This document describes how to install a second front system fan in an HP 800 Workstation.

Warnings and cautions
WARNING! Any surface or area of the equipment marked with this symbol indicates the presence
of an electrical shock hazard. To reduce the risk of injury from electrical shock, do not open any enclosed
area marked with this symbol.
WARNING! To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to your equipment:
— Do not disable the power cord grounding plug. The grounding plug is an important safety feature.
— Plug the power cord in a grounded (earthed) outlet that is easily accessible at all times.
— Disconnect power from the equipment by unplugging the power cord from the electrical outlet.

of a hot surface or hot component. If this surface is contacted, the potential for injury exists. To reduce
the risk of injury from a hot component, enable the surface to cool before touching.
CAUTION: Static electricity can damage the electronic components of the workstation. Before
beginning these procedures, be sure you discharge static electricity by briefly touching a grounded metal
object.

Installing the second front system fan
For detailed instructions and illustrations, see the Maintenance and Service Guide for your HP
Workstation at http://www.hp.com/support/workstation_manuals.
To install the second front system fan:
1. Power down the workstation, and then disconnect the power cord.
2. Power down all external devices, and then disconnect them from the workstation.
3. Remove the side access panel.
4. Remove the airflow guide and the expansion card support.
5. If one or more graphics cards are engaged in the expansion card guide/front fan holder, disconnect
them and remove them from the workstation.
6. Unclip the unused auxiliary graphics power cable(s) from the expansion card guide/front fan holder
storage receptacles, and then disengage all auxiliary graphics power cables from the cable
retention hook adjacent to the system board.
7. Disconnect the existing fan connector from the system board.
8. Press the two green recessed touch points to release the expansion card guide/front fan holder,
and then remove it from the workstation.
9. Install the fan in the expansion card guide/front fan holder.
10. Route the fan wire for the second fan with the wire for the first fan, securing both wires into the
retainer clips on the end of the expansion card guide/front fan holder.
11. Reinstall the expansion card guide/front fan holder in the workstation.
NOTE: It may be necessary to press down on the expansion card guide/fan holder firmly to
overcome cable resistance in order to engage the 4 hooks.
12. Attach the fan connectors to the appropriate ports on the system board.
NOTE: To locate appropriate system board connectors, see the service label on the side access
panel.
13. Secure unused auxiliary graphics power cable(s) to the expansion card guide/front fan holder
storage receptacles, and route all auxiliary graphics power cables into the cable retention hook
adjacent to the system board.
14. Reinstall and reconnect the graphics cards, if applicable.
15. Reinstall the airflow guide and the expansion card support.
16. Reinstall the side access panel, and then reconnect and restore power to the workstation and all
external devices.
