HP zl2 Module Quick Setup Guide
The module drawings in this document are for illustration purposes only and may not match your module.
1. Load the most current switch software that 
supports your module. See Specifications.
2. Prepare for installation
To avoid personal injury or product damage, review the
“Installation precautions” on page 2.
3. Install the modules into a switch slot
The switch can be either powered on or off.
2 Open extractor handles
Close the extractor handles to seat the
module, and tighten the retaining
screws until just snug.
1 Insert module into the
guides and slideit in until
it is fully inserted.

4. Install optional transceivers
mini-GBIC or SFP
transceiver or SFP+
Warning: Avoid direct eye exposure to the beam
coming from the transmit port.
5. Verify self-test
1 Fault and Test LEDs = Off 2 Module Status LEDs = On
6. Connect network cables
Connect a fiber cable
7. Verify network connections
See the Installation and Getting Started Guide for your
module. For example, a module with a standard RJ-45 LAN
port is illustrated in the following illustration.
Link and Mode LED
Note: Operation of each port’s Link and Mode
LEDs depends on the switch’s Mode selection.
For information on LED behavior, see the HP
5400R zl2 Installation and Getting Started Guide.
8. (Optional) Customize the configuration for the
modules’ ports
If the default port configuration is not appropriate for your
network application, configure the port(s) in the module by
using the switch console or the web browser interface. See
the HP 5400R zl2 Installation and Getting Started Guide for
information about connecting a console, and see the
Management and Configuration Guide for information
about configuring the switch and its ports.
For module documentation, go to the HP Networking website
at: 
www.hp.com/networking/support.
Auto search on “zl modules,” and select your module from the
list. Click Display selected, and then click on the links that
have Manuals listed to get on to the webpage that lists the
available manuals.

Installation guidelines
To avoid personal injury or product damage when installing your switch, read the following installation precautions and
guidelines.
Installation precautions
• Static electricity can severely damage the electronic components on the modules. When handling and installing the
modules in your switch, follow these procedures to avoid damage from static electricity:
• Handle the module by its bulkhead or edges. Avoid touching the components, and the circuitry on the board.
• When installing the module, equalize any static charge difference between your body and the switch by wearing a
grounding wrist strap and attach it to the switch’s metal body, or by frequently touching the switch’s metal body.
• HP zl2 Modules have “low-force”, high-performance connectors. High insertion forces are not necessary to install the
modules, and should not be used.
•Ensure you fully insert the modules. That is, press the module into the slot until the bulkhead on the module is
contacting or is very close to contacting the front face of the switch chassis.
• For safe operation, proper switch cooling, and reduction of electromagnetic emissions, ensure that a slot cover is
installed on any unused module slot. For safety, no more than one slot should be uncovered at a time when the switch
is powered on.
• Ensure you check the temperature specifications for each module that will be installed into the chassis as different
modules may have different temperature requirements.
• For additional precautions, see the Installation and Getting Started Guide for your module. For the latest version, visit
the HP Networking Web site at www.hp.com/networking/support.
For additional Safety and Regulatory information, see the HP 5400R zl2 Quick Start Guide and Safety/Regulatory Information
document included with your module.
