This chapter identifies the visible hardware features of your
notebook.
To find out how to use a feature, such as hotkeys, or to find out
about a general topic, such as Standby or Hibernation, refer to the
other chapters in this guide.

TouchPad
Component Description
1TouchPad light On: TouchPad is enabled.
2TouchPad* Moves the pointer and selects or
activates items on the screen.
3Left and right TouchPad

Function like the left and right buttons
on an external mouse.
4TouchPad left/right
scroll zone*
Scrolls left or right.
5TouchPad up/down

Scrolls up or down.
6TouchPad button Enables/disables the TouchPad.

Component Description
1Function keys Perform system and application tasks.
When combined with the fn key, the
function keys perform additional tasks
as hotkeys.
For more information, refer to “Hotkey
and Shortcut Key Quick Reference” in
Chapter 2.
2fn key Combines with other keys to perform
system tasks and activates hotkeys.
For example, pressing fn+f8 increases
screen brightness.
3Windows® logo key Displays the Windows Start menu.
4Windows applications key Displays a shortcut menu for items
beneath the pointer.
5Keypad keys (17) Standard numeric keypad.

Component Description
Power/standby button* When the notebook is
■Off, press to turn on the notebook.
■On, briefly press to initiate Hibernation.
■In Standby, briefly press to resume from
Standby.
■In Hibernation, briefly press to restore from
Hibernation.
✎If the system has stopped responding
and Microsoft® Windows® shutdown
procedures cannot be used, press and
hold the power/standby button for at
least 4 seconds to turn off the
notebook.
*This table describes default settings. For information about changing the
function of the power/standby button or display switch, refer to “Managing
Power Options” in Chapter 3.

Component Description
1Caps lock light On: Caps lock is on.
2Num lock light On: Num lock or the numeric keypad is on.
3Wireless light On: An integrated wireless device has been
turned on (select models only).

3Wireless light On: An integrated wireless device has

Blinking: Notebook is in Standby.
5IDE (Integrated Drive
Electronics) light
On: Internal hard drive or optical drive
is being accessed.
6Battery light On: Battery pack is charging.
Blinking: Battery pack has reached a
low-battery condition.

2.0-compliant USB device.
3S-Video-out jack Connects an optional S-Video device,
such as a television, VCR, camcorder,
projector, or video capture card.
4External monitor port Connects an optional VGA external
monitor or projector.
5Security cable slot Attaches an optional security cable to
the notebook.

Exhaust vent Provides airflow to cool internal components.
ÄTo prevent overheating, do not obstruct
vents. Do not allow a hard surface, such
as a printer, or a soft surface, such as a
pillow, blanket, rug, or thick clothing, to
block airflow.

1USB port Connects an optional 1.1- or
2.0-compliant USB device.
2Audio-in (microphone) jack Connects an optional monaural
microphone.
3Audio-out (headphone) jack Connects optional headphones or
powered stereo speakers. Also
connects the audio function of an
audio/video device such as a television
or VCR.
4Optical drive* Supports an optical disc.
5Optical drive release button Opens the optical drive.
*The type of optical drive, such as a DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive, varies by
model.
