Safety Precautions
Read these instructions carefully before you install, operate, or transport the EonStor
DS RAID systems and JBODs.
Installation and Operation
Install the rack cabinet and the associated equipment at a site where
the ambient temperature stays lower than 35C.
Install the power source socket outlet near the enclosure where it is
easily accessible and ground the rack cabinet.
Secure airflow clearance inside and around the rack cabinet.
- Secure an 18 to 20cm clearance on the rear side.
- Do not cover the openings at the front and rear of the enclosure.
- Route cables inside the rack cabinet.
Always close the drawers once you have performed your maintenance
task, leaving the drawers opened will affect the airflow efficiency.
Secure each enclosure module using its retaining screws.
Place power cords and other cables away from foot traffic. Do not place
objects on power cords and make sure they do not rest against data
cables.
Install all modules to the enclosure before powering on the system.
Ensure that the correct power range is being used before powering on
the device.
DO NOT remove panels or replaceable modules during operation
unless you are performing a maintenance task. During maintenance,
removed panels or modules should be replaced as swift as possible.
If the enclosure is not going to be used for a long period of time,
disconnect it from the mains to avoid transient over-voltage.
For power source redundancy, please make sure that at least two of the
three PSUs are plugged into two different power sources (eg. to
different circuit breakers).

Service and Maintenance
Service and Maintenance
Keep the faulty module in place until you have a replacement unit in hand;
an empty module slot greatly affects the airflow efficiency within the
enclosure.
During service operation, place the enclosure on soft and clean surface to
prevent damaging its exterior. Do not place power tools or other objects on
top.
When transporting the enclosure, repackage all disk drives separately in the
original package foam blocks. Replaceable modules can stay in the
enclosure if you are using the original package; if not, repackage them
separately as well.
Disconnect power cords before servicing or cleaning the enclosure.
Use a slightly dampened cloth for cleaning. Avoid using liquids or spray-on
detergents.
When replacing components, insert them gently while assuring full
engagement. Vibration and shock can easily damage hard drives.
Only qualified service personnel should operate and maintain the enclosure.
Contact service personnel if any of the following situations occurs:
- The power cord or plug is damaged.
- The enclosure has been exposed to liquid.
- The system has not been working properly.
- The enclosure was dropped against a hard surface.
- The enclosure shows obvious signs of breakage.
To move the enclosure, at least four people will be required due to its weight.
Hard drives should be removed from the enclosure beforehand.

The use of Infortrend certified components is strongly recommended to ensure
compatibility, quality and normal operation with your Infortrend products. Please
contact your distributor for a list of Infortrend certified components (eg. SFP, SFP+,
HBA card, iSCSI cable, FC cable, DRAM module, etc.).

ESD Precautions
Handle modules by their retention screws, ejector levers, or the
module’s metal frame/ faceplate only. Avoid touching the PCB boards or
connector pins.
Use a grounded wrist strap and an anti-static work pad to discharge
static electricity when installing or operating the enclosure.
Avoid dust, debris, carpets, plastic, vinyl, and styrofoam in your work
area.
Do not remove any module or component from its anti-static bag before
installation takes place.
Avoid stacking hard drives on one another as contacts with the exposed
PCB or rear-side interfaces may damage the hard drives.

1 Introduction
1.1 Product Overview
This manual introduces the EonStor DS S48 series RAID and JBOD storage systems
that support SAS 3Gbps, SAS 6Gbps, SATA-II 3Gbps and SATA-III 6Gbps hard
drives up to 3TB (refer to Installing Hard Drive Prerequisites). The 4U enclosure S48
series storage system has three drawers that can hold up to 48 hard drives. It
features fast host port connectivity for fast data transfer and remote replication
capabilities. There is a 6Gbps mini-SAS expansion port for users to further expand to
four S48 series JBOD system for a total of 240 hard drives. There are also three
redundant and hot-swappable power supply units to ensure the system operates
continuously should one of them fail.

1.1.1 Front Panel
The Infortrend S48 series enclosure front panel features three drawers that hold 16
hard drives each. Looking at the front panel, the S48 RAID and JBOD systems can
be distinguished from the LCD panel (1) that can be found on the front panel of the
RAID series enclosures. On the front panel of each drawer (2), there are three
drawer component status LEDs (3) and a drawer release notch (4). On the JBOD
system, there is an LED panel (5) on the side and an ID switch (6) at the bottom.

1.1.2 Rear Panel
The rear panel of S48 series comprises of (1) controller A & (2) controller B (or a (4)
dummy cage for single controller models) and (3) three power supplies with built-in
system cooling modules. All host, management and expansion interfaces are on the
controller. In the illustrations below, dual controller models are on top while single
controller models are at the bottom.

Do NOT remove the dummy cage for the single-controller model. Doing so will
disrupt the internal airflow.

1.2 Major Components
NOTE
On receiving and unpacking your system, check the package contents against the
included Unpacking List. If any modules, contents or accessories are missing,
contact your system vendor immediately.
1.2.1 Cache Backup Module (CBM) of RAID Controllers
Each RAID controller comes with a pre-installed DDR II DRAM module and an
innovative Cache Backup Module (CBM) methodology, which consists of a (1) flash
backup module (FBM) and (2) battery backup unit (BBU). In the event of a power
outage, cached data is quickly distributed to a flash backup module with the support
of a BBU. Because of a shorter discharge time, BBU life expectancy is extended, and
data is safely kept in flash regardless of the traditional 72 hours limitation.

The use of a CBM is highly recommended in order to safeguard data integrity. If you
are using the single controller models and would like to install a CBM, refer to
Installing Cache Backup Module (CBM) for RAID Models.
The CBM (BBU and FBM) can be default or optional item depending on the model:

The BBU is only partially charged when shipped. Therefore, after powering on the
system, the BBU will start charging till it has reached its full capacity. It requires
approximately twelve hours for the battery to be fully charged. If the battery is not
fully charged after twelve hours (refer to CBM status LED in the Controller LEDs for
RAID Models), there may be a problem with the BBU and you should contact your
system vendor immediately. You can also check the status of the battery backup
module via SANWatch or the firmware (refer to the SANWatch or Firmware manual
for more details).
1.2.2 JBOD Controller and Interface
The JBOD expander controllers distribute data flow to individual disk drives and
report operating statuses through a proprietary enclosure service via in-band
protocols. JBODs can be daisy chained and they connect to a RAID system to serve
as a building block of a scalable configuration.
The two SFF-8088 Mini-SAS interfaces come with 4 PHYs wide links each. Each
SAS PHY physical link is capable of 3.0Gbps or 6.0Gbps data rate. With a backplane
adapting SAS or SATA drives, the system supports enterprise-class SAS,
cost-effective SATA-II or SATA-III disk drives, and is ideal for adding large capacity to
a storage pool.
The general rule for connection between RAID and JBOD systems:
Dual controller RAID systems connect to dual controller JBOD systems.
Single controller RAID systems connect to single controller JBOD systems.

Fan Module
There are three PSUs with built-in cooling modules to supply power to the S48 and
cool the system. Each power supply contains the following fans:

There is also a drawer fan module at the end of each drawer to regulate airflow and
keep hard drives operating within their norm temperature.

1.2.4 Internal Backplane
An integrated backplane separates the front and rear sections of the chassis. This
circuit board provides logic level signals and low voltage power paths. Thermal
sensors and I2C devices are embedded to detect system temperatures and
PSU/cooling module operating status. The internal backplane board is not
user-serviceable.
WARNING
DO NOT attempt to access the backplane board as it lead to fatal damage of the
RAID system. Also, physical contact with the backplane may cause electrical
hazards.

1.3 Front Panel Components
The modular design of the active components facilitates their easy installation and
removal. Hot-swap mechanisms are incorporated to eliminate power surges and
signal glitches that might occur while removing or installing these modules. Each
component is described below.
1.3.1 LCD Keypad Panel for RAID Models
The LCD panel provides full access to RAID configuration settings and system
information. The LCD initial screen displays the system’s model name. A different
name can be manually assigned to the system making it easier to identify in a
topology consisting of numerous arrays (refer to the Firmware Manual). Users can
find the following on the LCD panel: (1) Status LEDs, (2) LCD screen, (3) Mute button,
and (4) push buttons. Please refer to LCD Keypad for RAID Models for details.

1.3.2 LED Panel for JBOD Models
The LED panel on a JBOD storage expansion system can be located on the chassis
ear. The LED panel contains Service/ Mute LED & button (1), a power supply status
LED (2), cooling module status LED (3), temperature sensor status LED (4), System
fault LED (5) and rotary ID switch (6). Please refer to LED Panel for JBOD Models.
WARNING
If critical faults are indicated on the LED panel, verify the cause of the problem as
soon as possible and contact your system vendor and arrange for a replacement
module.

WARNING
DO try to fill all 48 hard drive slots with hard drives and when performing a
maintenance task on hard drive(s), DO NOT remove more than one hard drive out of
the drawer at a time. DO NOT attempt to access the backplane board as it may lead
to fatal damage of the RAID system. Also, physical contact with the backplane may
cause electrical hazards.

Front of enclosure Opening the drawer
There are three hard drive drawers in the S48 system and when viewed from the top,
the first drawer on the left contains hard drives numbering from 1~16, the second
drawer in the middle contains hard drives 17~32 and the third drawer on the right
contains hard drives 33~48. On the front panel of each hard drive drawer are three
status LEDs and when lid, they indicate (1) HDD Bay Full, (2) Drive Failed and (3)
Fan Failed. To open the drawer, place your index finger underneath the (4) unlock
tab, push the tab upwards and pull the drawer out towards you. Should (2) Drive
Failed and (3) Fan Failed LED light up red, please determine the exact hard drive
fault and arrange for a replacement immediately.
WARNING
When closing the drawers, please do not place your hand(s) underneath the drawer
while closing it as your finger(s) may get stuck or caught underneath!
