Important Safety Instructions
WARNING For your safety always connect equipment to a grounded wall outlet.
Always use a power cord with a properly grounded plug, such as the
one provided with the equipment, or one in compliance with your
national safety standards. This equipment can be disconnected from
the power by removing the power cord from the power outlet. This
means the equipment must be located close to an easily accessible
power outlet.
To avoid electrical shock, do not open the monitor's cover. There are
no user-serviceable parts inside. Only qualified service personnel
should service these parts.
Make sure your PC is powered off before connecting or
disconnecting a display peripheral.

To optimize your comfort and productivity, it's important that you
set up your work area correctly and use your HP equipment properly.
With that in mind, we have developed some setup and use
recommendations for you to follow ased on esta lished ergonomic
principles.

CAUTION The monitor is quite heavy (the weight is shown in the technical
specifications). We recommend you ask the assistance of a second
person when lifting or moving it.
The lightning flash with arrowhead sym ol, situated within an
equilateral triangle, is intended to alert the user to the presence of
uninsulated "dangerous voltage" which may e of sufficient magnitude
to constitute a risk of electric shock.
The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle is intended to
alert the user to the presence of important operating and servicing
instructions in the literature accompanying the appliance.

What Your New Monitor Offers
What Your New Monitor Offers
Your HP monitor is a perfectly flat 17-inch CRT (16-inch viewa le
image), high resolution, multi-synchronous color monitor. Multi-
synchronous means that the monitor supports a range of video
modes. It is optimized for use with all Hewlett-Packard computers.
Your HP color monitor has the following features:
• A 17-inch perfectly flat screen with an 16-inch viewa le image.
0.25mm (diagonal) dot pitch for excellent graphics and an anti-
glare coating to minimize reflection.
• Supports video modes up to 1280 x 1024 at 75 Hz refresh rates.
• Image adjustment using on-screen display menus. Includes color
temperature adjustment and image manipulation controls to
optimize the quality and position of the image.
• Monitor power management system (VESA1 standard) controlled
from suita ly equipped HP computers to automatically reduce the
power consumption of the monitor. As an ENERGY STAR2 partner,
HP has determined that this product meets the ENERGY STAR
guidelines for energy efficiency.
• Monitor Plug and Play capa ility (VESA DDC1/2B standard) that
ena les the monitor to identify itself to suita ly equipped HP
computers.
• Compliance with ISO 9241-3/-7/-8 ergonomic standards.
• Complies with MPRII guidelines for upper limits of electrostatic
and magnetic field emissions, from the Swedish National Board for

Setting Up Your Monitor
Where to Place the Monitor
Place your monitor on a flat sturdy surface. Ensure the operating site
is free from excessive heat, moisture, and sources of electromagnetic
fields. Sources of electromagnetic fields include transformers, motors
and other monitors.
Connecting the Cables
1 Before you connect any ca les, refer to the safety instructions at
the eginning of this manual.
2 Make sure your computer and monitor are switched off.
3 Connect the video ca le (it has a 15-pin plug) to the video outlet
on your computer. Tighten the thum screws on the plug.
4 Connect the power cord to the monitor.
5 Plug the power cord into the power outlet.
NOTE The location of your computer's video ca le connector may e
different to the one shown. Refer to the manual that came with your
computer, if necessary.

In order to take advantage of the Plug & Play functionality of your
Windows 95/98/2000 operating systems, you can download your HP
Monitor driver from the following HP we site:

To install this driver follow these steps:

3 Click on Settings ta .
4 Click on Advanced... and select the Monitor ta .
5 Click on Change... in order to select the model of the HP Monitor
you are using.
6 Click on Have Disk...
7 Click on Browse... to find the HP monitor driver that you
downloaded on to your hard disk drive, and click on K.
8 Select your monitor type in the Models ox and click on K to install
the selected monitor.

Using Your Monitor
1Press the Menu utton to activate the on-screen display (OSD).
2Use the Menu selection and Adjustment uttons to scroll to the menu
item you require. To choose a menu item press the Enter utton.
3To adjust the setting of your chosen menu item, use the Menu
selection and Adjustment uttons. Your settings are automatically
saved.
4Press the Exit utton to exit the on-screen display.
Refer to the ta le on the next page for a description of menu items.
You can directly access the rightness and contrast menu y
pressing the adjustment utton which shows the rightness and
contrast icon.
Your monitor is automatically demagnetized each time it is switched
on. This ensures color purity. To maintain color purity, we
recommend that each week you switch the monitor off for at least 30
minutes. If the power management function of your computer is
working properly, you do not need to switch the monitor off or on.

Your monitor allows you to easily adjust the characteristics of the
image eing displayed. All of these adjustments are made using the
control uttons on the front of the monitor. These uttons operate
the on-screen menu, which shows you the monitor’s settings and
allows you to change those settings.
NOTE Allow the monitor to sta ilize for at least 30 minutes efore making
image adjustment.
Menu Features
The Menu features allow you to adjust the quality of the picture using
your monitor’s On-Screen menu facility.
When you have finished making adjustments to a setting, press the
Menu utton to return to the Main Menu, then press Menu again to turn
off the On-Screen Display.

to adjust the trapezoid settings

Parallelogram The Parallelogram parameter allows
you to adjust the parallelogram
setting when the picture is leaning
left or right.

Rotation The Rotation parameter allows you
to adjust the rotation setting when

V-Linearity The V-Linearity parameter allows you
to adjust the linearity setting when
the picture is compressed at the top
or ottom.
1In the Geometry menu, press

V-Linearity, then press the

V-Linearity adjustment OSD.
2Use the - and + uttons for
vertical linearity adjustments
LANGUAGE
The Languages parameter allows you
to change the language used in the
menu. The language chosen only
affects the language used in OSDs.
It has no effect on any software
running on the computer.
1Press the Menu utton.
2Press the - or + uttons to
highlight Language, then press
the utton to display the
Language adjustment OSD.
3Use the - and + uttons to
select the language you would
like to use. You can choose
one of nine languages
(English, French, Portuguese,
Italian, Spanish, German,
Russian, Swedish, or Korean).

The Advanced parameter allows you
to access the following parameters:
H-Moire, V-Moire, Video Input Level,
Color Temperature and Halftone.

H-Moire The Horizontal Moire (H-Moire)
parameter allows you to correct
your picture’s horizontal moire
pattern.
1In the Advanced menu, press

H-Moire adjustment OSD.

adjust the picture.
V-Moire The Vertical Moire (V-Moire) parameter
allows you to correct your picture’s
vertical moire pattern.

Video Input Level Some video cards use video signals
higher than 0.7 V which causes the
display to e very right. The
normal level used for most PC’s is
0.7 V. The Video Input Level
parameter allows you to select the
level that is est suited to your
computer’s video card.
1In the Advanced menu, press
the - or + uttons to highlight
Video Input Level, then press the
utton to display the
Video Input Level adjustment
OSD.
2Use the - and + uttons to
select 0.7V or 1.0V.
Color Temperature The Color Temperature is a measure of
the “warmth” of the image colors.
The availa le range is from -6500 to
9300K.
This parameter allows you to adjust
individual R, G, B color control

Color Temperature, then press
the utton to display the
Color Temperature adjustment
OSD.

function.

DEGAUSS
The Degauss parameter allows you
to remove color impurities caused
y magnetic fields. Do not use the
Degauss feature more than once
within a 30-minute period.
1 Press the Menu utton.
2 Press the - or + uttons to
highlight Degauss, then press the
utton to execute the
Degauss function.
3 The degaussing OSD will appear.
After a few seconds the Degauss
main menu will return.
NOTE During degauss the monitor may uzz momentarily,
the image colors may change and the image will
ecome distorted for a few seconds. Theses effects are
normal
RECALL
The Recall parameter allows you to
reset the following monitor settings
to their original levels: H-Position,
V-Position, Size, Pincushion, Tr a p e z o i d ,
Parallelogram, Pinbalance, Rotation, V-
Linearity, H-Moire and V-Moire.
1Press the Menu utton.
2Press the - or + uttons to
highlight Recall, then press the
utton to display the
Recall selection OSD.
3Use the + utton to select Ye s .
If you do not want to reset the
monitor, use the - utton to
select No.

NOTE If you have selected Ye s all settings listed a ove will e
reset. All other settings will remain the same.
CAUTION This operation resets all of the data in the user memory area.
If this occurs, you must remake your user adjustments.
DISPLAY TIMING The Display Timing parameter allows
you to display your monitor’s
settings.
1Press the Menu utton.
2Press the - or + uttons to
highlight Display Timing.
SD L CK/UNL CK
The Control Lock allows you to
protect adjustment data y locking
controls. You can unlock the OSD
controls at any time y using the
same procedure.
Press and hold the utton for 10
seconds or more to Lock or to Unlock.

Minimizing Eye Strain
To avoid screen flicker and minimize eye strain, use the highest
supported image refresh rate for the chosen resolution. It is
recommended that you use a refresh rate of 85 Hz. The image refresh
rate is the num er of times per second that the image is refreshed.
Minimizing Energy Consumption
If your computer supports VESA monitor power management
(availa le on many HP computers), you can minimize the power
consumed y the monitor. There are two power saving modes:
• Suspend mode1 (uses less than 3W). In this mode, the monitor's
front panel indicator light is am er.
• Active off mode2 (uses less than 3W). In this mode, the monitor's
front panel indicator light is am er.
To set these power saving modes, refer to the manual that came with
your computer. If your screen is not displaying an image, check the
front panel indicator light first as your monitor may e in a power
saving mode.
Supported Video Modes
Your monitor comes with the standard modes shown in the ta le
elow. It also supports intermediate video modes. With the
intermediate modes, the displayed image may need to e optimized
y accessing the OSD using the uttons on the front panel. All modes
are non-interlaced.

The recommended mode for your HP Monitor is 1024 x 768, at
85 Hz.
1. Suspend mode is activated when vertical sync is cut y the video controller.
2. Active off mode is activated when oth vertical and horizontal sync are cut y the video
controller.

Moiré
Moiré is a type of natural interference which produces soft or wavy
lines on your screen. It may appear due to interference etween the
regulated pattern of the picture from the input signal and the
phosphor pitch pattern of the CRT. Refer to “H-Moire” or “V-Moire”
on page 12.
Self-Test Feature Check (STFC)
Your monitor provides a self test feature that allows you to check
whether your monitor is functioning properly. If your monitor and
computer are properly connected ut the monitor screen remains
dark and the power indicator is linking, run the monitor self-test y
performing the following steps:
1 Turn off oth your computer and the monitor.
2 Unplug the video ca le from the ack of the computer.
3 Turn on the monitor.
If the monitor is functioning properly, you will see a lue ox with
a red order and inside as shown in the following illustration:
The three oxes inside the order are red, green and lue. Failure
of any of the oxes to appear indicates a pro lem with your
monitor. This ox also appears during normal operation if the
video ca le ecomes disconnected or damaged.
