HP16500B Logic
Analysis System ?

TheHP16500B
TheHP16500B is the mainfram e ofthe Hewlett-Packard Logic
Analysis System . Itoffers a modularstru cture forplug-in cards with a
wide ran ge ofstate,timing,oscilloscope,and pattern generator
capabilities. This allow syou to configure the HP16500B using only
the m odulesyou need in orderto perform a desired m easurem entor
set ofm easurem ents,while giving you the flexibility to change or
update them later.
TheLogic Analysis System providesboth experienced and first-time
userswith powerfulm easurem entcapabilities. Thepop-up m enus
and colorgraphics lead you through setupsand m easurem ents quickly
and easily,withoutthe need to memorize a lotofsteps. Bytouching
the appropriate fieldsorusing the cursorofeitherthe optionalmouse
orkeyboard,you can perform functions,configure menus,and move
from one menuto another.
With the interm odule capabilities ofthe Logic Analysis System ,you
can makeinteractive m easurem ents betw een m odules. This allow s
you to configure modules to interactwith each other,using the
triggeringcapabilities ofone module and the acquisition capabilitiesof
another.
System Options
TheHP16501A is the add-on mainfram e forexpanding the m odule
capacity ofthe HP16500B. Whenthe HP16501A is connected to the
HP16500B,they function as a single ten-card system which is turned
on and controlled by the HP 16500B. TheHP16501A form sa tightly
coupled system with the HP16500B,perm itting each ofthetwo
mainfram es to arm ortriggerany module from any otherm odule.
AnoptionalLAN interface is available fordirect connection to
com puters located on an Ethernetlocalarea network(LA N ). The
LAN interface enablesyou to upload m easurem entdata forthe most
com prehensive post-processing needsand easy access to data files.

UserInterfaces
TheHP16500B hasfouruserinterface devices: th e knob on th e fron t panel,
th e touchscreen,the optionalmouse,and the optionalkeyboard.
Theknob on th e fron t panelis used to m ove th e cursoron certain m enus,
increm entordecrem entnum eric fields,and to rollthe display.
Thetouchscreen fieldscan be selected by touch orwith the optionalmouse
orkeyboard. Toactivate a field by touch,pressth e dark blue field on th e
display with yourfingeruntilthe field changes color. Then m ove yourfinger
aw ay from the screen to activate yourselection. You have th e option of
disabling the touchscreen with the front-panelTouch On/Offbutton.

Screen Contrastand Brightness
Screen contrast and brightness are adjusted by tu rn ing the twosm allknobs
located beneath th e Touch Screen button. Theleft knob is forbrightness and
th e rightknob is forcontrast.
DefaultConfigurations
Whenthe instrum entis powered up,predeterm ined valuesare au tom atically
assigned to th e differentfieldsofthe m enusto configure th e instru m en t for
basic m easurem ents. This allow s you to makea basic m easurem entby
tu rn ing on th e instrum ent,connecting the probes,and touching th e Run
field. Often,only minorchanges are needed formorecom plex m easurem ents.
Storing Default Configurations
Thedefault configurations m ay be stored on a disk forlateruse orreset by
cycling the power. Storing default configurations on a disk is a convenient
wayto return to th e defaultvalueswithoutcycling the pow er. Defaultvalues
foreach m odule can be stored separately ortogetherin one file.

TheSystem Configuration Menu
TheSystem Configuration m enu is the first m enu you see afterthe
initialpower-up ofthe instrum ent. This m enu lists the m odulesand
softwareoptions thatyoursystem is configured with and show s
whetherthere are five card slots (the HP 16500B alone)orten card
slots (the HP16500B with the optionalHP 16501A attached)
available. Italso show s ifeitherthe optionalmouseorkeyboard is
connected. Ifa mouseis connected,the system configuration menu
indicateswhetherthe mouseis connected directly to the HP16500B
orto a keyboard connected to the mainfram e. Finally,the system
configuration menugives you access to the configuration oftheHP-IB,
RS-232C,and optionalLAN interfaces.

Getting into the System Configuration M enus
In the upper-leftcorner ofth e m enu are tw o fieldsthatindicate the current
m enu and m odule. Thefield to the extrem e left(System ) show s you which
m odule you’re in and th e one to the rightofthe m odule field (C onfiguration)
show s you whatm enu with in th e m odule you’ve accessed.
Toaccess the System Configuration m enu,follow these steps:
1Ifthe m odule field in the upper-leftcornerofthe screen doesnot
display "System ,"selectthis field and whenthe pop-up appears,select
System. This willgetyou into one ofthe System m enus.
2Ifthe m odule field in the upper-leftcornerofthe screen displays
"System ,"butthe m enu field to the rightofSystem doesn’tdisplay
"Configuration,"selectthis field. Whenthe pop-up appears,select
Configuration to display the System Configuration menu.
