This Road Map is for the person who installs, administers, and troubleshoots LAN servers. Hewlett-Packard Company assumes you
are qualified in the servicing of computer equipment and trained in recognizing hazards in products with hazardous energylevels.
Audience Assumptions
1Verify Contents
1. Connect the monitor, keyboard and mouse to the HP NetServer. Connect the power
cords for the HP NetServer and the monitor. Attach the NetServer power cord to the
power cord retainer on the back of the HP NetServer.
If you are installing a monochrome monitor, you must change a jumper setting on the
system board. See the for information.
2. If you have a UPS, install and turn on the UPS. Use the supplied serial cable to connect
the UPS to the HP NetServer. Refer to the user’s guide included with the UPS for
additional information.
3. Plug the power cords for the HP NetServer and monitor into a power outlet and turn
them both on.
4. Insert the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and press the
Reset button on the front of the server. The HP NetServer automatically boots from the
HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM.
If an error message appears, ignore it and press the F1 key. If an error message
appears in Configuration Assistant, press F10 to continue.
5. Go to the HP NetServer Navigator Main Menu. If the language needs to be changed,
select "Set Preferences."
6. Select "Readme File."
7. If you are installing options, youwill need to remove the cover. Go to Step 3: "Remove
the Cover." If you are not installing options, go to Step 7: "Configure the HP NetServer
and Install Additional ISA Boards."

3Remove the Cover
If you are installing options, youwill need to remove the cover.
Tools you will need:
Flat 1/4-inch screwdriver and T15 TORX® driver
Antistatic service kit (3M® 8501/8502/8505 or equivalent). The kit includes a
static-dissipating work surface, chassis clip lead, and wrist strap

1. Turn off the NetServer and disconnect the power cord.
2. Unlock the cover using the key in the key bag.
3. Loosen the five mounting screws on the back of the HP NetServer.
4. Slide the cover forward 2 inches (5 cm) and then lift it straight up.
WARNING Before removing the cover, always disconnect the power cord and
unplug telephone cables. Disconnect telephone cables to avoid
exposure to shock hazard from telephone ringing voltages.
Disconnect the power cord to avoid exposure to high energy levels
that may cause burns when parts are short-circuited by metal
objects such as tools or jewelry.
CAUTION Wear a wrist strap and use a static-dissipating work surface
connected to the chassis when handling components. Key

missing or damaged, call your reseller.

HP NetServer Navigator CD Release History
To ensure that you have the latest versions of the software, obtain the current Release History. This report describes major software
updates to each release of the HP Navigator CD-ROM and instructions for obtaining a current release.

1. Remove the processor board.
2. Align the notches on the DIMM with the keys on
the socket.
3. Insert the DIMM until the retaining clips snap
into place.
4. Reinstall the processor board.

NOTE Do not install ISA boards until instructed by the
Configuration Assistant program in Step 7: Configure
the HP NetServer and Install AdditionalISA Boards.
1. Read the documentation included with each board. Look
for any special instructions and refer to the Accessory
Board Installation Recommendations.
2. If necessary, remove the board retainer.
3. Remove the slot cover for the slot.
4. Install the board.

Install the optimal PCI performance board (either Network Interface Card or
SCSI controller) in PCI 9.
Install the EISA SCSI controller in slot 3 to ease the routing of cables.

CD-ROM drive with bootable CD-ROM
Flexible disk drive with bootable flexible disk
IDE drive
EISA or ISA controller set to BIOS address C8000 (To boot from an EISA or
ISA controller, set the BIOS address to C8000. Other controllers must have
BIOS disabled or addresses set at the end of the D0000 range.)
PCI controller (embedded SCSI A, PCI slots in the following order: 9, 8, 7,
and 6. The PCI boot priority order can be changed so that PCI slots precede
SCSI A.
Set BIOS addresses, disable BIOSes and change PCI boot priority order
using the EISA Configuration Utility in Step 7: "Configure the HP NetServer
and Install Additional ISA Boards."

6Install Additional Mass Storage Devices
NOTE In certain configurations, if you are installing an IDE drive or SCSI
devices you will need additional cables or adapters. For
configuration information, see the Technical Information Label on
the side of the chassis, or Information Assistant on the HP
Navigator CD-ROM.
For part numbers for HP cables, adapters, and trays, see the
Technical Information Labels on the top and side of chassis.
Shelves 3 and 4:
A SCSI device, IDE device, or flexible disk drive can be
installed in these two shelves.
If you are installing a narrow (50-pin) SCSI device in one
of these shelves, it can be cabled with the CD-ROM in
Shelf 2.
If you are installing a SCSI device, set the jumpers on the
device to an unused SCSI ID (the CD-ROM drive is set to
SCSI ID 5.) Do not terminate the device if using the HP
cable—the cable includes a terminator.
All devices must be installed in mass storage trays.
Hot Swap Subsystem:
All devices must be installed in hot-swap trays.
Unlock the hot swap subsystem using the same key used
to unlock the NetServer cover. The key is located in the
keybag attached to the rear of the HP NetServer.
Cabling configuration diagrams of the hot swap
subsystem are shown on the Technical Information Label
on the side of the chassis and in Information Assistant.

7Configure the HP NetServer and
Install Additional ISA Boards
NOTE Do not install ISA boards until instructed by
the Configuration Assistant program.
1. Reassemble the HP NetServer and connect the power cord.
2. Turn on the HP NetServer and monitor.
3. If the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM is not loaded in the
CD-ROM drive, insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive now
and press the Reset button on the front of the server. The HP
NetServer automatically boots from the HP NetServer
Navigator CD-ROM.
If an error message appears, ignore it and press the F1 key. If
an error message appears in Configuration Assistant, press
F10 to continue.
4. Go to the HP NetServer Navigator Main Menu and select
“ConfigurationAssistant."
5. If you have installed all accessories except the
ISA boards, go to the Express Configuration Menu. Follow the
instructions on the screen to configure your HP NetServer.
You are finished with the Installation Road Map. Follow the
instructions in Configuration Assistant to continue your
NetServer installation.
Recommended:
NOTE If you are installing one accessory at a time, go to the
Custom Configuration Menu and select the Help
button. Follow the instructions on the screen to
configure your HP NetServer. Repeat configuration
process for each accessory.
