HP ConfigTailor — An Overview
HP ConfigTailor is a software deployment and recovery tool—a
complete solution for helping MIS staff and end-users quickly, easily
and reliably install their corporate operating environment onto HP
Kayak PC Workstations. This new tool is a powerful suite of software
utilities that build upon the unattended setup features incorporated
into Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 to allow simultaneous and unattended
installation of complete operating environments onto multiple PC
workstations.
The HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM is multi-functional—designed to be
useful to all HP Kayak PC Workstation customers:
1Customers with large operations can use HP ConfigTailor to
manage their software installations centrally using a client/server
configuration, allowing MIS staff to:
•Construct a robust network-accessible database server to act as a
storehouse of all required software components.
•Define customized configuration profiles to install relevant
drivers and software applications onto targeted client PC
workstations.
Each client PC Workstation can:
•If authorized, install components from the database in addition to
those pre-selected for them in an installation profile (for HP
ConfigTailor 1.0 only).
•Recover their operating system environment and system
configuration in the event of a system crash.

The following diagram illustrates the client/server software distribution
process using HP ConfigTailor:
Using HP ConfigTailor to centrally manage system configurations
involves two steps: setting up a deployment database on a server (see
“How to Create a Deployment Database” on page 7), and then installing
the required system configuration onto client HP Kayak PC
Workstations (see “Remote Installation from a Deployment Database to
a Client PC workstation” on page 43).

2For customers with smaller operations, the HP ConfigTailor
CD-ROM has utilities to install and recover your operating
environment. Your Windows NT 4.0 operating system and HP Kayak
PC Workstation drivers, utilities and licensed applications are
installed with ease by booting from the HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM1.
These utilities are described in detail in “Local Installation” on page
45, and in “Locally Updating Drivers and Utilities” on page 47.
HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM Contents
The HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM contains the following software
applications for HP Kayak PC workstations:
•PC workstation platform-specific drivers for:
- Video cards
- SCSI cards and controllers
- IDE controllers
- LAN cards
- Audio cards
•HP-supported software applications2:
- Netscape Communicator 4.0
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
- McAfee VirusScan
•HP utilities2:
-HPTopTools
- HP DiagTools
- Other HP utilities such as HP Lock, HP enhanced keyboard, HP
scrolling mouse and HP Soft PowerDown.
Each of the above packages is available on the HP ConfigTailor CD-
ROM in the following formats:

installation or local recovery processes. These files are located on
the CD-ROM under: \NT4\preload\..
2Update format, to reinstall a driver, HP-utility or software
application while the operating system is running. Note that software
applications in this format support Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95 and
Windows 98 operating systems. These files are located under the
following folders:
\NT4\update\..
\W95\update\..
\W98\update\..
Other folders on the HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM are:
•\HP\.. This folder contains utilities and network drivers necessary
for the deployment and installation processes.
•\BIN\.. This folder contains files used for the CD-ROM AutoRun
feature.
•\TEMPLATE\.. This folder contains template files you may want to
use to create your own customized packages for unattended
installation purposes.
Viewing CD-ROM contents on line
If you’d like to see a detailed list of the drivers available on the CD-
ROM, they may be viewed using your web browser.
For HP ConfigTailor 1.0:
aInsert the HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
bThe welcome screen (shown on page 9) will appear on your default
web browser (if not, refer to “Troubleshooting Common Problems”
on page 49).
cTo view the drivers contained on the CD-ROM, under User Tasks,
click on Update drivers and utilities.
dClick on List the drivers available on this CD-ROM. You can choose
to view the drivers for HP Kayak XA05xx PC workstations from this
screen (shown on page 5). Click on Go.
eA web page will tabulate all of the drivers (device name and version
numbers) available on the CD-ROM.

For HP ConfigTailor 1.1:
aInsert the HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
bThe welcome screen (shown on page 12) will appear on your default
web browser.
cClick on View CD-ROM Contents. You will be linked to a short
description of the task you have selected. Click Go.
dClick on List the drivers available on this CD-ROM. You can choose
to view the drivers for a specific platform or for all platforms from
this window (shown below). Click on Go.
eA web page will tabulate all of the drivers (device name and version
numbers) available on the CD-ROM.

How to Create a Deployment Database
Using the Hewlett-Packard ConfigTailor deployment process to
remotely install software onto multiple PC workstations is a multi-step
process:
1First, install HP ConfigTailor onto the PC you choose to be the
deployment database server (see “Installing HP ConfigTailor” on
page 8). A deployment database of drivers, utilities and software
applications will be set up automatically.
2Define software lists (HP ConfigTailor 1.1 only). A software list is
specific to a single HP Kayak PC Workstation platform and a single
version of Windows NT 4.0 (one language and one service pack). The
list contains an array of those drivers and software applications that
you would like to be installed onto a particular model of client PC
workstation. This feature allows MIS managers to easily install only
the HP drivers and utilities relevant to a particular platform, in an
easy and reproducible manner. For example, you could define a
software list for the Kayak XA 0503, containing only drivers specific
to this platform and a single operating system. This process is
detailed in “Setting up Software Lists (HP ConfigTailor 1.1 Only)” on
page 15.
3Define the configuration profile(s) applicable to client PC
Workstations using the Configuration Wizard. Configuration profiles
define common operating environment characteristics of a group of
client PC workstations. More detailed information is given in
“Creating and Modifying Configuration Profiles using the
Configuration Wizard Utility” on page 20.
4Lastly, once the configuration profiles have been defined, you can
begin installing the software onto individual client PC workstations.
This process is described in the chapter entitled “Client Tasks” on
page 43.

Installing HP ConfigTailor
Any PC can act as the deployment database server providing that it
meets the following criteria:
•It is running under Windows NT 4.0.
•It is accessible by the client PC Workstations via a NetBEUI network.
•Adequate hard disk space is available (a minimum of 800 MB free
disk space is recommended).
•You must be logged directly onto the PC under Windows NT with
administrator privileges. You will be required to perform tasks (such
as Sharing folders) which must be done locally.
During the installation of HP ConfigTailor on the PC you have chosen
to act as the server, you will also install the elements necessary to
create a deployment database.
A deployment database allows you to store the essential elements of a
common working environment on an accessible server to enable easy
installation onto client PC Workstations. A deployment database can
contain:
•Up to six Windows NT 4.0 operating system language versions:
English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Japanese.
•Device drivers (for LAN cards or display adapters, for example)
for one or more HP Kayak PC workstation platforms.
•HP-specific software, such as HP TopTools or HP Lock.
•HP-supplied licensed applications supplied on the CD-ROM (such
as Netscape®Communicator).

NOTE HP ConfigTailor 1.0 was the first release of the product and only
supports HP Kayak XA05xx PC workstations. HP ConfigTailor 1.1 adds
greater functionality and increased platform support, and is therefore
the recommended version for first-time installations.
1Insert the HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive on the
server PC. There is an autorun function that will open up the HP
ConfigTailor 1.0 Welcome Screen on your default browser in a few
moments, as shown below.

2Read the entire welcome screen. It explains that you can either use
the HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM to set up a software deployment
database on the server of your choice, or locally install HP-supplied
software directly from the CD-ROM onto your Kayak PC
Workstation. Under System Administrator Tasks, you will see two
options. Click on “Create a deployment database”.
3A screen entitled “Create a Deployment Database” will appear in
your browser window. This screen describes the steps to follow to
create a software deployment database on a server. In step 1, you will
be invited to “Click Here” to create a deployment database. By
clicking on the mouse, you will launch HP ConfigTailor’s Setup
utility.
4The Setup utility will open an HP ConfigTailor Installation screen.
The installation procedure is as follows:
aSelect the language version(s) of Windows NT 4.0 you would like
installed. You must choose at least one operating system version,
but you may choose up to six versions if desired. The Windows
NT 4.0 language versions supported are: English, French, Italian,
German, Spanish and Japanese.
bSpecify which folder you would like to install HP ConfigTailor
into. The folders that HP ConfigTailor will create are by default:
c:\program files\HP ConfigTailor\HP Software\..
for software utilities and applications
and
c:\program files\HP ConfigTailor\OS Versions\..
for NT 4.0 operating system files.
If you choose to install HP ConfigTailor on a drive different than
the default, you must first create the folder structure on the
drive you would like to install to, and then browse for these
folders when prompted for the path.
cThe packages contained on the HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM (device
drivers and software applications) will now be copied to your
server.

dAfter the packages have been copied, you will be requested to
remove the HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM and insert the Windows NT
4.0 and Service Pack CD-ROMs. The required operating system
files will then be copied to your server.
5Once the setup utility has finished, it is imperative that you share the
folders where HP ConfigTailor is installed using certain naming
conventions. To share the HP Software folder:
aOpen Windows Explorer.
bBy clicking once, highlight the folder containing software utilities
and applications—by default:
c:\program files\HP ConfigTailor\HP Software
cRight-click using the mouse and select Sharing.
dIn the Sharing window, select Shared As, and type (in capitals —
Windows NT is case-sensitive):
HPSERVER
eClick Ok.
To share the OS Versions folder:
aOpen Windows Explorer.
bBy clicking once, highlight the folder containing the operating
system files—by default
c:\program files\HP ConfigTailor\OS Versions
cRight-click using the mouse and select Sharing.
dIn the Sharing window, select Shared As, and type (in capitals —
Windows NT is case-sensitive):
OSSERVER
eClick Ok.
The HP ConfigTailor program has now been installed, along with the
elements necessary to create a deployment database.You can access
the HP ConfigTailor utilities by clicking on Start>Programs>HP

Installing HP ConfigTailor 1.1
This procedure describes a first-time installation of HP
ConfigTailor 1.1. For information on how to upgrade from HP
ConfigTailor 1.0 to HP ConfigTailor 1.1, please refer to “Upgrading from
HP ConfigTailor 1.0 to HP ConfigTailor 1.1” on page 39.
1Insert the HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive on the
server PC. There is an autorun function that will open up the HP
ConfigTailor 1.1 Welcome Screen on your default web browser in a
few moments, as shown below.
2Click on “Create Deployment Database”. This will scroll you to a
short description on creating a deployment database. Click Go to
launch HP ConfigTailor’s Setup utility.

3The Setup utility will open an HP ConfigTailor Installation screen.
The installation procedure is as follows:
aSelect the HP Kayak PC workstation models that you will have as
clients. The platforms that you select will determine which device
drivers will be available on the deployment database. You must
select at least one platform.
bSelect the language version(s) of Windows NT 4.0 you would like
installed. You may choose up to six versions: English, French,
Italian, German, Spanish and Japanese. It is not necessary to
select an operating system version at this time—you may do so
once the installation of HP ConfigTailor setup utility is complete.
Refer to “Add/Remove Operating System Version” on page 36, for
more information.
cSpecify which folder you would like to install HP ConfigTailor
into. The folders that HP ConfigTailor will create are by default:
c:\program files\HP ConfigTailor\HP Software\..
for software utilities and applications
and
c:\program files\HP ConfigTailor\OS Versions\..
for NT 4.0 operating system files.
If you choose to install HP ConfigTailor on a drive different than

The HP ConfigTailor Toolbar
NOTE The HP ConfigTailor toolbar is available with HP ConfigTailor 1.1 only.
In HP ConfigTailor 1.1, a toolbar to facilitate access to the program’s
different utilities has been created (shown below). A shortcut to this
toolbar will be automatically created on your desktop, or you may

access it by clicking on Start>Programs>HP ConfigTailor>ConfigTailor
Toolbar.
The HP ConfigTailor toolbar contains six icons corresponding to the
different utilities you need to create and maintain your deployment
database as well as an online help utility. These utilities will be
described later in this chapter and in Chapter 3.
Setting up Software Lists (HP ConfigTailor 1.1 Only)
After having installed HP ConfigTailor 1.1, the next step in setting up a
deployment database is the creation of software list(s).Default
software lists for each platform selected during Installation (see page
13) will be created automatically, but you may also create your own, or
customize the default software lists.
NOTE If you have installed HP ConfigTailor 1.0, go directly to “Creating and
Modifying Configuration Profiles using the Configuration Wizard Utility”
on page 20. If you want to upgrade to HP ConfigTailor 1.1, refer to
“Upgrading from HP ConfigTailor 1.0 to HP ConfigTailor 1.1” on page
39.
To open the Software List Manager, click on its icon in the HP
ConfigTailor toolbar or select Start>HP ConfigTailor>

window will prompt you to either create a new software list, or open an
existing software list, as below:
NOTE If you click Cancel, you will be directed to the Software List Manager
main window (shown on page 17).
Creating a new software list
1Either:
aFrom the Software List Manager introduction window (shown
above), select “Create a new software list” and click OK.
or,
bFrom the Software List Manager window (shown on page 17). In
the Software list menu, select New.
