equivalent, and have at least six months of experience servicing the HP Vectra PCs.
It is a self-paced training guide designed to train you to install, configure, and repair the PC.
You can follow it without having any equipment available.

It is important to note the following information:
• There are no models fitted with second-level cache memory as standard.
• All models with 16 MB of main memory are pre-loaded with selectable Windows 95 or
Windows for Workgroups 3.11 software.
• HP does not recommend using Windows 95 on a PC with only 8 MB of main memory.
PRODUCT FEATURES
Overview
The HP Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 is a PENTIUM (P54) processor, ISA/PCI-based PC. The
system consists of a system board and a backplane.

• The desktop’s backplane has one PCI slot, one combination ISA/PCI slot, one ISA slot
and one HP proprietary ISA slot for accessory boards.
New Features
• A completely upgradable Pentium-based system board (using system board
switches and voltage regulator module).
• A new keyboard supporting Windows 95 special key functions.
• Vectra Ergonomic Power Solution (VEPS): space bar power-on (under any
operating system), push-button status panel, and software shutdown from
Windows 95.
• HP’s new style BIOS.
System Board
The main features of the system board are:
• A system board that can mount PENTIUM processors (with accompanying Voltage
Regulation Module) at several different clock speeds (75 MHz, 100 MHz and 133 MHz).
• A new type of main memory module called EDO (Extended Data Output) for faster
memory access times (60 ns).
• Optional 256KB of synchronous pipeline burst level 2 cache.
• A 64-bit host bus for PENTIUM processor, cache and main memory.
• A 32-bit Peripheral Component Interconnection (PCI) local bus for accessing the video
controller and IDE controller.
• An Industry-Standard Architecture (ISA) bus for ISA-compatible controllers (for devices
such as flexible disk drives, serial ports, parallel port, and audio card in multimedia
models).
• A dual password (administrator and user) security system that provides protection against
unauthorized use of the PC.
• A flash BIOS updating facility.
Microprocessor
The Pentium microprocessors used in the HP Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 use internal clock
multiplication, similar to that used by the 486 DX2 processor. The microprocessor’s internal
clock is a multiple of the system clock. The Pentium 75 MHz and 100 MHz processors multiply
the 50 MHz and 66 MHz system clock by a factor of 1.5. The Pentium 133 MHz processor
doubles the 66 MHz system clock. The Pentium 150 MHz processor multiplies the 60 MHz
system clock by a factor of 2.5. To set the appropriate switches for each processor speed,
refer to the Pentium Processor table in the section System Board Switches in chapter 2.
The system board of the HP Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 has a Voltage Regulator Module (VRM)
which supplies the Pentium processor with the correct voltage. The VRM allows the processor
to be upgraded without replacing the system board.

The 75 MHz, 90 MHz, 100 MHz, 133 MHz, 150 MHz and 166 MHz processors need a passive
shortening block VRM (providing VCC voltage). The appropriate VRM is provided with each
processor upgrade kit.
Cache Memory
The microprocessor has two 8 KB first-level cache memories: one for instruction codes and
the other for data.
The HP Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 PC has a socket for a 256 KB second-level cache memory
module. There are two modules available, a 256 KB asynchronous cache memory module
(D4049A) or a 256 KB synchronous cache memory module (D3659A).
When the optional second level cache is not installed, the cache socket protector must be
installed in the empty cache. The role of the cache socket protector is to properly terminate
the Pentium host bus.
Main Memory
The HP Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 PC has six DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory)
sockets on the system board. The PC uses 60ns, 32-bit wide, EDO memory modules. 8 MB
(two 4 MB modules) or 16 MB (two 8 MB modules) of memory is supplied as standard,
expandable to 128 MB.
Memory modules
must be installed in pairs of identical modules .
NOTE Install I. Bank C supports only single density
memory modules.
EDO (Extended Data Out) memory is a new type of memory that boosts overall access times.
It does this by utilizing the clock cycles more effectively, improving data throughput.
The memory upgrades available are:
• 8 MB kit (2×4 MB modules), 32-bit, 60 ns (D3646A)
• 16 MB kit (2×8 MB modules), 32-bit, 60 ns (D3647A)
• 32 MB kit (2×16 MB modules), 32-bit, 60 ns (D3648A)
• 20×4 MB module kit, 32-bit, 60 ns (D2878A)
• 20×8 MB module kit, 32-bit, 60 ns (D2879A)
System ROM/BIOS
The Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 has a BIOS system ROM that uses flash EEPROM technology.
The flash ROM can be updated with the latest BIOS firmware using the Phlash program
(PHLASH.EXE) supplied with the firmware upgrade. Refer to "Updating the System ROM," in
chapter 3.
The PC has HP’s new style BIOS co-developed with Phoenix Technologies. The system BIOS
is identified by the version number GU 05.xx.
POST
The Power-On Self Test (POST) is performed when the PC is started. The POST displays a
graphic screen with the HP Vectra logo. If the POST detects an error, the error message is
displayed and the SETUP program can be run to check the configuration.

To see the tests performed during the POST, press [ESC] when the HP Vectra logo appears
and the display will switch to text mode. In this mode, a summary configuration screen will be
displayed at the end of the POST. Pressing the PAUSE/BREAK key at any time will allow you
to inspect the screen contents. Press any key to resume.
SETUP Program
The HP Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 PC has an integrated SETUP program.
SETUP is started by pressing [F2] when the message Setup=F2 appears during the POST.
Integrated Video Controller
All models feature an integrated 64-bit PCI video controller (Cirrus Logic 5436) with 1 MB
DRAM video memory as standard, upgradable to 2 MB (refer to "Installing Video Memory" in
chapter 2).
All models are DDC-1 compliant. This allows the PC to automatically configure for the
optimum video settings (such as maximum refresh rate) when a DDC-1 compliant display is
connected.
NOTE Video modes incorporating an 85 Hz refresh rate are
only available on HP Vectra VE 5/xx Series 2 PCs
with System BIOS versions GU 07.01 (featuring
Video BIOS version 1.10) and later.

Flexible Disk Controller
The integrated flexible disk controller is on the ISA bus and supports two devices. Flexible disk
drives and tape drives can be connected to this controller.
IDE Disk Controller
The integrated IDE hard disk controller is on the PCI bus. This controller has two channels,
each with a separate data cable and system board connector. Each channel supports up to two
devices.
The primary channel is marked HDD on the system board and is recommended for hard disk
drives. Connecting a CD-ROM drive to this channel is not recommended, as the CD-ROM
drive can slow down the transfer rate of a faster IDE device.
On the primary channel data cable, the inside device connector is used for the master
(bootable) drive, and the outside (or end) device connector for the slave drive. This is true as
long as the Cable Select (CS) jumper on the IDE device is set (default factory configuration).
The secondary channel is marked CD-ROM on the system board and has red device
connectors. This channel is for a supplementary hard disk drive or CD-ROM drive. The cable
has one device connector, allowing a single IDE device to be connected.
Mounting Rails
To install non-HP drives (hard disk drives, tape drives, CD-ROM drives) in the front access
slots, the Mounting Rails Kit 5063-7922 must be ordered. This kit contains two sets of rails,
one for a 3.5-inch drive and one for a 5.25-inch drive.

Control Panel
The HP Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 PC has a control panel with the following features:
• a power on/off button
• a power on status light (which flickers in power-saving mode)
• a hard disk activity light (for IDE drives).
Security Features
The PC has the following security features:
• power-on prompt, with administratorand/or user password
• power-on keyboard lock, with user password
• communications port protection (ports can be disabled in SETUP)
• write protection of flexible disk drives
• disabling or enabling flexible disk drive

• system configuration protection, with administrator password

The PC has the following external communications ports:
• One 25-pin parallel port (ECP/EPP bi-directional Centronics supporting IEEE 1284)
• Two 9-pin serial ports (16550-compatible).

Pre-loaded Software
The first time the PC is turned on, a software initialization program runs to allow the user to set
up the pre-installed software. For the models with Windows 95, the user has a once-only
choice between Windows 95 and Windows 3.11 during the first power-on.

2 PC HARDWARE STRUCTURE
After reading this chapter, you will be familiar with the PC’s package and hardware assembly.
PACKAGING
The HP Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 PCs have the same mid-profile desktop package as the HP
Vectra VL 5/xx series 4 desktop PCs.
CAUTION: Unplug the power cord before removing the
PC’s cover.
Ensure that all connectors are unplugged before
removing the system board from the PC.

The main external features of the HP Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 PC are:
• connectors for I/O devices on the rear panel

INSTALLING MAIN MEMORY
The HP Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 PC has three memory banks each comprising two memory
sockets. These banks are labelled A, B and C on the system board.
A maximum of 128 MB main memory is supported.
When additional memory modules are installed, the following rules must be applied:
1 Memory modules
must be installed in pairs .
2 The two modules sharing a bank
must be identical .
3 Different banks can contain memory module pairs of different sizes.
4 Install only 4 or 16 MB memory modules in bank C.

INSTALLING VIDEO MEMORY
The HP Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 PC is shipped with 1 MB of video memory which can be
expanded to 2 MB for resolutions of up to 1280 5 1024 in 256 colors. (For information on
supported video resolutions, refer to "Integrated Video Controller," in chapter 1.)
The upgrade kit (D3500A) comprises two modules of 512 KB. These two VRAM modules are
identical and must be installed together. When inserting the modules, carefully align the
corner dot on the module with the corner marker (a small triangle with “AMP” written in it) on
the socket. If a module is incorrectly inserted, you will need the PLLC Extraction Tool (part
number 5041-2553) to remove the module from the socket.

INSTALLING CACHE MEMORY
The HP Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 PC has a socket for an optional 256 KB second-level cache
memory module.
Two upgrade kits are available:

• One module of 256 KB asynchronous second-level cache memory (D4049A), or
• One module of 256 KB
synchronous second-level cache memory (D3659A).
To install a cache memory module, remove the cache memory socket protector and insert the
module into the socket as shown below.

INSTALLING AN ACCESSORY BOARD
Accessory Board Slots
The HP Vectra VE 5/xx series 2 PC has four slots that can be used for installing accessory
boards. For details on the accessory board slots, refer to "VE 5/xx series 2 PC Backplane," in
chapter 2.
