HP ProCurve Switch 4000M/8000M
Replacement Fan Tray
The HP ProCurve 4000M and 8000M switches have a replaceable fan tray. The instruc-
tions in this booklet will guide you through the process of replacing the fan tray in
your switch.
Before proceeding, make sure you read the Fan Tray Installation Precautions below.
Included Parts. The following parts should be included in your fan tray replacement
kit:
●the Replacement Fan Tray assembly (5092-0373)
●HP ProCurve Switch 4000M/8000M Replacement Fan Tray Installation
Guide (5990-3078), this guide
Tools Needed. To complete these procedures you need only a Torx T-10 screwdriver
or a flat bladed screwdriver.
Fan Tray Installation Precautions
Follow these precautions when installing your HP Switch 4000M/8000M Replace-
ment Fan Tray:
Warnings
●Make sure that all AC power is disconnected from the switch
before starting the procedures described in this guide. Do not
reconnect the power until the switch is completely reassembled
and cover plates are replaced on any open module slots or power
supply bays.
●If your switch is rack mounted, make sure that the rack is not going
to tip over as you complete these procedures. If the switch is
difficult to reach, remove it from the rack or other mounting
location before proceeding.
Cautions
●When handling the switch modules, the fan tray, and the fan tray connec-
tor, do not touch the components or edge connectors on any printed
circuit boards, or the pins on any connectors. Otherwise, damage due to
static discharge could occur.
●Refer to the installation guides that came with your switch and switch
power supply for precautions on proper handling and installation of the
switch and power supplies. For copies of the installation guides, visit the

Installing the Replacement Fan Tray
Overview
The installation steps are:
1. Disconnect all AC power from the switch and remove any power supplies and
cover plates.
2. On the front of the switch, mark or otherwise note the location of the network
cables attached to the network modules in switch slots A and B so that you can
reconnect the cables to the correct ports at the end of this procedure. Then,
disconnect all network cables from modules that are installed in slots A and B
on the front of the switch.
Alternatively, if you have sufficient slack in the cables, you can leave the network
cables connected to the modules as you complete the next step.
3. Remove the Management module and any modules that you have installed in
slots A and B. (Remember which module is located in which slot).
4. Remove the old fan tray assembly.
5. Install the Replacement Fan Tray.
6. Reinstall the Management module into its slot and the network modules into
their previous positions in slots A and B. (Make sure you do not overtighten the
screws on the modules.)
7. If you disconnected the network cables in step 2, reconnect the cables to the
correct ports on the network modules.
8. On the back of the switch, reinstall the power supply or supplies and cover plates.
9. Reconnect the AC power to the power supplies.
10. Verify that the switch is operating correctly by observing the LEDs on the front
of the switch.

Fan Tray Installation Steps
Follow these steps to install the replacement fan tray into the back of the Switch 4000M
or 8000M:
1. Disconnect AC power and remove power supplies and back cover plates.
2. Mark and disconnect the network cables on modules in slots A and B.
On the front of the switch, mark or otherwise note the location of the network
cables attached to the network modules in switch slots A and B so that you can
reconnect the cables to the correct ports at the end of this procedure. Then,
disconnect all network cables from modules that are installed in slots A and B
on the front of the switch.
Alternatively, if you have sufficient slack in the cables, you can leave the network
cables connected to the modules as you complete the next step.
3. Remove the Management module and any modules that you have
installed in slots A and B.
On the back of the switch, dis-
connect all AC power. Then,
loosen the 4 screws holding in
each power supply or cover
plate, and remove the power
supplies and cover plates
Loosen the two screws holding
in each module, and use the
screws to slide the modules
out. Remember which module
is located in which slot.
Caution: When handling the mod-
ules, do not touch the components
on the module boards or the edge
connectors. Otherwise, damage
due to static discharge could
occur.

4. Remove the old fan tray assembly. Follow these steps:
a. Through the opening in
the front of the switch,
where the modules used
to be, reach in and discon-
nect the fan tray cable
from the switch back-
plane.
Caution: Avoid damage to
the pins on the backplane
connector by pulling the
cableconnectorstraightout.
Do not pull on the cable
itself.
b. Through the opening in the back of the switch, loosen the two screws holding
up the fan tray.
c. Pivot the fan tray away from the switch chassis and then pull it out from the
switch. (Make sure the fan tray cable is not hindered anywhere.)
Disconnect the old fan
tray cable from the
switch backplane.
Loosen the two screws.

5. Install the Replacement Fan Tray. Follow these steps:
a. Insert the new fan tray into the back of the switch so that it matches the position
of the old tray. (The tabs that stick out from the sides of the switch chassis fit
into the slots in the corners of the fan tray, as shown in the illustration.)
b. Make sure the fan tray cable connector is on the front side of the switch
backplane, and then pivot the fan tray upward.

b. Install and tighten the two screws that hold the fan tray in place. (Make sure
you do not overtighten the screws.).
Caution: Make sure you do not leave any loose screws or other
foreign material inside the chassis.
c. From the front of the switch, reach into the opening made by the removed
modules and connect the fan tray cable to the white 9-pin connector on the
switch mother board by pressing it straight onto the connector, all the way in
until it stops.
The cable connector aligns with the top and left side of the large management
module edge connector, as shown in the illustration.
Tighten the two screws
just until they are snug.
Align the fan tray cable connector
with the corner of the large connector
on the switch board. Then press the
cable connector straight onto the
white 9-pin connector in that location.

6. Reinstall the Management module into its slot and the network
modules into their previous positions in slots A and B. (Make sure
you do not overtighten the screws on the modules.)
7. Reinstall the network cables. If you disconnected the network cables in step
2, reconnect the cables to the correct ports on the network modules.
8. Reinstall the power supplies and cover plates. On the back of the switch,
reinstall the power supply or supplies, and cover plates.
Caution: Make sure that AC power is disconnected from the power
supply before installing the power supply into the switch.
9. Reconnect the AC power to the power supplies.
Lower the power supply into
the opening and push it all the
way back until it connects with
the switch power connector.

10. Verify that the switch is operating correctly by observing the LEDs on the
front of the switch, as shown in the illustration below.
The Power Status LED, the Fan Status LED, and the switch Fault LED should be
on solidly and not flashing.
The Replacement Fan Tray procedure is complete.
