A light duty powered scaffold hoist.
Operating & Safety Guide LS140
Secure the brace and support arm together with
the bolt and lock nut provided.
Finally, hook the hoists
mount hook over the end
of the support arm
ensuring that it is slotted
through the safety bar.
Attach the caribina hook
to the mount hook so
that the hoist is held
captive.
Connect the power
supply to the fixed plug
on the unit, (see illustration). Either using a suitable
fly lead or alternatively, a loose end cable drum
(available for hire from your local HSS Lift & Shift Depot).
All that remains is to plug the unit into its power
supply and switch the supply ON.
The control pendent has 3 main buttons. The red
STOP button isolates the unit from the power
supply, in case of an emergency simply press the
button once and all electrics are isolated. To re-set
the button, turn anti-clockwise until it pops back out.
The 2 remaining buttons have direction arrows,
indicating the direction the hoists cable will travel
if pressed.
To lower the cable, press and hold the button with
the down arrow, until the hook is at the required position.
To raise the cable press and hold the button with
the up arrow until the load is raised to the required
position.
Note that when lowering the cable, you must ensure
a minimum of 3 windings remain on the drum.
Do not use the load cable as a sling.
Attach the lifting hook to the load ensuring the
safety latch is correctly engaged. Press the up
button until the load is at the required height.
Note that the hoist is fitted with a limit switch,
which will switch OFF the motor if you over run,
please ensure that the up button is released before the
hook weight is in contact with the limit switch.
BASIC TECHNIQUES
Never push the equipment beyond its design
limits. If it will not safely do what you want with
reasonable ease and speed, assume you have the wrong
equipment for the job. Contact your local HSS Lift & Shift
Depot for advice.
Keep the equipment clean, you will find this less of a
chore if you clean it regularly, rather than wait until the
end of the hire period.
When not in use, store the equipment somewhere
clean, dry and safe from thieves.
Detach the hook from any remaining load and run
the cable fully in. Switch OFF the supply and
unplug the unit.
Dismantle the hoist by reversing the assembly
instructions in ‘GETTING STARTED’.
Collect all parts together ready for return to your
local HSS Lift & Shift Depot.

There is a serious risk of personal injury if you do
not follow all instructions laid down in this guide.
The hirer has a responsibility to ensure that all
necessary risk assessments have been completed
prior to the use of this equipment.
This equipment should only be used by an operator
who has been deemed competent to do so by
his/her employer.
This equipment is designed to be used by an able
bodied, competent adult who has read and
understood these instructions. Anyone with either a
temporary or permanent disability should seek expert
advice before using it.
Keep children, animals and bystanders away from
the work area. Cordon off a NO GO area using
cones and either barriers or tape, available for hire
from your local HSS Lift & Shift Depot.
Never use this equipment if you are ill,
feeling tired, or under the influence of
alcohol or drugs.
Wear practical, protective clothing,
gloves, footwear and a protective
hard hat. Avoid loose garments and jewellery that could
catch in moving parts, tie back long hair.
Do not use cables or chains to lift the load
always use suitable slings and protect them
from sharp edges.
Use this equipment for vertical lifts only and
secure to a level point able to take the
combined weight of the load and the equipment.
Ensure the load is balanced and stable and
that personnel stand clear of the raised load.
Attach “tag”lines to control rotation.
Before lifting a load check that the hook
safety catch is engaged and the load
cable/chain is untangled, hanging freely and
shows no sign of damage.
Make sure you know how to operate this
equipment safely and are aware of its limitations
before you use it.
Make sure that anyone in the immediate work area
is warned of what you are doing. Never allow
anyone under a raised load or in a position where
they are at risk if the load shifts.
Never leave the equipment loaded or unattended.
Make sure the landing area is unobstructed and
able to accept the load in size and weight.
GENERAL SAFETY
Use this type of equipment only on structures that
are able to bear its weight and its load.
If attaching the hoist to a free-standing, ceiling or
window support, ensure you follow the
instructions in our Operating and Safety Guide
No. LS05.
Make sure you know how to switch this machine
OFF before you switch it ON in case you get into
difficulty.
Always switch OFF and unplug the machine
before making adjustments to it.
Never carry or pull the equipment by its power
supply cable.
Never exceed the Hoists safe working load of
100kg.
Check the condition of the equipment before use.
If it shows signs of damage or excessive wear, return it to
your local HSS Hire Shop.
HSS Scaffold Hoists must be provided with a
suitable 110v generated supply, or powered from
the mains via a suitable 110v transformer (minimum 2kva
tool rating).
If the equipment fails, or if its power supply cable or plug
becomes damaged, return it. Never try to repair it yourself.
Keep cables out of harm’s way, and clear of the
work area.
Extension leads should be avoided, however, if
you have no alternative ensure it is fully unwound
and loosely coiled, away from the equipment.
Never run leads through water, over sharp edges or
where they could trip someone.
Using electrical equipment in very damp or wet
conditions can be dangerous.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, always use a
suitable RCD (Residual Current-Operated Device)
available from your local HSS Lift & Shift Depot.
Ensure the power socket is switched OFF before
plugging into the power supply.
The first thing you must arrange is the support for
the hoist. Whichever type of support is used it
must carry a test certificate and be suitable for use
with the lightweight scaffold hoist.
GETTING STARTED
ELECTRICAL SAFETY
Caution
This equipment MUST NOT be used to lift or
carry personnel.
HSS offer a range of specialist hoist supports from
free-standing units to window and ceiling supports,
contact your local HSS Lift & Shift Depot for advice.
The hoist is supplied with two mounting clamps
which are set at the correct distance from each
other with a welded bar. The clamps fit a standard
scaffold tube.
Attach both mounting clamps to a scaffold upright
with the upper clamp no more than 20 metres
above ground level, just below a horizontal member.
To attach the clamps, remove the pair of nut and
bolt and back plate from each clamp and offer the
clamps to the tube.
Now holding the back plate in place, insert the
clamp bolts through the clamp and back plate
then secure with the nuts and tighten to hold it
firmly in place.
Having set up the mounting clamps, remove the
safety pins fitted to both clamps.
Locate the hoists upper brace tube over and onto
the top clamps support stud, and re-fit the safety
pin.
Next, locate the hoists lower support arm tube
over and onto the lower clamps support stud, and
re-fit the safety pin.
