Description
This document describes VMware operating system connectivity support for HP StorageWorks
3000/5000 Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA3000/5000) controller software.

Under storage,clickDisk Storage Systems, and then select either HP StorageWorks 3000 Enterprise
Virtual Array or HP StorageWorks 5000 Enterprise Virtual Array under EVA Disk Arrays.

VMware Workstation 5
VMware GSX and VMware Workstation software products run as an
application on Microsoft and Linux operating systems. These applications are
storage independent and leverage our standard operating system support
offerings.
NOTE:
VMware HBA drivers are embedded in the ESX system software.
Enhancements
The following are major enhancements included in this release:
•This release includes support for EVA3000/5000 controller software VCS 4.100. For details about
VCS 4.100, see HP StorageWorks 3000/5000 Enterprise Virtual Array release notes (VCS 4.100).

NOTE:
You must have VCS 3.028 installed before upgrading to VCS 4.00x or later. HP recommends that
you do a full system backup before an HP service representative performs the migrating procedure.
Prerequisites
Multiple-path support
VMware operating software includes multipath support. No additional software is required to achieve
high-availability, multipath capability.
For detailed VMware multipathing information, see the description of the vmkmultipath command in
the ESX server administrator’s guide.
NOTE:
Secure Path and other MPIO software are not supported with VMware.

VCS 3.028 to VCS 4.00x migration
The Active/Active failover feature in VCS 4.00x impacts host configurations. Contact your HP service
representative to configure your system and perform the migration procedure.
Compatibility/interoperability
This release provides full support for all previous EVA controller software used in an existing SAN
configuration.
Host type for VMware
To ensure smooth system operation with VCS 4.00x or later, set the host type to VMware.Seethe
VMware connectivity for the 3000/5000 Enterprise Virtual Array installation and reference guide for
more information.
Switch support
This release supports the Fibre Channel (FC) switches and firmware versions listed in the HP StorageWorks
SAN design reference guide, available for download on the HP support website:

Under storage,clickStorage Networking, and then select HP StorageWorks SAN under HP StorageWorks
SAN Solutions.
NOTE:
HP recommends that you
not mix switch firmware versions in your storage area network (SAN). It is a
best practice to uniformly upgrade all switches in the SAN.

HP StorageWorks Storage System Scripting Utility
The latest version of the Storage System Scripting Utility (SSSU) is available on the software downloads
HP website:
http://www.hp.com/support/downloads
Under storage,click Storage Software, and then select HP StorageWorks Command View EVA under
Storage Device Management Software. Select the version of the HP StorageWorks Command View EVA.
NOTE:
The SSSU cannot run from an ESX or a GSX server. You must use a server running an SSSU-supported
guest Virtual Machine operating software, such as Windows® or Linux®.
Avoiding problem situations
The following sections describe problems that may arise and their solutions.
SSSU
Changing comments on a disk enclosure
Use HP Command View EVA to change comments on a disk enclosure. If you try to change a disk
enclosure comment using SSSU, the following error message appears:

Changing the name of a disk enclosure
Changing the name of a disk enclosure is not supported with SSSU or HP Command View EVA. If you try
to change a disk enclosure name using SSSU, the following error message appears:
Error: Invalid Operation
Host considerations
This section contains information and important reminders about the host server.
ProLiant BIOS with multiple HBAs
IfyouhaveaProLiantserverwithoneormoreHBAsinstalled,youmustchangetheMPSTableMode
setting in the BIOS; otherwise, the system may not be able to detect all attached devices.
To change the setting:
1. Press F1 to access the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) during power-on self-test (POST).
Thistypicallyoccursafter5iDiskArrayinitialization.
2. Select System Options > OS Selection > Windows.
3. Select Advanced Options > MPS Table Mode.
4. Select FULL TABLE APIC.
5. Press Esc twice, and then press F10 to save the configuration.
