The Basic Adjustments Sub-Menu
Here is what the BASIC ADJUSTMENTS sub-menu contains:
CONTRAST To adjust the contrast (image white level), select this menu item.
Contrast is the difference in brightness between the dark and light
parts of the displayed image.
BRIGHTNESS To adjust the overall picture brightness (image black level), select this
menu item. Set the brightness so that the dark areas of the display
remain black.

menu item.
HEIGHT To adjust the height of the displayed image, select this menu item.
VERTICAL CENTERING To adjust the vertical position of the displayed image, select this menu

DEGAUSSING To degauss the display, select this menu item. If you always leave your
display switched on, it is recommended that you degauss at least every
week to remove any color impurities. Degaussing is accompanied by
brief instability of the displayed image and a brief humming sound.
CREATE DEFAULT ITEM To choose which setting is adjusted directly when you use the
buttons without displaying the on-screen menus, use this menu item.
You can choose from BRIGHTNESS, CONTRAST, and COLOR TEMP.

TILT CORRECTION To adjust the displayed image if it appears to be rotated, select this
menu item. Depending on the orientation of your display, for example,
whether it faces north or south, you may experience some rotation of
the image. This effect is due to the influence of the earth’s magnetic field
and is normal for all displays.
FACTORY PRESET SHAPE To return all of the shape settings to those set by the factory, select this
menu item.
Image Adjustments Sub-Menu
Here is what the IMAGE ADJUSTMENTS sub-menu contains:
CONTRAST See The Basic Adjustments Sub-Menu.
BRIGHTNESS See The Basic Adjustments Sub-Menu.
COLOR TEMP To change the factory preset color, select this menu item. The lower the
color temperature, the warmer the hue. The higher the color
temperature, the colder the hue. For example, choosing 5000 gives a
white with a reddish tinge, choosing 6500 gives a white which is close to
average daylight, choosing 9300 gives a white with a noticeable bluish
tinge. You can also set the color to your own preferences by using the
menu items RED, GREEN, BLUE, and CREATE CUSTOM IMAGE.

CAUTION Overcorrecting for the effects of horizontal or vertical moire may affect
the picture quality of your display.
CREATE CUSTOM IMAGE You can define two customized image settings. This enables you to
create different working environments for applications that require
different image settings. Text heavy applications require high color
temperatures (9300K); graphics intensive applications require a more
natural color setting (6500K).

Setting the Amount of Displayed Information
To set the amount of displayed information, change the screen
resolution of your PC. The higher the screen resolution, the more
information you can see on the screen. It is recommended that you use
a resolution of 1024 ×768 at 85Hz or 1280×1024 at 85Hz. This gives
easy-to-read characters, a large amount of displayed information, and a
flicker-free image.
To find out which resolutions are supported by your display, refer to
“Supported Video Modes” on page 15. To change the screen resolution,
please refer to the manual that came with your PC or your operating
system documentation, if necessary.
Your display has a Plug and Play capability (VESA DDC1/2B+
standard) that enables it to identify itself to suitably equipped HP
Vectra PCs. This will automatically give you the best refresh rate for
the resolution that you have set. Also, by using the appropriate
software (when available), you can adjust the display settings directly
from your PC.
Minimizing Eye Strain
To avoid screen flicker and minimize eye strain, use the highest
supported image refresh rate for the chosen resolution, for example
85Hz for 1280×1024. The image refresh rate is the number of times per
second that the image is refreshed.
mykonos.bk : mykon-us.fb4 Page 12 Monday, November 25, 1996 5:41 PM

English 13
HP D2840A User’s Guide
Using the Display
To find out which image refresh rates are supported by your display,
refer to “Supported Video Modes” on page 15. To set the image refresh
rate (also known as the vertical frequency), refer to the manual that
came with your PC or your operating system documentation, if
necessary. If your PC supports Plug and Play, it will automatically
select the best refresh rate for the screen resolution you have set.
Minimizing Energy Consumption
If your PC supports VESA display power management (available on
many HP Vectra PCs), you can minimize the power consumed by the
display. There are two power saving modes:
•Standby mode1(uses less than 30W). In this mode, the display’s
front panel indicator light is green.
•Sleep mode2(uses less than 1W). In this mode, the display’s front
panel indicator light is green blinking.
To set these power saving modes, refer to the manual that came with
your PC. If your screen is not displaying an image, check the front
panel indicator light first — your display may be in a power saving
mode.
1. Standby mode is activated when vertical sync is cut by the video controller.
2. Sleep mode is activated when both vertical and horizontal sync are cut by the video controller.

Care and Cleaning
16 English
Care and Cleaning
Do not place anything on top of the display. Doing so may block the
display vents and cause damage to the display due to overheating.
Do not let liquid get on or into the display.
To maximize screen life and prevent damage to the picture tube (such
as burned phosphor due to leaving the same image on the screen for a
long time), it is recommended that you:
•Use the display power management system (on HP Vectra PCs) or a
screen saver program.
•Avoid setting contrast and brightness to their maximum levels for
prolonged periods.
•If you do not have a power management system or a screen saver
program, switch the display off or reduce the brightness and contrast
to minimum levels when the display is not in use.
Your display is automatically demagnetized each time it is switched on.
This ensures color quality. To maintain color quality during use or after
turning or moving your display, use the degauss option. Refer to
“DEGAUSSING“ on page 9.
Your display has an anti-glare, anti-static screen coating. To prevent
damage to the display screen’s coating, use a regular household glass
cleaner when cleaning the screen. To clean the screen:
1Switch the display off and remove the power plug (pull the plug, not
the cable).
2Wet a soft cotton cloth with the cleaning solution and gently wipe the
screen. Do not spray cleaner onto the screen because the cleaner
may drip inside the display.
3Dry with a clean, soft cotton cloth.
Do not use cleaning solutions containing fluoride, acids, or alkalis.

Hardware Warranty
This HP display is covered by a limited hardware warranty for a period
of three years from the date of purchase by the original end-user. The
service provided includes on-site service during the first year of
purchase, and for the following two years, return to an HP or
repair-authorized reseller service-center.
The above warranty shall not apply to defects resulting from: misuse
(including “burned” screens); unauthorized modification; operation or
storage outside the environmental specifications for the product; or
in-transit damage. A defective display will be — at HP’s option —
either repaired or replaced with a new or as-new unit of the same or
equivalent model.
Please refer to the warranty statement provided with your HP Vectra
personal computer for customer responsibilities and other terms and
conditions.
Environmental Information
HP has a strong commitment toward the environment. Your HP display
has been designed to respect the environment as much as possible.
HP can also take back your old display for recycling when it reaches
the end of its useful life.
In fact, HP has a product take-back program in several countries. The
collected equipment is sent to of HP’s recycling facilities in Europe or
the USA. As many parts as possible are reused. The remainder is
recycled. Special care is taken for batteries and other potentially toxic
substances, which are reduced to non-harmful components through a
special chemical process. If you require more details about HP’s
product take-back program, contact your dealer or your nearest HP
Sales Office.
The cathode ray tube used in this display does not contain cadmium.
