A. Assembly Instructions
1) After opening the box, cut the plastic ties that secured the
U-Step II in transit.
2) Lift up on the tube at
the top near the seat so
that the seat becomes
horizontal with the
ground.
ress the seat down
until it snaps into place.
(Below)
3) Install the left and the right
handlebars.
If you have any doubt which is the
left and right handlebar, look at the
junction box below the seat and
you can see the left handle bar
cable is connected into the left side
and vice versa for the right.

You will need to push in the height adjustment button to slide
the handle bar into the lower height adjustment tube. (Left)
Also, when you insert the handlebars make sure that the cables
are routed to the inside of the handlebars, rather than the out-
side. (Right)
4) Adjusting the Handlebars to the proper height. Generally, the
handlebars are adjusted so that the handles are 2-3 inches above
your palm when your arm rests at your side.
5) Quick-Release Handle Bar Lock Lever
a. Slide each handle bar in by depressing the
spring-loaded pin at the bottom of the handle bar.
b. Rotate the Quick-Release Locking Lever
clockwise about three to six turns (B1), until the
lever is in the upright position, then flip the
lever straight down to tighten the handle bar
(B2).
c. Check whether the handle bar wiggles left or
right. If the handle bar wiggles, unlock the
lever and rotate it another turn clockwise; fold
the lever to tighten, and check again for any
wiggling. Repeat this procedure until the han-
dle bars are sufficiently tight.

B. Braking
The U-Step II wheels will not
roll until you release the brakes
in one of the following ways:
1) Squeeze either or both hand
brake levers to release the
brakes.
2) ull up on the release bar of
the alternative brake accessory
discussed in section H.
1) Not everyone needs to adjust the tension control to be safe.
However, if you feel that the U-Step II rolls too easily for you,
use the tension control to add resistance. lace your U-Step II
on the surface where you walk most often. You will need more
tension on a smooth surface such as flooring than you will on
carpet.
2) Using a flat head screwdriver, loosen the locking blot about
two turns.

ARNING:
While sitting, DO NOT push
off with your feet to move
the U-Step II. This is unsafe.
D. Sitting Down
To sit down, you can either turn
around while holding the han-
dlebar, or pivot the U-Step II
around so that it is positioned
behind you and then sit down
on the seat.
When you are sitting on the
U-Step II you are facing back-
wards relative to the moving
direction of the U-Step II.
3) The Tension Control Lever is initially set to Low (L). ush the
Tension Control Lever forward (toward the H) to increase the
tension. Re-tighten the tension locking bolt making sure the
lever settles into one of the set holes. Note: If you do not posi-
tion the lever in a set hole, the tension lever might rub against
the side of the gray wheel.
4) Remember to
squeeze one of the
hand brakes while test-
ing the walker. Test the
rolling speed of the
walker; if you need
more or less resistance
adjust accordingly.

E. alking Over Obstacles
The U-Step II has a patented
spring-loaded front caster that
enables it to roll over obsta-
cles, such as door molding
strips and cracks in the side-
walk. It will help you ride over
obstacles as high as one half-
inch.
By removing the safety pins
that stop the rear wheels from
springing up, you can navigate
up larger obstacles such as
curbs without lifting the walker.
You can go up a curb or small
step by either stepping down
on the back of the base, or just
by pulling back on the handle-
bars, you can raise the front of
the walker to go up a curb or
small step.
After raising the front
end, release the
brake and roll up the
obstacle. This feature
requires reasonable
balance and is not
appropriate for every
one. If you feel
unsafe using this fea-
ture, keep the lock-
ing pins in place.

H. Optional Accessories
1) Laser and Sound Cueing Module — Operating the Unit
The module primarily helps those with arkinson’s freezing but
also helps anyone with an irregular gait pattern. The Laser and
Sound Cueing Module can help you get started, normalize your
walking, and increase your stride.
To activate the Laser Cueing function, press the red button on
the unit attached to the right handlebar. You should hear a
series of clicks and see the red power indicator light blinking. A
bright red laser line will appear on the floor to guide your steps.
In this mode, without Sound Cueing activated, the upper black
button adjusts the time period before automatic laser shutoff to
conserve battery power, and the lower black button adjusts the
clicking volume. ressing the upper button extends the shutoff
period from 4 to 28 minutes in increments of 4 minutes; each
click that sounds after pressing the button indicates 4 minutes
of operating time in effect (from 1 to 7 clicks). ressing the
lower button lowers the click volume in steps to the softest set-
ting, then recycling to the loudest setting.
To activate Sound Cueing, press and hold the top black button
in for a few seconds until you hear a steady clicking. In this

— 12 —
mode, the two black buttons increase or decrease the cadence
(speed) with each brief press. The cadence varies from 59 to
130 beats per minute over 15 increments.
The Sound Cueing only operates while the Laser Cueing is on.
When Sound Cueing is activated, both the sound and laser
remain on indefinitely. Turning the Sound Cueing off requires
shutting the entire module off, by pressing the red button.
Use either alkaline or lithium
“AA” batteries. Remove the
small screw holding the bat-
tery cover on (Figure 1) and
slide the cover to the left to
remove it. Note the posi-
tion of the two batteries
(Figure 2), ensuring that the
the “+” and “–” sides are
installed in opposite direc-
tions. The unit will click
either three or five times
when the batteries are
installed correctly. If the
unit clicks three times, it is
shutting off. If the unit clicks
five times, it is turning on
and the power indicator will
blink.

2) Alternati e Brake Accessory – ( rovided Upon Request)
This allows a person to operate the brakes from a Horizontal bar
that attaches at the handles. This feature is rarely used which is
why it is not included. However, if you would like one sent to
you, please call In-Step and we will be happy to send it to you.

3) Weights —
Although the U-Step II is very stable, we do offer weights as an
accessory to increase the
stability of the walker.
These weights easily
secure to the base of the
U-Step II using Velcro
straps
.
Alternati e Brake Accessory Installation instructions below:
a. Loosen the height adjustment bolts on the left and right
side with the 13-millimeter wrench supplied.
b. Carefully insert
the ends of the brake
accessory into the rear
of each handlebar until
the push pin engages
in the holes on the
walker.
c. Adjust the height of the handlebars so that the horizontal
bar is at a comfortable height for you.
d. Re-tighten the height adjustment bolts.
e. The pull-up rod below should be positioned below the
hand brakes so that when the rod is pulled up the hand brakes
are squeezed.
f. If you use this Alternative Brake setup, you may want to
remove the backrest in front so that you can sit down on your
U-Step II from the front.
