500E. The Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E is designed t give truckm unt-level
perf rmance in a p rtable machine that c mbines versatility with ease f
transp rt. Years f experience, engineering, and planning have g ne int the
design and manufacturing f the Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E. We take a great
deal f pride in the Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E; ur g al is n less than y ur

The Hy ro-Force Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E is inten e for commercial
use only.
This manual will pr vide users with the kn wledge required t perate the
Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E safely, t understand h w t pr perly perate and
maintain the machine, and t ensure that the equipment perates at its maximum
perf rmance level.
All users must rea an un erstan this manual completely before
operating the machine.

Safety
This machine is an electrical appliance.
Care must be taken to re uce the risk of electrical shock.
READ AND UNDERSTAND ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE OPERATING THE MXE-500E.
•T reduce the risk f pr perty damage r injury, repairs t electrical systems sh uld nly be perf rmed by
experienced technicians. C ntact y ur distribut r f r assistance. Unplug machine p wer c rd fr m utlet
bef re perf rming any repairs n the extract r.
•This machine shall be gr unded while in use t pr tect the perat r fr m electric sh ck. The machine is
pr vided with a three-c nduct r c rd and a three-c ntact gr unding type attachment plug t fit the
pr per gr unding type receptacle. The green and yell w c nduct r in the c rd is the gr unding wire.
Never c nnect this wire t ther than the gr unding pin f the attachment plug.
•This machine is f r use n a n minal 240-v lt circuit and
has a gr unding plug that resembles the plug illustrated in
the sketch t the right. Make sure that the machine is
c nnected t an utlet having the same c nfigurati n as
the plug. N plug adapter sh uld be used with this
machine.
• The p wer c rds supplied with this machine are pr perly
sized t handle the electrical l ad f this machine and
pr perly gr unded as described ab ve. Any extensi n
c rds used with this machine must be similarly sized with
an equal r greater l ad rating and gr unded t assure
safe perati n.
•The tw p wer c rds must be plugged int separate circuits during perati n.
•D n t use the MXE-500E utd rs, in standing water r n wet surfaces. D n t st re the MXE-500E in wet
c nditi ns. If extract r is leaking, unplug machine p wer c rds fr m utlets bef re appr aching r t uching
machine.
•D n t unplug p wer c rd by pulling n the c rd. Grasp the plug end when unplugging the c rd. D n t pull
the extract r by the c rd. If c rd r plug is damaged, d n t use c rd. Replace with new c rd r repair as
needed bef re use.
•Overl aded circuit may n t always trip circuit breaker. Reduced v ltage t a machine n an verl aded circuit
will prevent c mp nents fr m perating pr perly.

OUTLET

This machine must be protecte from con itions which
may amage the pump, tank, hoses an other components.
•Freezing of water in this machine will cause serious amage. The Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E, s luti n
h ses, and t ls must be pr tected fr m freezing temperature. St re, transp rt, and use this equipment nly in
temperatures well ab ve freezing. (32ºF r 0ºC). If y u suspect the Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E has been
fr zen, d n t plug in r turn n machine until y u are sure it has thawed c mpletely.
•If the equipment cann t be st red r transp rted in a warm envir nment, it can be guarded fr m freezing by
running an anti-freeze s luti n thr ugh the inc ming water lines, chemical feed system, s luti n pump, s luti n
lines, t ls and pump- ut pump. The machine is filled at the fact ry with anti-freeze t eliminate damage during
shipment in c ld weather.
oThe anti-freeze s luti n must be c mpletely flushed fr m the machine bef re it is returned t service.
•The MXE-500E must n t be used t pick up flammable r c mbustible materials r used in areas where these
materials may be present.
•S lvent-based r water-based s luti ns c ntaining s lvents may damage the pump, h ses, and ther
c mp nents. D n t assume chemical c mpatibility. C ntact y ur distribut r r Hydr -F rce if y u have
questi ns regarding the c mpatibility f y ur chemicals with the machine.
•D n t clean with s luti ns that are at temperatures ab ve 130ºF r 54ºC.
•Rinse the s luti n tank, chemical system, and pump with fresh water after each day’s use.
•D n t all w pump t run dry. Always maintain adequate s luti n level t supply s luti n pump.
•HP h ses may rupture if w rn r damaged. D n t use HP s luti n h ses if h se c vering is cut, bulging, r
therwise damaged. Examine HP s luti n h ses daily and replace r repair h ses as needed.
•Use a Hydr -Filter II and clean the rec very tank daily t keep pump- ut filter and pump fr m bec ming
cl gged. St re the Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E with the rec very tank lid pen.
•Keep Vacuum Inlet Filter clean and check fl at f r pr per perati n. D n t perate the Nautilus Extreme
MXE-500E with ut the Vacuum Inlet Filter in place. Use efoamer to eliminate foam buil -up uring
cleaning an prevent foam/moisture from entering vacuums.
Use common sense to protect yourself an others while using this equipment.
•Keep pets and children away fr m the machine when in use.
•Keep all b dy parts, hair, and l se cl thing away fr m penings and m ving parts. Always wear appr priate
w rk cl thing and safety equipment when perating unit.
•Use extra care when cleaning n stairs. Wet carpet n stairs can be slippery.
•D n t m ve the MXE-500E up r d wn stairs when tanks are full f water. Drain s luti n and rec very
tanks, and secure base latches bef re m ving unit up r d wn stairs. Lift using nly the machine handles
designed & designated f r m ving and lifting.
•Water may be spilled, drip, r be exhausted fr m vacuums during perati n. Place unit in area where water will
n t cause damage r use dr p cl th t pr tect surfaces.

Vacuum Connections
The Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E has a unique vacuum system
which allows you to connect your vacuums in either parallel or in
series. Vacuum connections can be change quickly, without tools.

TECHNICIAN
While there is ebate on which vacuum alignment provi es the best
extraction, this much is true:
•Two vacuums in series: The vacuum lift is increase by 1.6 times
the rating of a single vacuum, while the air flow stays the same as
a single vacuum.
•Two vacuums in parallel: The vacuum air flow is increase by 2.0
times the rating of a single vacuum, while the lift says the same.
Air flow is usually measure in cubic feet per minute, in icate as CFM.
Lift is usually measure in inches of water column, in icate as “H2O or “WC.
To connect vacuums in parallel:
1. C nnect the discharge / exhaust h se fr m vacuum #1 t the exhaust
pipe n machine base.
2. Place the rubber st pper int the vacuum inlet p rt f vacuum
manif ld number tw .
3. Open vacuum gate valve and attach the Gatekeeper t prevent
accidental valve cl sure.
When c nnected in parallel, b th vacuums must be running during cleaning.
Vacuums cann t be perated individually.
To connect vacuums in series:
1. C nnect the discharge / exhaust h se fr m vacuum #1 t the vacuum
inlet p rt f vacuum manif ld number tw .
2. Place rubber st pper int the exhaust pipe n machine base.
3. Rem ve Gatekeeper and cl se vacuum gate valve.
When c nnected in series vacuums can be perated individually if desired
during cleaning.
Always secure the Gate Valve Open with the
Gatekeeper when connecting the vacuums in Parallel. Closing
the Vacuum Gate Valve with the hoses connected in the
Parallel configuration may cause damage to Vacuum #2.

Operation Procedures
Knowle ge of the proper operation of the Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E is
require to ensure user safety an efficient performance of the extractor.
SET UP AND OPERATION
1. Electrical Cor s:
Tw 15m Extensi n c rds are supplied with the Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E. The amperage required by
each c rd requires that the tw c rds be plugged int separate circuits:
•C rd #1 (Left side) P wers Vacuum #1, S luti n Pump and b th C ling Fans.
•C rd #2 (Right side) P wers Vacuum #2 and APO if s equipped.
B th c rds must be c nnected t separate 230/240 v lt 10amp circuits. An verl aded circuit will n t always
trip the circuit breaker immediately, but may n t pr vide sufficient v ltage f r pr per perati n and the
breaker may trip eventually.
Plug the p wer c rds int tw separate utlets with sufficient v ltage and an amp rating f r the p wer
demands f the MXE-500E, c nnect the c rds t the MXE-500E and then pr ceed with y ur set-up.
If a circuit breaker trips r the pump circuit breaker trips during perati n, reset the breakers and m ve the
c rd t an ther utlet as needed.

2A. Water Supply & Chemical Mixing– Manual Fill:
•P ur up t 12 gall ns f h t water int the s luti n tank at the fr nt f the machine. The water
temperature cannot excee 130°

°F or 54°C.
•Measure and add the appr priate am unt f the desired liquid chemical t the water in the s luti n tank.
The am unt f chemical will vary depending n the type f chemical used, the am unt f water in the
tank, and the material being cleaned; c nsult the chemical packaging f r specific mixture rati s.
•P wdered chemicals sh uld be diss lved in water bef re adding t the water in the s luti n tank.
DO NOT RUN OUT OF WATER WHILE USING THE MACHINE! Ensure
that the tank contains enough water to complete each job. If the water level is low: stop cleaning,
turn off the pump, an refill the tank. Running the pump ry will amage the pump an voi the
warranty.
2B. Water Supply & Chemical Dilution – Optional Auto-Fill System:
•The chemical diluti n rate is c ntr lled by the metering tip, and the diluti n rate can nly be changed by
changing the metering tip (See “H w t Change the Metering Tip” n Page 11 f r instructi ns.)
Chemical Fee Setup:
•Rem ve the chemical feed h se fr m the s luti n tank. Make sure fl at is attached t valve and hanging
freely, ab ve the b tt m f the s luti n tank. Adjust fl at height t maintain adequate water level.
•Place the end f the chemical feed h se int a c ntainer f liquid chemical.
•If the tip is rem ved, and the pr p rti ning system perated with n tip, the diluti n rate will be 8:1, the
equivalent t adding 16-1/4 z f chemical t each gall n f water. (125ml per liter)
•The rec mmended tip f r use with the MXE-500E is the turqu ise tip with a diluti n rate f 256:1. This
means that f r each gall n f water fl wing int the machine, 1/2 unce f chemical will be added.
(3.91ml f chemical per liter f water)
•If a fresh water rinse with no chemical is esire , simply leave the chemical fee hose insi e the
solution tank.

How to Change the Metering Tip:
•Rem ve the chemical feed h se fr m the barb n the side f the pr p rti ning valve.
•Unscrew and rem ve the ld tip.
•Screw in the pr per tip f r y ur chemical tip and place the h se back n the barb
Metering Tip Kit (Hy ro-Force Item# PDE001) c ntains 14 different c l red metering tips, all wing
diluti n rates fr m 11:1 up t 427:1. Refer t the chart bel w t select the tip that meets the diluti n rate f r
y ur chemical applicati n.
•F r example: if y u require 1-1/2 unces f chemical per gall n f water, change t the red metering tip
with the diluti n rate f 85:1. (11.77 ml f chemical per liter f water)
•The diluti n rates are based n chemicals with water-like visc sity. Thicker (m re visc us) chemicals will
dilute at a different rate.
•F r p wdered chemicals, a liquid c ncentrate must be made. Mix the c ncentrate acc rding t the
manufacturer’s directi ns, and then select the appr priate metering tip.

Water Supply:
•Once the c rrect metering tip is in place:
oC nnect the Aut -Fill Water Supply H se t the water inlet (the male quick-c nnect n the fr nt
f the machine.)
oC nnect the ther end f the h se t a water faucet, and then turn n the water.
•H t water can be used as l ng as the temperature d es n t exceed 130°F r 54°C.
•Faucet adapter kits (Hydr -F rce item #AX21 & AX22) are available that all w c nnecti n t different
types f faucets if needed.
To a just the water level in the solution tank:
•Turn ff the water supply.
•Adjust the length f the chain c nnecting the fl at b ttle t
the fl at valve. Unh k the fl at fr m the beaded chain n
the valve. Unsnap the h k fr m the beaded chain n the
fl at.
M ve the b ttle d wn t decrease the water level.
M ve the b ttle up t increase the water level.
•Snap the back nt the fl at chain & h k the fl at back
nt the valve chain.
•Turn the water supply back n.
If the chemical is n t drawing, r if the tank is n t filling
r is verfl wing, refer t the tr uble sh ting guide, r
c ntact y ur distribut r f r assistance.

3. Priming the High-Pressure Pump:
Once water is in the s luti n tank, the s luti n pump must be primed:
•There is a priming h se included with the machine. C nnect the priming h se t the s luti n utlet –
female quick c nnect n the fr nt f the machine.
•Turn n b th vacuums and the s luti n pump. Insert the end f the priming h se int the vacuum
inlet p rt n the fr nt f the machine and cup y ur hand ar und the h se t bl ck ff the vacuum
inlet with y ur hand. The vacuum will pull s luti n thr ugh the pump and priming h se int the
vacuum tank.
•Turn ff the pump and vacuums. Disc nnect the priming h se. Y u can n w c ntinue y ur set-up.
As l ng as there is s luti n in the tank, the pump sh uld remain primed.
If the pump still d es n t prime, r if fl w is l w r unsteady, check the h se fr m the s luti n tank t the
pump (as well as the filter) f r cl gging, kinks, r restricti ns. Clean r replace h se and/ r filter and repeat
the priming pr cedure.
If y u are having tr uble with the pump, refer t the tr uble sh ting guide r c ntact y ur distribut r f r
advice r assistance.
4. Connection of Solution Hose:
C nnect the high pressure s luti n h se t the s luti n utlet (female quick c nnect n the fr nt f the
machine). C nnect the ther end f the h se t the male quick c nnect n the cleaning t l. When y u are
ready t start cleaning, turn the s luti n pump switch t the ON p siti n

5. Connection of Vacuum Hoses:
The vacuum c nnecti n p rt n the machine can be either a 2” h se barb r 2” male Flash Cuff. B th are
included with y ur Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E. The desired c nnect r can be threaded int the vacuum
p rt n the fr nt f the machine.
A 2” female Flash Cuff 1-1/2” h se adapter is als included t c nnect the 1-1/2” vacuum h se t the 2”
male Flash Cuff n the machine.
A 2” h se cuff f r 1-1/2” vacuum h se is included t c nnect the 1-1/2” vacuum h se t the 2” h se barb
n the machine.
With the pr per cuff attached t the 25’ Vacuum H se, the 25’ vacuum h se is then c nnected t the vacuum
c nnecti n p rt n the Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E. The ther end with the 1-1/2” cuff is c nnected t
the cleaning t l.
When ready t begin cleaning, turn b th vacuum switches t the ON p siti n. If c nnected in series, the
Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E can be perated with nly ne vacuum f r cleaning delicate fabrics. (See
Vacuum C nnecti n instructi ns n Page 8) In m st situati ns y u will turn b th vacuum switches ON.

6. Optional Foam Downer:
A key pr blem with p rtable extract rs is that they have small tanks where f am dissipates sl wly. If y u
have had issues with f am r are anticipating f aming pr blems, y u will want t c nnect a F am D wner.
F am can be drawn int the vacuums bef re the vacuum shut ff cl ses. F am and water bl wing ut the
vacuum makes a big mess, can decrease vacuum lift and damage the vacuum m t rs.
The F am D wner kills f am as waste water enters the machine. Place a c ntainer f liquid def amer n the
t p f y ur Nautilus Extreme MXE-500E. The vacuum air fl w siph ns the liquid def amer thr ugh F am
D wner int the vacuum tank, breaking d wn the f am bef re it can cause any damage r make a mess.

The F am D wner is an attachment that all ws the vacuum t draw a small am unt f def amer in a
c nstant sl w fl w int the waste tank f the Nautilus. We rec mmend using a diluted def aming s luti n f
f ur unces f def amer t ne gall n f water (1-32). Place the draw tube int the gall n f diluted
def amer and pen the needle valve ne half turn as y ur starting p int. If this is n t sufficient t break
d wn the f am y u can pen the valve m re r add m re def amer t the water t make a str nger s luti n.
With the valve pen ne half turn it will take appr ximately ne half h ur t drain the gall n f diluted
def aming s luti n.

7. Connection of Pump-Out Hose:
The pump- ut h se is a 50’ secti n f 3/4” garden h se. (Use f smaller diameter h se may reduce fl w.)
•Rem ve the cap fr m the pump- ut utlet fitting n the back f the machine.
•C nnect the pump- ut h se t the utlet fitting.
•Place the ther end f the h se in a c mm de r drain c nnected t the sanitary sewer system.
•Secure h se end t prevent m vement during pumping.
Use efoamer to prevent foam buil -up in recovery tank uring cleaning an to keep
foam/moisture from entering vacuums.
Use Hy ro Filter II inline filter to trap an remove ebris from the waste water before it
enters the recovery tank. Excess ebris in recovery tank may clog Pump-Out filter. Clean

Do not turn the Waste Pump switch ON unless pump-out hose is connecte an has been
route to a proper rain.
The Waste Pump uses a float switch an oes not start pumping until the water level in the
tank is high enough to lift the float switch. The pump will turn ON & OFF uring normal
operation. Pump will be amage if allowe to run ry.
When ready t begin cleaning, turn the Waste Pump switch t the ON p siti n.
If n t using the waste pump- ut, the pump- ut h se d es n t need t be c nnected. When the rec very tank
fills during cleaning, the fl at assembly in the vacuum inlet filter will rise and will aut matically shut ff the
vacuum air fl w t prevent the rec very tank fr m verfilling and waste water fr m getting int the vacuums.
When this ccurs:
•Immediately shut ff the vacuum switches.
•Drain the rec very tank.
oTurn ff the pump switch while draining the tank.
oTurn pump switch back up n resumpti n f cleaning.
•Cl se the drain valve and turn the vacuum switches back n
when ready t resume cleaning.

assistance.

7. Pressure A justment:
T make it easier t check and adjust the pressure, the pressure gauge and the pressure regulat r are m unted
n the c ntr l panel n the fr nt f the machine. When the high-pressure s luti n pump is n and primed,
pressure will sh w n the gauge.
•T decrease the pressure, turn the brass kn b n the pressure regulat r t the left (c unter-
cl ckwise.)
•T increase the pressure, turn the brass kn b n the pressure regulat r t the right (cl ckwise.)
•T adjust pressure t y ur t l and surface requirements:
oCheck the pressure n the gauge.
oRe-adjust as needed t set the machine at the desired pressure.
oCh se the pressure setting that best meets y ur type f cleaning.
Pressure gauge & Regulator
To increase the solution pressure, turn the
regulator knob clockwise.
To decrease the solution pressure, turn the
regulator knob counter-clockwise.
The maximum pressure setting is 500psi; h wever,
the highest pressure attained is dependent n the
am unt f water fl w at the t l:
•Smaller jets and l wer fl w will all w f r
higher pressure at the t l.
•Larger jets and higher fl w will l wer the
maximum pressure attained at the t l.
The desired setting will depend n the type f
cleaning and t l used. F r example:
•Carpet Cleaning with 2-jet AW29 wand: 400psi
•Uph lstery Cleaning with AW50D t l: 200psi

•If using the pti nal aut -fill system, turn the water supply ff bef re finishing each j b. This will all w
use f the water and chemical already in the tank, and will reduce the am unt f excess water t be
disp sed f later.
•When finished cleaning, turn ff all switches.
•If the pti nal aut -fill system was used and there is still water in the s luti n tank, push the fl at d wn
t release the water inlet h se pressure bef re disc nnecting the h se fr m the faucet. Disc nnect the
water inlet h se fr m the quick-c nnect n the fr nt f the machine.
•Disc nnect the s luti n h se and vacuum h se fr m the cleaning t l. Pull valve trigger t release
pressure fr m the h se bef re disc nnecting s luti n h se fr m cleaning t l.
•If a Hydr Filter II inline filter was used, disc nnect the Hydr -Filter II fr m the vacuum h ses and clean
the filter as needed. Replacement filter screens are available
(AC10C.)
•Disc nnect the vacuum h se and s luti n h se fr m the machine.
•If water remains in the s luti n tank, use the vacuum h se and
vacuum the excess water fr m the tank.
•If the pti nal aut -fill system was utilized, place the chemical feed
h se back int the s luti n tank.
•If the pti nal Aut waste pump- ut system was used:
oTurn the waste pump switch “ n” & lift fl at switch t pump ut any remaining water fr m the
rec very tank.
oTurn switch ff, rem ve the pump- ut h se fr m the utlet fitting and replace the cap.
oR ll up h se t ward drain t rem ve remaining water fr m h se.
oC nnect ends f h se t gether t prevent dirty water fr m dripping fr m h se during transp rt.
•Disc nnect the p wer c rds fr m the utlets and fr m the machine.
•Rem ve the fl at shut ff assembly fr m the rec very tank and clean
vacuum shut ff filter as needed.
•Clean Pump-Out Pump and Fl at Switch.
Replace shut ff assembly and tank lid.
•Drain any remaining water fr m the rec very tank
and disp se in sanitary drain. D n t use the same
bucket t drain the tank that y u use t fill the tank.
•R ll up all h ses and c rds.
