Introduction
This HP Access Control Card Reader Install Guide provides instructions on how to install the HP Access
Control (HPAC) Secure Printing card readers on HP devices. It includes step-by-step guides for installing
both external and internal card readers.
External card readers include Universal Serial Bus (USB) and Compact Flash readers. Internal card
readers include Hardware Integration Pocket (HIP) readers.
This guide also describes the card reader hardware components and how to verify the card reader
installation.

1 External USB card readers
This chapter provides information on the external USB card reader hardware components and gives
step-by-step instructions for installing the card reader on HP devices.
External USB card readers can be installed on either an external or internal USB port. Instructions for
both options are provided in this chapter.

USB card reader hardware
The HPAC Secure Printing USB external card reader hardware contains the following parts:
●HPAC proximity card/badge reader that connects to the host USB port of the device
NOTE: There is one reader per type of proximity card. The cards compatible with the reader are
indicated on the back of the card reader.
●An enhanced input/output (EIO) slot plate with a hole to route the USB cable out of the device
formatter (used for installing on an internal USB port only)
●Two adhesive cable brackets to route the reader cable from the back to the front of the device
(optional)
●A double-sided adhesive strip, applied to the back of the reader, to affix the reader on the device
case (optional)
NOTE: Be sure to affix the adhesive strip on either side of the product label on the back of the
reader. Do not affix the adhesive strip over the bar code on the back of the reader, as that
information is necessary for support.

Install USB card reader on external USB port
Most HP devices feature an external type A female USB port that accepts special USB devices, such
as the HPAC USB card reader.
For a list of HP devices that support USB card readers, see HP devices that support USB card readers
on page 42.
NOTE: Connect the card reader to the device before the device is plugged in and the power turned
on. The device does not recognize the card reader if it is plugged in after the device is turned on.
NOTE: If there is a gray sticker covering the external USB port, remove this sticker to install the card
reader.
HP devices generally
To install the USB card reader to an external USB port on HP devices, complete the following steps:
1. Turn off the power to the device.
2. Locate the type A female USB port on the back of the device.
3. Connect the card reader to the USB port.
4. Turn on the power to the device.
HP LaserJet M3035 MFP
To install the USB card reader to an external USB port on the HP LaserJet M3035 MFP, complete the
following steps:
1. Turn off the power to the device.
2. Locate the type A female USB port on the back of the device.

3. Connect the card reader to the USB port.

4. Turn on the power to the device.
HP Color LaserJet 4730/CM4730 MFP
NOTE: The HP Color LaserJet 4730 MFP and HP Color LaserJet CM4730 MFP have an external USB
port. These devices do not have an internal USB port, but do feature an internal Compact Flash slot.
To install the USB card reader to an external USB port on the HP Color LaserJet 4730 MFP or HP Color
LaserJet CM4730 MFP, complete the following steps:
1. Turn off the power to the device.
2. Locate the type A female USB port on the back of the device.

3. Connect the card reader to the USB port.

4. Turn on the power to the device.
HP LaserJet M5035 MFP
To install the USB card reader to an external USB port on the HP LaserJet M5035 MFP, complete the
following steps:
1. Turn off the power to the device.
2. Locate the type A female USB port on the back of the device.

4. Turn on the power to the device.
HP Color LaserJet CM6030/CM6040 MFP
To install the USB card reader to an external USB port on the HP Color LaserJet CM6030 MFP or HP
Color LaserJet CM6040 MFP, complete the following steps:
1. Turn off the power to the device.
2. Locate the type A female USB port on the back of the device.

4. Turn on the power to the device.
HP CM8050/CM8060 Color MFP
To install the USB card reader on an external USB port for the HP CM8050 Color MFP or HP CM8060
Color MFP, complete the following steps:
1. Turn off the power to the device.
2. Locate the type A female USB port (next to the boot codes LCD monitor).

3. Connect the card reader to the USB port.

4. Turn on the power to the device.
HP Digital Sender 9250c
To install the USB card reader to an external USB port on the HP Digital Sender 9250c, complete the
following steps:
1. Turn off the power to the device.
2. Locate the type A female USB port on the back of the device.
3. Connect the card reader to the USB port.

Install USB card reader on internal USB port
Some HP devices feature an internal type A female USB port that accepts special USB devices, such
as the HPAC USB card reader.
To install the USB card reader on an internal USB port, use the supplied EIO plate with the card reader's
cable routed through the plate.

For a list of HP devices that support USB card readers, see HP devices that support USB card readers
on page 42.
NOTE: Connect the card reader to the device before the device is plugged in and the power turned
on. The device does not recognize the card reader if it is plugged in after the device is turned on.
HP devices generally
To install the USB card reader on an internal USB port on HP devices, complete the following steps:
1. Turn off the power to the device.
2. Disconnect the power cable from the device.
3. Remove the device formatter cover.
4. Remove the existing EIO plate.
5. Insert the supplied EIO plate with cable protection. Make sure to route the card reader’s USB cable
through the plate.
6. Insert the card reader into an unused internal USB port.
7. Replace the device formatter cover.
8. Connect the power cable to the device.
9. Turn on the power to the device.

HP LaserJet M3035 MFP
To install the USB card reader on an internal USB port on the HP LaserJet M3035 MFP, complete the
following steps:
1. Turn off the power to the device.
2. Disconnect the power cable from the device.
3. Remove the device formatter cover.

5. Insert the supplied EIO plate with cable protection. Make sure to route the card reader’s USB cable
through the plate.
6. Insert the card reader into an unused internal USB port.

8. Connect the power cable to the device.
9. Turn on the power to the device.
HP LaserJet M5035 MFP
To install the USB card reader on an internal USB port on the HP LaserJet M5035 MFP, complete the
following steps:
1. Turn off the power to the device.
2. Disconnect the power cable from the device.
