HP ConfigTailor — An Overview
HP ConfigTailor is a software deployment and recovery tool—a
complete solution for helping MIS staff and end-users quickly, easily
and reliably install their corporate operating environment onto HP
Kayak PC Workstations. This new tool is a powerful suite of software
utilities that build upon the unattended setup features incorporated
into Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 to allow simultaneous and unattended
installation of complete operating environments onto multiple PC
workstations.
The HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM is multi-functional—designed to be
useful to all HP Kayak PC Workstation customers:
1Customers with large operations can use HP ConfigTailor to
manage their software installations centrally using a client/server
configuration, allowing MIS staff to:
•Construct a robust network-accessible database server to act as a
storehouse of all required software components.
•Define customized configuration profiles to install relevant
drivers and software applications onto targeted client PC
workstations.
Each client PC Workstation can:
•If authorized, install components from the database in addition to
those pre-selected for them in an installation profile (for HP
ConfigTailor 1.0 only).
•Recover their operating system environment and system
configuration in the event of a system crash.

The following diagram illustrates the client/server software distribution
process using HP ConfigTailor:
Using HP ConfigTailor to centrally manage system configurations
involves two steps: setting up a deployment database on a server (see
“How to Create a Deployment Database” on page 7), and then installing
the required system configuration onto client HP Kayak PC
Workstations (see “Remote Installation from a Deployment Database to
a Client PC workstation” on page 43).

2For customers with smaller operations, the HP ConfigTailor
CD-ROM has utilities to install and recover your operating
environment. Your Windows NT 4.0 operating system and HP Kayak
PC Workstation drivers, utilities and licensed applications are
installed with ease by booting from the HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM1.
These utilities are described in detail in “Local Installation” on page
45, and in “Locally Updating Drivers and Utilities” on page 47.
HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM Contents
The HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM contains the following software
applications for HP Kayak PC workstations:
•PC workstation platform-specific drivers for:
- Video cards
- SCSI cards and controllers
- IDE controllers
- LAN cards
- Audio cards
•HP-supported software applications2:
- Netscape Communicator 4.0
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
- McAfee VirusScan
•HP utilities2:
-HPTopTools
- HP DiagTools
- Other HP utilities such as HP Lock, HP enhanced keyboard, HP
scrolling mouse and HP Soft PowerDown.
Each of the above packages is available on the HP ConfigTailor CD-
ROM in the following formats:

installation or local recovery processes. These files are located on
the CD-ROM under: \NT4\preload\..
2Update format, to reinstall a driver, HP-utility or software
application while the operating system is running. Note that software
applications in this format support Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95 and
Windows 98 operating systems. These files are located under the
following folders:
\NT4\update\..
\W95\update\..
\W98\update\..
Other folders on the HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM are:
•\HP\.. This folder contains utilities and network drivers necessary
for the deployment and installation processes.
•\BIN\.. This folder contains files used for the CD-ROM AutoRun
feature.
•\TEMPLATE\.. This folder contains template files you may want to
use to create your own customized packages for unattended
installation purposes.
Viewing CD-ROM contents on line
If you’d like to see a detailed list of the drivers available on the CD-
ROM, they may be viewed using your web browser.
For HP ConfigTailor 1.0:
aInsert the HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
bThe welcome screen (shown on page 9) will appear on your default
web browser (if not, refer to “Troubleshooting Common Problems”
on page 49).
cTo view the drivers contained on the CD-ROM, under User Tasks,
click on Update drivers and utilities.
dClick on List the drivers available on this CD-ROM. You can choose
to view the drivers for HP Kayak XA05xx PC workstations from this
screen (shown on page 5). Click on Go.
eA web page will tabulate all of the drivers (device name and version
numbers) available on the CD-ROM.

For HP ConfigTailor 1.1:
aInsert the HP ConfigTailor CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
bThe welcome screen (shown on page 12) will appear on your default
web browser.
cClick on View CD-ROM Contents. You will be linked to a short
description of the task you have selected. Click Go.
dClick on List the drivers available on this CD-ROM. You can choose
to view the drivers for a specific platform or for all platforms from
this window (shown below). Click on Go.
eA web page will tabulate all of the drivers (device name and version
numbers) available on the CD-ROM.
