings. The Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer is ready for all-out
competition racing, out of the box!
Add to the great features described above - a CC3D Flight Controller, high-intensity LED headlight and tail lights with
remote color switching (RTF version only), a 5.8GHz FPV system with 1000TVL color HD camera and 7” TFT color LCD
FPV Receiver Monitor, the Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer will provide FPV racing fun like you’ve never experienced before!
Available in Ready-to-Fly, Receiver-Ready and Kit versions, there’s a Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer version for everyone!

otherwise, the user is responsible for any charges for the repair or replacement of the equipment in question. This
warranty does not cover cosmetic damage, nor does it cover damage caused by misuse, modification, negligence,
abuse, improper connections, acts of God or damage caused by alterations by unauthorized persons. This warranty
only applies to the original purchaser and requires proof of purchase to redeem.
Hobby People shall not be liable for any damage resulting from the use of this product. As Hobby People has no
control over the use, setup, modification or misuse of this product, no liability shall be assumed nor accepted for any
resulting damage or injury. By the act of using this product, the user accepts all resulting liability.
Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, or allow limitations on
how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitations may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific
legal rights, and you may have other rights which vary from state to state.
Crash damage and damage caused by improper use, misuse or other mishandling of your Batfly 250
FPV Quad Racer is your sole responsibility and will not be covered under warranty. Propeller damage caused by
improper use, misuse or other mishandling (e.g. rough landings, contacting objects, etc.) is your sole responsibility
and will not be covered under warranty.

using a still or video camera (if applicable).

We recommend using a 4S LiPo flight battery for the best performance, although a 3S LiPo
battery can be used, but the Quad Racer will not fly as fast or perform as well. The flight battery dimensions
should not exceed 102 (L) x 35.5 (W) x 22mm (H).
The Receiver-Ready and Kit versions require a 5-channel or more transmitter and
matching receiver. Using a 5-channel transmitter and receiver will allow you change Flight Modes during flight.
Ideally, the receiver should be small and lightweight, and have horizontal pins and a single antenna for ease of
installation, although a receiver with vertical pins and dual antennas can be used.
The FPV Receiver Monitor is designed to be powered by a 3S 1500 to
2200mAH LiPo battery with an XH balance connector. To ensure compatibility, the LiPo battery you choose should
feature an XH balance connector to match the FPV Receiver Monitor Power Input Connector.
The Kit version can be assembled with or without FPV equipment. This is ideal for those users
that might want to fly and race the Batfly 250 Quad Racer, but don’t want an FPV version. However, if you want to
install FPV equipment in the Kit version, we strongly recommend purchasing and installing the same replacement
FPV equipment used in the Ready-to-Fly and Receiver-Ready versions to ensure plug and play compatibility.
* For extra precaution, we suggest using a programmable LiPo Battery Voltage Alarm that can be mounted on the Quad
Racer, which allows you to program the alarm to sound at a higher cutoff voltage value to give you more time to safely land
before the battery voltage drops too low and results in a crash.
**The FindIt! Locater plugs into the Quad Racer and can emit an audible alert to help you find your Quad Racer should it be lost.

Do not attempt to fly the Quad Racer if one or more of the propellers are damaged. Flying with damaged
propellers is not safe and can make the Quad Racer fly uncontrollably or cause bad vibrations that can
damage your Quad Racer. Check the propellers prior to each flight. If a propeller appears damaged in any way, it
should be replaced.
wARnInGS AnD SAFETY noTES
• The Quad Racer should never be flown in rain, sand, mud, snow or dirt. The Quad Racer is manufactured with
delicate components that must be kept dry and free of debris to ensure the best flight performance. Exposure to
moisture or excessive heat can result in damage that will not be covered under warranty.
• Just because the Quad Racer is powered by electric motors doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t exercise caution
when flying and operating it. The Quad Racer can be very dangerous and cause bodily injury if you do not fly it in
a safe manner or do not pay close attention while flying it. You alone are responsible for its actions during flight.
• The Quad Racer features three different Flight Modes - Beginner, Normal and Sport. We strongly suggest that when
you first begin flying the Quad Racer that you use the Beginner Flight Mode and perform only basic maneuvers until
you are more familiar with its flight characteristics. In addition, we don’t recommend using the FPV system until
after you’ve flown the Quad Racer a couple of times. This will allow you to learn the steps required for flight and
allow you to become familiar with the Quad Racer’s flight characteristics before using this feature.
• Always unplug your LiPo battery from the Quad Racer and from the FPV Receiver Monitor (if applicable) after use.
• Always fly the Quad Racer in a suitably large area free of obstructions. Remember, the Quad Racer is very fast
and reacts to control inputs very quickly, so you must always be paying careful attention when flying it.
GEnERAL wARnInGS (ALL VERSIonS)
• The radio system operates on the 2.4GHz frequency band. The 2.4GHz connection is determined by the transmitter
and receiver pair. Unlike ordinary crystal-based systems, the Quad Racer can be flown without frequency control.
• Always turn the transmitter ON before plugging your LiPo battery into the Quad Racer and always unplug your
LiPo battery from the Quad Racer before turning the transmitter OFF.
• Because the Quad Racer is operated by radio control, it’s important to make sure you are always using fresh
transmitter batteries. Never allow the transmitter batteries to run low or you might experience loss of control.
• Do not expose the transmitter to moisture or excessive heat and never attempt to disassemble or modify any of
the radio control system components.
• Do not cover the transmitter antenna (top of transmitter) in any way during use! Doing so can block the RF signal,
resulting in loss of control of your Quad Racer.
• During use, hold the transmitter so that its orientated as close to vertical as possible at all times. This provides
the best RF signal between the transmitter and the receiver inside the Quad Racer. Try not to ‘follow’ the Quad
Racer with the transmitter, as this can result in a weakened RF signal.
• Prior to each flight you should double-check that the flight controls are functioning normally (motors turn ON and
react to control inputs). Prior to the first flight of the day or after a bad crash, check the controls from approximately
30 paces away from the Quad Racer, to ensure the radio control system is functioning properly.
• The receiver antenna wire consists of a coaxial cable (black portion) and a reception wire (silver portion). The
coaxial cable (black portion) can be bent into gentle curves; however, do not bend the coaxial cable acutely, or
repeatedly bend it, or the antenna core can be damaged. Do not bend the reception wire. Reception performance
decreases if the reception wire is bent.
• The receiver antenna wire is delicate, therefore, handle it with care. Do not pull on the receiver antenna wire with
force. Do not cut or extend the receiver antenna wire.
• If the transmitter becomes soiled, it can be cleaned using a damp cloth. Do not use any solvents to clean it.
RADIo ConTRoL SYSTEm wARnInGS (READY-To-FLY) VERSIon
These warnings and safety notes are important and must be followed closely. Please abide by this information and
follow the instructions in this User’s Guide to ensure maximum safety. It’s important that you fully understand not only
how to operate your Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer, but also to fully understand the responsibility you have for its proper
use - both for your safety and the safety of others.
PRoPELLER SAFETY (ALL VERSIonS)
Your Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer’s propellers are thin and very sharp. Although they are somewhat flexible to prevent
damage during minor mishaps, they can still be very dangerous.
Be careful! Do not allow your fingers, hands or other body parts to come into contact with the spinning
propeller blades or serious injury will result!

wARnInGS AnD SAFETY noTES
To ensure your safety, please read and carefully follow the guidelines in this section and any safety information
included with your LiPo battery. It’s important that you follow these warnings closely. LiPo batteries are significantly
more volatile than Alkaline or NiCd and NiMH batteries.
The LiPo battery must be charged with a LiPo balancing charger or fire will result. Do not use or charge your LiPo
battery unattended.
All energy storage devices are dangerous. They contain stored (potential) energy, which if mishandled, will cause
failure, and in some cases that failure can be very dangerous. Avoid all conditions that cause battery failure. These
conditions include, but are not limited to:
- Anything over 160ºF can limit the battery’s life. If heated to extremes (with fire, a soldering iron, etc.),
the battery may fail and/or explode!
- Examples of severe damage would be: breaking the battery or putting a hole in the battery.
- The charger is either the wrong type or it simply fails and puts more energy at a higher voltage than
the battery is designed to handle. LiPo batteries must never be charged above 4.2v per cell.
- This usually comes from an improper ESC that allows the voltage to go well under 3.0v per cell.
Also, this term is sometimes used to mean exceeding “C” discharge rating. If the battery is rated for 64 amps
continuous discharge, do not discharge it at a continuous rate of 70 amps! This will destroy the battery.
If you cause or observe any of the conditions listed above, you can experience battery failure, so if any of these things
do happen, be prepared that the battery could fail.
- Swelling is caused by internal pressure that goes beyond the normal amount of pressure
in every battery. This pressure makes the cell swell up like a balloon. Do not use a swelled battery! A swelled battery
is a battery that has failed and needs to be discarded before explosion or fire results. Here is what to do with a
battery that is on the verge of exploding or is starting to show signs of exploding:
- The material spitting out (if it comes to that) is spitting out at as much as 2000ºF.
- We recommend always charging your LiPo battery using a LiPo safety bag (available
separately). If you don’t use a LiPo safety bag, we recommend a fire-proof container with a lid be kept near the
proximity of any battery being used or charged. Fill the bottom with sand. Have this ready to use at a moment’s
notice. If the battery looks suspicious, put it in the container and drop another large amount of sand on top, then
drop the lid. Let it burn out. It will smoke and fume, but the sand will contain the sparks and reduce the transfer
of heat. A fire extinguisher will help, but it will not stop the chemical reaction. The only thing that can be done is
to contain the fire until the fire goes out.
While there are precautions that must be taken and dangers that must be considered, LiPo batteries today are very
safe and very easy to use. Here is a list of practical advice for using this type of battery.
- Do not solder directly to the battery!
- Always use a LiPo balance charger. Always make sure the settings on the charger match the battery
(voltage and amperage) and that the polarity is correct! Never charge if the battery is hot (over ambient temperature
or 105ºF). Let it cool first!
- We suggest a fireproof container for storing any rechargeable batteries. LiPo batteries in storage for an
extended period of time should be stored at 60 percent of their capacity. If storing for only a short time, then leaving
them with a full charge is fine. Never store them in a discharged state! Do not store the battery in high-heat
conditions. 60º to 72ºF is acceptable.
- Damaged battery’s must be discarded immediately. We suggest removing the insulation from
around the battery, then submerging the battery in a bowl of saltwater for 24 to 36 hours. This will completely
discharge the battery. Cut off the wires, place the battery in a sealed bag, then discard it in the trash.

TRAnSmITTER oVERVIEw
AUDIBLE Low VoLTAGE ALARm (READY-To-FLY) VERSIon
The transmitter features a Low Voltage Alarm. When the transmitter battery voltage drops below a safe value, the
Power/Bind LED will flash and an audible alarm will sound. When this occurs, land as soon as is safely possible and
replace the transmitter batteries with new fresh batteries.
This section is specific to the Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer Ready-to-Fly version that includes the transmitter and
receiver. If you have the Receiver-Ready or Kit version, you can skip this section.
Use the photo and descriptions in this section to familiarize yourself with the features and general use of the transmitter
included with your Quad Racer. The transmitter comes paired and programmed from the factory to work with your
Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer. Read this section to familiarize yourself with the transmitter’s functions.
If it’s ever necessary to pair the transmitter and receiver again, see the Binding the Transmitter and Receiver
section on page 20.

AUDIBLE TRIm SwITCh TonES (READY-To-FLY) VERSIon
When the transmitter is turned ON and you press a trim switch, a short audible tone is heard. When a Trim Switch
is centered, a longer audible tone will sound.
- Transmits the RF signal from the transmitter to the receiver inside the Quad Racer.
- Houses the eight ‘AA’ Alkaline cells that power the transmitter.
- Used to change Flight Modes. Choose from Beginner Mode, Normal Mode and Sport Mode.
- Used to remotely turn the LED head light and tail light ON and OFF, and change the color of the
tail light. You’re able to select one of seven different colors.
- Turns the transmitter ON and OFF.
- Controls the Quad Racer’s Forward/Backward (Pitch) and Right/Left (Roll) flight axes.
- Used to make fine-tuned adjustments to the pitch axis to level the Quad Racer during flight.
- Indicates the current status of the transmitter.
- Used to make fine-tuned adjustments to the roll axis to level the Quad Racer during flight.
- Controls the Quad Racer’s Throttle (Power Up/Down) and Yaw (Spin Right/Left) flight axes.
- Used to make fine-tuned adjustments to the throttle axis to keep the motors from turning ON
when the throttle control stick is pulled all the way back.
- Used to make fine-tuned adjustments to the yaw axis to keep the Quad Racer from spinning right
or left during flight.

- This Port is used to plug the optional Hobby People Find It! Locator. Featuring lights and sound,
the Find It! Locator is used to help you find your Quad Racer should it be lost during flight.
- The Flexi Port is configurable and provides either I2C connectivity or a second serial Port.
- The Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer features a 1000TVL color HD camera connected to the FPV system,
providing you a high-quality First Person View during flight.

- Used to connect the Flight Controller to your PC or laptop to change programming or update firmware.
- Used to plug in the LiPo flight battery. This is an XT60 style connector, which features gold-plated
connectors for minimal current loss.
- Receives and processes the signals from the transmitter to control the Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer. The
Ready-to-Fly version includes a lightweight 6-channel micro receiver.
- Receives the RF signal from the transmitter. The receiver antenna should be left extended as
straight as possible. Don’t repeatedly bend or kink the antenna, or you could damage it.
- Connects the receiver wire harness to the Flight Controller to control the Batfly 250 FPV Quad
Racer’s various functions.
- Connects the remote LED switch wiring in the Ready-to-Fly version to control remote LED
switching. This Port has no function in the Receiver-Ready or Kit versions.

This section details the final assembly of your Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer. Because not all sections are pertinent to
all versions, follow the sections that pertain to your version as described in the section header - either All Versions, Kit
Version, Receiver-Ready Version or Ready-to-Fly Version. Sections that don't pertain to your version can be skipped.
InSTALLInG ThE FPV CAmERA AnD VIDEo TRAnSmITTER (kIT VERSIon)
This section describes installing the FPV camera and 5.8GHz video transmitter. To ensure compatibility, we recommend
using the Hobby People 1000TVL Color HD FPV Camera (P/N 116259) and the Hobby People 5.8GHz FPV Video
Transmitter (P/N 116258). These parts are designed for plug-and-play installation without need for modification.
If you’re using different FPV equipment, the details in this section may differ and/or you may need to modify the
Quad Racer’s frame to accommodate your equipment.
1) Carefully remove the external camera mount and the four vibration isolators
from the top plate.
2) Using a 2.0mm hex wrench, unscrew the ten M2.5 x 5mm socket-cap screws
that hold the top plate in place, then remove the top plate.
3) Plug one end of the power cable (red/black) into the FPV Video Transmitter,
then mount the FPV Video Transmitter to the underside of the top plate.

2) Plug the five connectors from the wire harness into the Channel Ports in your receiver as shown in the diagram
below. The Black (Aux 2) is not used in this application. If necessary, refer to your radio system User’s Guide for
more information.

1) Secure the nose cone and the two body fairings to the main frame, using
the six M2.5 x 5mm machine screws included.
moUnTInG YoUR RECEIVER (kIT AnD RECEIVER-READY VERSIonS)
1) Carefully plug the Receiver Wire Harness into the Receiver Input Port on
the Flight Controller.
The Receiver Wire Harness will plug in only one way. Do NOT force
it or you can damage the pins in the Receiver Input Port! The black,
red and white set of wires should be toward the FRONT of the Quad Racer.
The UP/DOWN angle of the FPV Camera can be adjusted by firmly moving the top of the camera forward or aft.
4) Plug one end of the video cable (red/black/yellow) into the FPV Camera,
then slide the tabs in the bottom of the FPV Camera mount into the matching
notches in the lower mounting plate.
5) Plug the other end of the video cable into the FPV Video Transmitter, then
plug the Power Connector into the FPV Video Transmitter Power Port on
the bottom plate (see the photo on page 8 for correct location).
6) Reinstall the top plate, followed by the external camera mount and the four
vibration isolators

PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) output signal to the CC3D Flight Controller. The CC3D Flight Controller also supports
S.Bus and DSM2/DSMX receivers. If you’re using this type of receiver and you’re not familiar with making the
proper connections and programming the CC3D Flight Controller, please refer to the CC3D Flight Controller Wiki
at www.openpilot.org or refer to your receiver or radio system User’s Guide

Use the top view photo on page 8 to determine what motor to install each propeller on, either clockwise rotation
(‘5030R’) or counter-clockwise rotation (‘5030’). The names ‘5030’ and ‘5030R’ are molded into the top of each
propeller to differentiate them.
As a safety feature, your Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer features self-locking spinner nuts. The spinner nuts
installed on the clockwise rotation motors are reverse thread.
InSTALLInG ThE PRoPELLERS (ALL VERSIonS)
1) Working with one motor at a time, unscrew the spinner nut from the
motor shaft, then install the propeller (either ‘5030’ or ‘5030R’) depending
on the motor direction of rotation.
2) Thread the spinner nut onto the motor shaft and tighten it using the carbon
fiber wrench included.

3) Mount your receiver to the top plate, using a piece of double-side foam
tape (not included). Alternately, if your receiver is small enough and features
horizontal Channel Port Pins, it can be mounted on top of the Flight Controller.
Refer to your radio system or receiver User’s Guide for information
about routing your receiver antenna wire (or wires). Be sure that you
secure the antenna wire (or wires) securely so they can’t come loose and
get caught up in the propellers.
The transmitter you choose should be a 5-channel or more computer radio. Create a new
standard aircraft model (normal wing, normal tail, one aileron servo, etc.) and ensure all
programming values are set to their default values to start. Trim and sub-trim should be
zero, all mixing controls should be turned off, throttle hold should be disabled, all channel
high and low EPAs should be set to -100% to +100% (or both 100%, depending on transmitter brand) and throttle
servo reversing values should be set as shown in the table.
Follow the information in this section to install the transmitter batteries (Ready-to-Fly version) and fully charge and
install your LiPo flight battery.
InSTALLInG ThE TRAnSmITTER BATTERIES (READY-To-FLY VERSIon)
1) Remove the battery cover and pull out the battery holder from the back of
the transmitter.
2) Install 8 new ‘AA’ alkaline batteries into the battery holder, double-checking
to make sure that the polarity is correct, then reinstall the battery holder
and the battery cover.
We don’t recommend setting up or using the FPV system yet. Information about using the FPV system,
switching Flight Modes and using the LED light system will be covered later in this User’s Guide. It’s important that
you first learn to set up and fly your new Quad Racer without worrying about using these more advanced features.
Prior to your first flight, you should use the OpenPilot GCS CC3D Flight Controller software
Configuration > Input menu to check your transmitter’s control stick output to ensure the controls are working
properly (you many need to reverse flight controls) and to assign Flight Modes to the switch or dial on your transmitter
you’ve designated to use for remote Flight Mode Switching. For more information, see the Using the OpenFlight
CC3D Flight Controller Software section on pages 20 and 21, and the Using Flight Modes section on page 16.

Your Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer is now ready for flight. Follow the steps in this section to calibrate the gyros and
initialize the Flight Controller, then arm the motors and fly your Quad Racer using the Beginner Flight Mode.
We strongly recommend flying your Quad Racer in the Beginner Flight Mode for at least the first few flights
before attempting to use any other Flight Mode. This will allow you to become familiar with the Quad Racer’s
flight characteristics.
For more
information, see the Using Flight Modes section on page 16.
If you have the Kit or Receiver-Ready versions and you’re using your own transmitter and receiver and you are
unable to arm the motors or if the flight controls do not operate as expected, the Flight Controller may not be
getting a low throttle signal or the flight controls are reversed. You can use the OpenFlight CC3D Flight Controller
software Configuration > Input menu to check your transmitter control stick output and make adjustments as necessary.
For more information, see the Using the OpenFlight CC3D Flight Controller Software section on pages 20 and 21.

2) Place the Quad Racer right-side up on a flat, level surface, then plug your
LiPo battery into the Power Connector. The Condition LED will flash Blue
rapidly while a series of audible tones sound.
When the Flight Controller is initialized, the Condition LED
will flash Blue slowly.
If after 10 seconds, the Condition LED is still flashing rapidly or not
flashing at all, unplug your LiPo battery and restart the calibration
process again, making sure the Quad Racer is on a flat, level surface.

If you don’t push the throttle control stick forward within 30 seconds, or if you’re flying and pull the throttle
control stick all the way back to turn the motors OFF after landing, you will need to re-arm the motors again
if you don’t push the throttle forward again within 30 seconds.

ARmInG ThE moToRS (ALL VERSIonS)
Before the throttle will operate, the motors must be armed. Before arming the motors and flying your Quad Racer,
make sure that you’ve completed the following steps:
• Fully charge and install your LiPo flight battery, turn the transmitter ON and make sure that the throttle control stick
is pulled all the way back and that the Flight Mode Dial (or the switch on your transmitter) is in the Beginner
Flight Mode position.
• Set the Quad Racer on a flat level surface, plug in your LiPo battery and allow the gyros to calibrate and the Flight
Controller to initialize. This takes approximately 10 seconds. The Condition LED will flash Blue slowly.
1) Pull the left control stick and the right control stick to the lower left and
lower right corners and HOLD them in those positions for 3 seconds, then
release the control sticks. The motors are now armed.
2) Within 30 seconds, push the throttle control stick forward to turn the
motors ON.
PRoPELLER SAFETY (ALL VERSIonS)
Do not attempt to fly the Quad Racer if one or more of the propellers are damaged. Flying with damaged
propellers is not safe and can make the Quad Racer fly uncontrollably or cause bad vibrations that can
damage your Quad Racer. Check the propellers prior to each flight. If a propeller appears damaged in any way, it
should be replaced.
Your Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer’s propellers are thin and very sharp. Although they are somewhat flexible to prevent
damage during minor mishaps, they can still be very dangerous.
Be careful! Do not allow your fingers, hands or other body parts to come into contact with the spinning
propeller blades or serious injury will result!
This section details how to control your Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer. Each diagram displays what the Quad Racer will
do when a control stick is moved either up or down, or right or left.

FLYInG TIPS (ALL VERSIonS)
Your Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer is a powerful, high-performance racing drone and you must use caution at
all times when flying it. In this section we’ve provided some basic flying tips to help you get started.
• If at any time during flight you begin to lose control of the Quad Racer and are unable to regain control before
crashing into something or someone, pull the left control stick (throttle) all the way back to shut the Quad Racer
down and allow it to crash land on its own.
• Always fly the Quad Racer in a suitably large area free of obstructions. Flying in strong or gusty winds can make
the Quad Racer more difficult to control and should not be attempted until you are a proficient flier.
• When moving the control sticks, use only small, smooth control inputs. Using large, abrupt control inputs can
cause you to over-control, making the Quad Racer more difficult to fly and possibly result in a crash.
• In general the Quad Racer’s controls do not need to be re-corrected as helicopters do, so control inputs should
be given and the control sticks returned to center before the next control input.
• When the front of the Quad Racer is facing toward you, the right and left roll and yaw controls will seem reversed.
Imagining yourself sitting in the “cockpit” will help you get used to this.
• Always try to keep the Quad Racer at least 3 feet off the ground during flight to keep it out of the ground effect.
Flying within the ground effect (less than 3 feet off the ground) will make the Quad Racer more difficult to fly.
FLYInG BASICS (ALL VERSIonS)
When learning to fly, we suggest always trying to keep the Quad Racer about 3 feet off the ground and in a relatively
small flying area. To be successful when learning, make small control inputs. Over-controlling is a mistake all new
pilots make. Never move the control sticks more than halfway except the throttle, and only when necessary.
You should have completed the following steps prior to flight:
• Fully charge and install your LiPo flight battery.
• Pull the left control stick all the way back and turn the transmitter ON. Verify that the Flight Mode Dial (or the
switch on your transmitter) is in the Beginner Flight Mode position.
• Plug your LiPo battery in and allow the gyros to calibrate and the Flight Controller to initialize. This takes
approximately 10 seconds. The Condition LED will flash Blue slowly.
• Arm the motors.
1) With the front of the Quad Racer facing away from you, slowly push the throttle forward until the propellers begin
to spin. Continue to push the throttle forward to increase the speed of the motors and take off.
2) Gently move the right control stick as required in small increments to keep the Quad Racer hovering in the same
general area about 3 feet off the ground. At the same time you will need to increase or decrease the throttle to
keep the Quad Racer hovering a consistent distance off the ground.
As you take off, it’s normal for the Quad Racer to drift backward until you climb higher out of the ground
effect. To counter-act this, gently push the right control stick forward.
3) While making small adjustments to the throttle to keep the Quad Racer hovering in the same general area about 3
feet off the ground, gently move the right control stick to the right and left and see how the Quad Racer banks and
moves to the right and left, then slowly move the right control stick forward and backward and see how the
Quad Racer banks and moves forward and backward. Remember, make gentle, small control inputs. Now gently
move the left control stick to the right and left and see how the Quad Racer spins around its vertical axis right and left.
4) Repeat moving the right and left control sticks slowly to the left and right, and forward and backward to get used
to how the Quad Racer moves, all while at the same time making small adjustments to the throttle to keep the
Quad Racer hovering about 3 feet off the ground.
5) Now try placing the Quad Racer in a stable hover and release the control sticks. The Quad Racer should stay in
the same general position on its own.
If the Quad Racer is continually moving one direction or the other when the control sticks are centered, and
it’s not caused by a constant cross-wind, the Quad Racer may require flight trimming. For more information,
see the Flight Trimming section on the next page.

First, practice hovering in a small space, using small control inputs to keep the Quad Racer in one place (Fig. 1). Next,
practice flying a square or rectangular pattern (Fig. 2), then practice flying in a figure-8 pattern (Fig. 3). After getting
better at flying these patterns, practice flying different patterns, spinning the Quad Racer 360º and changing the
position at which you stand relative to the front of the Quad Racer (Fig. 4).
Once you become comfortable with the basics, start practicing the different patterns described below to help you
increase your skills and confidence flying the Quad Racer.
FLYInG BASICS (ALL VERSIonS), ConTInUED....

FLIGhT TRImmInG (ALL VERSIonS)
In general, the Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer should require very little to no flight trimming. If you feel the Quad Racer
requires flight trimming that is not caused by a continuous cross-wind, do the following first:
A) If you have the Ready-to-Fly version, connect the Quad Racer to your PC or laptop and use the OpenPilot GCS
CC3D Flight Controller software Configuration > Input menu to ensure the flight controls are centered. The sliders
should be lined up with the red dots. If they’re not, adjust the Trim Switches until they are. If you have the Kit or
Receiver-Ready version, center the Trim Switches on your transmitter. Re-arm the motors and continue flying.
B) Land and unplug the LiPo battery. Set the Quad Racer on a flat level surface, then plug the LiPo battery in and
allow the gyros to calibrate and the Flight Controller to initialize again. Re-arm the motors and continue flying.
If you still feel that the Quad Racer requires flight trimming, adjust the Trim Switches as described below.
We suggest flight trimming the Quad Racer while hovering no less than 3 feet off the ground.
Flying any lower will make it more difficult to trim the Quad Racer due to the ground effect caused by the
spinning propellers. We also suggest flight trimming in a calm environment (little to no wind).
1) Push the throttle forward to take off and place the Quad Racer in a stable hover, about 3 feet off the ground. Release
both control sticks and watch how the Quad Racer reacts, then trim the Quad Racer as described in the diagrams.
The Throttle Trim Switch should be left centered at all times. In addition, if for any reason the motors
will not arm after you’ve adjusted the Trim Switches, center the Trim Switches on the transmitter.

• Choose the number that matches how many positions your Flight Mode switch has. If you’re
using a 2-position toggle switch, choose 2, if you’re using a 3-position toggle switch or a dial knob, choose 3.
• Select the desired Flight Mode you want to assign to each switch position, either Pos 1, Pos 2
and/or Pos 3.
Stabilized 1 = Beginner Flight Mode
Stabilized 2 = Normal Flight Mode
Stabilized 3 = Sport Flight Mode
1) After making your programming changes, move your Flight Mode Switch or rotate your Flight Mode Dial to switch
between Flight Modes.
When you switch Flight Modes, the Flight Controller Condition LED will flash rapidly for a couple of seconds,
indicating a Flight Mode change.
When you switch Flight Modes, the Flight Controller Condition
LED will flash Blue rapidly for a couple of seconds, indicating
a Flight Mode change.
USInG FLIGhT moDES
The Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer features three different Flight Modes that you can switch between during flight to
change the way the Quad Racer reacts to control inputs. If you have the Ready-to-Fly version, you can switch between
the three Flight Modes using the Flight Mode Dial.
If you have the Receiver-Ready or Kit version and are using your own transmitter and receiver, you can program the
CC3D Flight Controller to assign each of the Flight Modes to the various switch positions of the 2- or 3-position switch
or dial that you’ve designated to control Flight Mode switching. The following Flight Modes are available:
• This mode is recommended for beginners and for those more experienced pilots who are
becoming familiar with the Quad Racer’s flight characteristics. When using the Beginner Flight Mode, the flight
controls are de-sensitized, making the Quad Racer more docile and easier to fly.
• This mode is recommended for intermediate to experienced pilots and is used for most general
flying. When using the Normal Flight Mode, the flight controls are more sensitive, making the Quad Racer more
sensitive to control inputs and more agile during flight.
• This mode is recommended only for the most experienced pilots and should only be used when
extreme control response is desired, such as for rolls and other aerobatics. When using the Sport Flight Mode,
the flight controls are extremely sensitive, making the Quad Racer very sensitive and reactive to control inputs.
In the Sport Flight Mode, the Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer is extremely sensitive to control inputs, which
can result in a crash if you’re not careful.
ChAnGInG FLIGhT moDES (READY-To-FLY VERSIon)
1) Rotate the Flight Mode Dial left and right to switch between Flight Modes.

The Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer features a high-intensity LED headlight and tail lights with remote color switching.
This allows you to turn the LED lights ON and OFF and change the color of the LED tail light during flight (Ready-to-Fly
version only). If you have the Receiver-Ready or Kit version, remote color switching is not supported; however, you
can turn the LED lights ON and OFF and switch the color of the LED tail light manually, using the LED ON/OFF Switch.
ConTRoLLInG ThE LED LIGhTS (READY-To-FLY VERSIon)
1) Verify that the LED ON/OFF switch is in the OFF position.
The LED ON/OFF switch must be in the OFF position for remote color
switching to function.
ConTRoLLInG ThE LED LIGhTS (RECEIVER-READY AnD kIT VERSIonS)
If you have the Receiver-Ready or Kit version, remote LED color switching is not supported; however, you can still
select the desired Color Mode manually.
1) Move the LED ON/OFF switch into the ON position. The LED lights will turn
ON. To select one of seven different tail light colors, cycle the LED ON/OFF
switch between OFF and ON, then leave in the ON position.
USInG ThE FPV SYSTEm
The Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer features a 1000TVL color HD camera with 5.8GHz Video Transmitter (Ready-to-Fly
and Receiver-Ready versions) and a 7” TFT color LCD Receiver Monitor (Ready-to-Fly version only). The FPV Receiver
Monitor features One-Touch Automatic Frequency Scanning to find the best frequency for the most reliable picture.
Powered by an external 3S LiPo battery (available separately), the FPV Receiver Monitor can be used for hours on
a single charge. A CNC-machined aluminum adjustable mounting arm provides a solid method to install the FPV
Receiver Monitor onto the transmitter and adjust the viewing angle to suit.
This section details using the 1000TVL color HD camera and the 5.8GHz Video Transmitter included with the
Ready-to-Fly and Receiver-Ready versions, in addition to the FPV Receiver Monitor included with the Ready-to-Fly
version. If you have the Kit version with different FPV equipment, or if you have the Receiver-Ready version and you’re
using a different FPV Receiver Monitor or Video Goggles, please use the reference material included with your FPV
equipment for information about its proper use.
2) Continuously cycle the LED Mode Switch UP and DOWN to select the
desired Color Mode. Select from OFF or ON with one of seven different tail
light colors.

moUnTInG ThE FPV RECEIVER monIToR (READY-To-FLY VERSIon)
1) Carefully thread the 5.8GHz FPV Receiver Monitor Antenna onto the
antenna mount on the back of the FPV Receiver Monitor and tighten
it gently.
During use, the antenna should be pivoted into the vertical position.
2) Assemble the aluminum mounting arm using the illustration on the
separate sheet included with it as a guide.
3) Secure the aluminum mounting plate to the bottom of the FPV Receiver
Monitor, using the M5 x 8mm pan-head screw included.
4) Secure the aluminum mounting arm (with FPV Receiver Monitor attached)
to the transmitter neck strap mount, using the M3 x 10mm socket-cap
screw and aluminum bushing included.
5) Adjust the aluminum mounting arm to angle the FPV Receiver Monitor
viewing angle to suit, then firmly tighten the two adjustment screws to lock
the FPV Receiver Monitor securely in position.
USInG ThE FPV SYSTEm (READY-To-FLY VERSIon)
Prior to using the FPV system, familiarize yourself with the features of the FPV Receiver Monitor.
- Press to manually select channels. Press and HOLD for 3 seconds to begin an automatic
scan of all available channels for the best, most reliable picture.
- Press to decrease Menu values.
- Press to increase Menu values.
- Press to swap video inputs. In most cases, this should be set to AV1.
- Press to change various options, such as Brightness, Contrast, Color, Zoom Mode, Screen Mode,
Language and Reset.
- Press to power the FPV Receiver Monitor ON and OFF.
- Used to plug the 3S LiPo battery’s XH balance connector into to power the FPV Receiver Monitor.
- Indicates when the FPV Receiver Monitor is receiving power (LiPo battery plugged in). If the LiPo battery
is plugged in and the FPV Receiver Monitor is turned OFF, the Power LED will still illuminate Green. This is normal.
- Press to cycle through the four Screen Modes (how the picture is displayed on the FPV Receiver
Monitor), either UP or DOWN, or NORMAL or REVERSED.

Press the FPV OSD Adjust Button on the FPV Video Transmitter to cycle
the position of the FPV Receiver Monitor OSD (On Screen Display) or
to turn it OFF completely. Press and HOLD the FPV OSD Adjust Button to
change the FPV frequency.
USInG ThE FPV SYSTEm
USInG ThE FPV SYSTEm (READY-To-FLY VERSIon), ConTInUED....
1) Fully charge your 3S LiPo battery, then secure it to the back of the FPV
Receiver Monitor, using the Velcro straps provided.
2) Plug the XH balance connector from your LiPo battery into the Power
Input Port. The Power LED should illuminate Green.
3) Make sure that the throttle control stick is all the way back and that the Flight Mode Dial (or the switch on your
transmitter) is in the desired Flight Mode position, then turn the transmitter ON.
4) Place the Quad Racer right-side up on a flat, level surface, then plug your LiPo battery into the Power Connector.
The Condition LED will flash Blue rapidly while a series of audible tones sound.
When the Flight Controller is initialized, the Condition LED will flash Blue slowly.
5) Press the FPV Receiver Monitor ON/OFF switch to turn it ON. If no picture
(snow) is displayed on the FPV Receiver Monitor or if the picture is not clear,
press and HOLD the Channel Scan button for 3 seconds, then release it.
The FPV Receiver Monitor will automatically scan the available channels
and lock on the strongest one. A picture should then be displayed on the
FPV Receiver Monitor.
Remember to unplug your LiPo battery from the FPV Receiver Monitor when not in use!
The UP/DOWN angle of the FPV Camera can be adjusted by firmly
moving the top of the camera forward or aft.

mAInTEnAnCE
In general, your Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer doesn’t require much in the way of maintenance. Routine maintenance
should be performed on a regular basis. In addition, there may come a time when you need to replace the propellers or
bind the transmitter and receiver. This section covers these more common maintenance items you might encounter.
• Before each flight check that the propellers are free of any damage (e.g., nicks, cracks, etc.)
• Periodically check that all fasteners are accounted for and tight. This includes the motor mounting screws, nose
cone and body fairing screws, and all the screws that secure the top and bottom plates together.
• On a weekly basis, apply a drop or two of ball bearing oil to the motor bearings to keep the motors running
smoothly and efficiently. We recommend using Parma Bearing Oil (P/N 943321).
• Periodically clean the outside of the Quad Racer and the transmitter using a damp cloth to keep them free of
dirt and debris. Use a cleaning cloth designed for use with smart phones and tablets to clean the FPV Receiver
Monitor screen.
• Periodically check your LiPo flight battery each time you charge it for any signs of damage or swelling.

BInDInG ThE TRAnSmITTER AnD RECEIVER (READY-To-FLY VERSIon)
The transmitter and receiver have been paired at the factory and are ready for use. Follow the procedures in this
section if you should ever need to re-bind the transmitter and receiver. For example, if you needed to replace the
receiver as a result of a crash or if the transmitter requires replacement.
REPLACInG ThE PRoPELLERS (ALL VERSIonS)
Do not attempt to fly your Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer if one or more of the propellers are damaged. Flying with
damaged propellers is not safe and can make the Quad Racer fly uncontrollably or cause bad vibrations that
can damage your Quad Racer.
1) To remove the propellers, carefully hold the propeller in one hand (be
careful not to cut yourself on the sharp blade edge) and use the carbon
fiber wrench included to loosen and remove the spinner nut.
2) Remove the damaged propeller, then reinstall the replacement propeller,
making sure that you install the correct one (either ‘5030’ or ‘5030R’)
depending on the motor direction of rotation.
Use the top view photo on page 8 to determine what motor to install each propeller on, either clockwise
rotation (‘5030R’) or counter-clockwise rotation (‘5030’). The names ‘5030’ and ‘5030R’ are molded into the
top of each propeller to differentiate them. The text should face UP when the propellers are installed.
Make sure to install the replacement propellers in the correct configuration or the quadcopter won’t fly.
oPEnPILoT GCS CC3D FLIGhT ConTRoLLER SoFTwARE
The Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer features a CC3D Digital Flight Controller that is programmed from the factory and
is ready for use; however, some programming changes may be required for proper use with your transmitter if you
have the Kit or Receiver-Ready version. The OpenPilot GCS CC3D Flight Controller software allows you to connect
your Batfly 250 FPV Quad Racer to your PC or laptop and make programming changes and parameter adjustments
to suit your specific setup.
For example, you are able to program the Flight Controller to work with your S.Bus or DSMX or DSM2 receiver, check
control stick outputs to ensure the flight controls are operating correctly, assign Flight Modes to the switch or dial you
want to use to remotely change Flight Modes, adjust Motor Arming Timeout settings, update the firmware and more.
1) Turn the transmitter ON, then plug your LiPo flight battery in and allow
the gyros to calibrate and the Flight Controller to initialize. The Receiver
Condition LED will flash slowly Green.
2) Place the transmitter within 2 feet of the receiver, then press and release
the Receiver Bind Button. The Receiver Condition LED will turn solid Green,
indicating the binding process is complete.
