Preface
Introduction
The HP NetServer LXr 8000 is an Intel-CPU based network server that
can use up to 8 GB of memory. This memory is situated on two boards
that communicate with the rest of the NetServer via the midplane
connector.
Each memory board can hold up to 4 GB of memory, arranged in four
banks of four buffered DIMMs. These DIMMs can be 64 MB or 256
MB, 50 ns EDO memory.
The standard configuration of memory is 256 MB on the primary (right)
board, as four 64 MB DIMMs in slots J1 through J4. Add memory four
DIMMs at a time. If you use both boards, each must have the same type
and number of DIMMs in the same slots.

This guide tells how to:
• Remove and reinstall the HP NetServer LXr 8000 memory board
for a memory upgrade
• Install DIMMs in the specified interleave configuration on the
memory board
• Remove DIMMs and downsize the memory configuration

Tools You Need
To install this accessory kit, you need the following tools:
•An anti-static service kit (3M8501/8502/8503 or equivalent).
This kit includes a static-dissipating work surface, a chassis clip
lead, and a wrist strap.

1 Preparing for Installation
Verify Contents
CAUTION Do not remove the DIMM from its bag until you are
ready to install it. Make sure the bag remains sealed.
The DIMM is sensitive to humidity, so desiccant has
been packed in the bag containing the DIMM. When
the DIMM has been installed and the HP NetServer is
running, it is no longer sensitive to humidity.
Unpack the shipping box and verify that you received the contents listed
below for the Memory Upgrade Kit.
The upgrade kit includes:
•Four DIMM memory modules, either 64 MB or 256 MB buffered
EDO DIMMs (50 ns)

•HP Navigator CD-ROM. You are not required to use the HP
Navigator CD-ROM to reconfigure your system after installing
memory. However, we recommend that you use it to ensure that
you have the latest drivers and information.

Prepare for Installation
Gather the tools and the setup information you need before beginning the
conversion. Locate the HP NetServer where there will be sufficient space
to remove the bezel and add memory easily.

2 Installing Memory and Memory
Boards
Memory Configuration Guidelines
The HP NetServer accepts one or two memory boards. You remove and
insert the boards through the front of the server. The boards sit
horizontally in two side-by-side bays, and plug into connectors on the
server’s midplane board.
Each memory board supports four-way interleaving between its own
DIMMs. There can also be board-to-board interleaving if both boards are
populated identically. For four-way or board-to-board interleaving to take
place, you must follow the DIMM population guidelines set forth later in
this section.
Both boards are physically identical, but the board in the right-hand bay
acts as the primary memory board. This board must always be populated
with at least four DIMMs. The board in the left-hand bay acts as the
secondary memory board, and need not be populated for the system
to run.

NOTE Keep both memory boards in the HP NetServer during
operation, even if the secondary board has no DIMMs.
The empty board acts as a terminator for the memory
board slot.

A memory board has 16 DIMM sockets and accepts 64 MB or 256 MB
buffered EDO DIMMs (50 ns). Each board has a maximum capacity of
4 GB when fully populated with 256 MB DIMMs. The minimum memory
configuration is four 64 MB DIMMs on the main memory board (in slots
J1, J2, J3, and J4).
Figure 2-2 shows a memory board and a DIMM fitting into a slot on the
board.

The standard configuration of memory is 256 MB on the primary board,
as four 64 MB DIMMs in slots J1 through J4 (shown in Figure 2-2
above). Add memory four DIMMs at a time. If you use both boards, both
must have the same type and number of DIMMs in the same slots. For
example, if you have filled one board with sixteen 64 MB DIMMs, and
want to add more memory, you will need to move 4 DIMMs to the
second board, then add another 8 DIMMs to it, so that each board has 12
DIMMs.
Figure 2-3 shows the layout of a 4 GB Memory Board. Each board’s 16
DIMM slots are divided into four banks of four slots.

Observe these guidelines when adding memory:
•Add (or remove) DIMMs to the memory board in groups of
four. Each group of four DIMMs must fill one bank on a
memory board. A bank must be either fully populated or
completely empty. See Figure 2-3.
•When populating a memory board, fill Bank A first, then
Bank B, then Bank C, and finally Bank D. You must do this if a
board is to have four-way interleaving.
•All DIMMs within a bank must be identical in size and speed.
A bank must contain either all 64 MB DIMMs or all 256 MB
DIMMs.
•Banks of 64 MB DIMMs and 256 MB DIMMs can coexist on
the same memory board.
•The minimum memory configurationis four 64 MB DIMMs
in one bank on the primary (right-hand) memory board, and
no DIMMs on the left-hand board. When the system has two
memory boards but only four DIMMs, all four DIMMs must be on
the primary memory board. (The left-hand, secondary board must
always be in the system, even if it does not hold a DIMMs.)
•For board-to-board interleaving, each memory board must
hold the same number of DIMMs. If one board holds two types
of DIMMs, the other board must also, and in the same banks. (For

example, if one memory board holds eight 256 MB DIMMs in
Banks A and B and eight 64MB DIMMs in Banks C and D, the
other board must match this configuration exactly if card-to-card
interleaving is to take place.)
NOTE There is no special order for interspersing banks of 64
MB and 256 MB DIMMs on memory boards. Any
arrangement is allowed.
Board-to-board interleaving offers enhanced performance, and is
recommended. Figures 2-4 through 2-7 show memory configurations for
eight, 16, 24, and 32 DIMMs using two interleaved memory boards. The
diagram assumes that corresponding banks on each board both hold the
same size of DIMM module.
