Notices of installation, application and maintenance
I. About the document
Every sold automatic tool-change electrical spindle is enclosed with electronic
document of application and maintenance manual; please read the document carefully.
The document highlights the notices which shall be read carefully by personnel of
application and maintenance of HQD electrical spindle, and at the same time, the
electronic document of detailed application and maintenance manual shall be taken as
reference.
All the personnel who perform operations (installation, application and maintenance) to
HQD electrical spindle shall be considered that they have already clearly understood
the document and shall operate strictly according to the document and the electronic
documents of application and maintenance manual; otherwise, all the consequences and
loss shall be borne by users. If the document or the electronic documents are not
available, please ask the supplier to provide them.
II. Avoid hazards and dangers
1. All the operations to the electrical spindle, such as cleaning, maintenance and
service, shall be performed after power off and the complete stop of the spindle;
2. The electrical spindle shall be equipped with safety protection device, otherwise, the
components with high rotary speed would harm or hurt the people near the
components;

3. Do not touch the rotating parts by arms during high speed rotation of electrical
spindle, otherwise, it would cause personal injury;
4. Do not wear loose or saggy clothing (such as tie and wide sleeve clothing, etc.) for
operators of electrical spindle; ladies shall tie up long hair;
5. Apply specified tool holder of HQD, otherwise, it would damage the broach
structure of electrical spindle, and the tool holder may be thrown out and causes
personal injury;
6. Regularly maintenance shall be performed for electrical spindle according to the
manual, otherwise, it may cause the failures and damages to the machine, and may
shorten the service lifetime of electrical spindle.
III.Correct installation, application and maintenance of the products
1. Correct installation
1) The electrical spindle shall be installed firmly; the frame to install the electrical
spindle shall be strong enough to bear the weight of electrical spindle;
2) The parameter setting for the frequency inverter which is connected with electrical
spindle shall strictly comply with data (pole number of motor, rated current, rated
voltage, rated frequency and highest frequency, etc.) on nameplate of electrical
spindle; otherwise, it may damage the electrical spindle, and will not be covered in
the scope of warranty;
3) Some electrical spindles have two voltages, i.e. 220V and 380V, which can be set in
junction box of electrical spindles; please make sure to apply correct configuration.
4) It shall input two inlets of compressed air for electrical spindle, with one of them set

as 6~7bar (1bar=1kg), and the other set as 4bar, which will be indicated on electrical
spindle. Please make sure input correct air pressure. Regarding to 6~7kg
tool-change loop, please apply solenoid valve with high quality to make sure no
compressed air would leak to the line of 6~7bar when the electrical spindle rotating
with high speed; otherwise, it may make the cylinder of electrical spindle contacting
with the top of high speed rotating mandril, and cause sharp friction between
cylinder and mandril which results in the damages. If it is not able to make sure no
leakage of the valve, please apply a safety valve before 6~7kg compressed air
entering into electrical spindle, so that the leaked compressed air will be discharged
to ambient environment. Regarding to the safety valve, please consult the supplier
of electrical spindles;
5) Machines to be equipped with the electrical spindle shall be designed as: even if the
electrical spindle is not working, it shall input 4bar compressed air to the inlet
marked with 4bar of electrical spindle for air seal, so as to avoid dust entering into
bearing of electrical spindle;
6) The electrical spindle is cooled by the fan installed at the end. Machines to be
equipped with the electrical spindle shall be designed as: even if the electrical
spindle is not working, the fan shall work at any time;
7) Please perform the connections of power and signal lines of electrical spindle
strictly according to detailed instruction;
8) The bearing of electrical spindle has already been performed permanent lubrication;
it is not necessary to add lubrication oil.

9) There shall be at least 10cm space behind the cooling fan of electrical spindle, so
that the air could enter into fan freely (the fan blows the air into electrical spindle);
10) Regarding to the compressed air that enters into electrical spindle, please perform
the pneumatic connection diagram according to page 44 in electronic documents of
detailed instruction; please strictly comply with the pressure and connection
indicated in the instruction, including the filtering level. The compressed air shall be
dry without oil, otherwise, it will damage the electrical spindle (please apply triplet
of high quality). Please pay special attention that it shall not add oil in the
compressed air that will enter into electrical spindle which could damage the
electrical spindle. The filter cartridge of the triplet shall be replaced every month; if
the machine used frequently, the filter cartridge shall be replaced twice every month.
The replaced filter cartridge shall not be reapplied after cleaning.
11) The electrical spindle involved in the document is designed to be applied to drill
and mill the wooden, plastic, aluminum and fiber plates. Please do not apply to the
machining of materials, such as steel, stone, and glass, otherwise, it may damage the
electrical spindle, and will not be covered in the scope of warranty.
12) Please read carefully the electronic documents of application and maintenance
manual:
Please connect the power lines and signal lines strictly according to the
instruction;
If there is any questions during installation, please contact supplier in time; do
not take risky operation;

2. Correct application
1) Dynamic balance and rotate speed
Dynamic balance is the most critical part for high speed rotating electrical spindle;
all rotating parts in electrical spindle shall perform dynamic balance, otherwise,
bearing of the spindle will be damaged in a very short time period (the shortest time
will be less than 1 hour); factors that impact the dynamic balance mainly include:
Regarding to the dynamic balance of tool holder, it shall apply the tool holder
that specified or approved by supplier of electrical spindle. Any dismountable
parts in tool holder (such as screws) may be damaged or worn after a time period

of application. If it is necessary to replace these parts, please purchase the parts
that specified or approved by supplier of electrical spindle, because all these
parts shall perform dynamic balance as well.
Regarding to the dynamic balance of the tool, normally each tool has its allowed
rotate speed. If there is no highest rotate speed indicated on the tool, please
consult to the supplier of the tool; do not apply the tool of poor quality. If apply
the tool holder or tool without dynamic balance, the electrical spindle may have
sharp vibration along with loud noise during running. Especially when tool with
long (longer than 70mm) and large diameter (larger than Φ20) is applied, pay
attention that do not exceed certain rotate speed. The electronic documents of
detailed application instruction will present the information of rotate speed
corresponding to the length of tools. Please read it carefully.
2) Notices for tool-change
It is forbidden to change tool before the electrical spindle stops completely,
otherwise, it may damage its cylinder and draw bar; and it may make the spring
of broach structure of its rotator displaced and lost dynamic balance, and it also
cause its draw bar broken;
When change tool for automatic tool-change electrical spindle, take off its tool
holder to perform the replacement, but not allowed to replace directly on
electrical spindle;
It is not allowed to knock the electrical spindle at any time, especially the tool
holder and tool; even during fastening of tools, it shall not fasten the tool by

knocking; otherwise, it may cause small pits on outer and inner rings of ball
bearing which may damage its internal high speed bearing. Under the
circumstance, the ball will roll and stop at the pit during high speed rolling, and
keep pounding; in this case, the ball will be broken soon, and the bearing is
damaged completely. And the phenomenon is the rotator of the electrical spindle
cannot rotate at all.
During tool change, the tool holder shall enter adequately into inner taper wall
(appressed) of electrical spindle, otherwise, it may cause the rivet of tool holder
drop from the handle of electrical spindle, and the draw bar will return sharply
by the effect of spring, and causes the broken of draw bar. The operation
measures shall be as follows: when change tool manually, plug hardly the tool
holder into inner taper hole of electrical spindle, and then loose the button to
clamp the tool holder; when change tool automatically, it shall obviously
observe that the clamp move downward about 0.1~0.2mm.
Make sure to apply high speed tool holder that specified by supplier of HQD
electrical spindle, otherwise, it may cause the rivet dropping from the handle
because of the cooperation between rivets, and the draw bar will return sharply
by the effect of spring, and causes the broken of draw bar.
If the machine stop urgently during machining process, and the tool is still in the
work piece, please do not lift the electrical spindle directly, otherwise, it may
break its drawbar; and it shall loose the tool holder firstly, and then poll out the
tool manually out from the work piece;

When the electrical spindle pick the tool from tool changer, it shall pay attention
to make the z axle move upward after the tool holder leave the clamp
horizontally, otherwise, if the tool holder moves upward in clamp, it will damage
the tool changer and breaks the draw bar of electrical spindle;
The conical surface of tool holders ISO30 shall not apply lubrication oil.
3) Keep sharp edges for tools
Tools shall keep sharp, otherwise, it will increase the load of electrical spindle, and
the machining efficiency will decrease, the vibration increases, the lifetime of
electrical spindle decreases, and it also accelerates the wear of the bearings.
4) Work pieces must be fixed
It shall firmly fix the work pieces on working bench, otherwise, it may cause the
vibration of electrical spindle, and the bearings will be worn quickly.
3. Correct maintenance
1) The cooling liquid of water-cooled electrical spindle shall be filtered before entering
into electrical spindle; the cooling liquid shall be purified water with 10% ethylene
glycol. It is allowed to apply automotive coolant (it is forbidden to apply tap water,
otherwise, the incrustation scale will deposit in cooling duct by the thermal impact
of electrical spindle, and block the cooling duct).
2) Keep the conical surface of tool holder and the inner taper wall of electrical spindle
completely clean at any time without any dust, grease, coolant, oil, metal chips or
corrosion. Check it before operation of electrical spindle. And clean the surface after
work finished with soft and clean cloth every day. Some machining materials are

sticky, such as wax, which may sticky on the conical surface of tool holder and the
inner taper wall of electrical spindle during machining, therefore it shall clean the
surfaces at any time; otherwise, it may cause the eccentricity of tool holder, and
make the electrical spindle loses dynamic balance and has sharp vibration under
high speed rotating, and the bearing will be damaged quickly.
3) Do not apply compressed air to clean the inner taper wall of electrical spindle,
otherwise, dust may enter into the bearing of electrical spindle and cause damages;
4) If the electrical spindle hasn’t been applied for a period, please make sure it will not
be influenced by natural environment, especially the moisture, dust and air, or other
damages caused by storage environment.

9.4.2 Functional diagram for the connection of compressed air of electrical spindle
Figure 9.6 presents the typical connection of compressed air system, and the system
shall be prepared by customer. Apply two solenoid valves to decrease the risk of
system failures. Although this kind of failures happened rarely, once it happens, it may
cause serious consequences; therefore, it is recommended to provide redundancy.

Apply two separate loops to connect the solenoid valves
(position of ref.7 in figure 9.6) to numerical control unit or
manual control system.
Important notice: air source of compressed air shall be dry and
filtered.
When the machine is running, and the electrical spindle has
stopped, it shall provide compressed air at any time to avoid the
dust and dirt from machining area entering into the electrical
spindle (please refer to item 7.7.3).
When electrical spindle has stopped, make sure there is steady air
flow (compressed air) around electrical spindle. Otherwise, please
check the air loop and its connection.
Appendix 4
Application method of Thermistor
The GDL70 Grade 2 and Grade 4 air cooling tool-change electrical spindle applies the
PTC three-core thermistor used for thermal protection of motor, level 110 ℃, which
produced by Shanghai Dadi Communication Electronics Co., Ltd.

Allowed storage temperature: -25 ℃ ~ 160 ℃, the maximum operation voltage:

Application method 1 for thermistor: connect the thermistor into the control end of
frequency converter; set the thermistor to control the parameters of frequency converter.
Please consult the technical service people of frequency converter for detailed
information.
Application method 2 for thermistor: apply intermediate relay with large and
medium power to connect with the three-phase power line of electrical spindle; apply
the thermistor to control the controlling circuit of intermediate relay to realize the open
and close of relay, so as to control the automatic stop of electrical spindle and the
overheat protection of the motor of electrical spindle.
Application method 3 for thermistor: Make use of the control module to convert the
resistance of thermistor into the voltage signal. Taking the 4.5kwPTC 3-core thermistor

as an example, it will output the high level when the stator temperature rise resistance is
1650 Ω(when the resistance of single core thermistor is 550Ω), and the motorized
spindle will stop when the system detects the high voltage signal. It will output the low
level when the stator temperature drop resistance is 750 Ω(when the resistance of
single core thermistor is 250Ω), and the motorized spindle will start when the system
detects the corresponding low voltage signal. In this way, it can protect the motorized
spindle motor.
