handling some of the more sophisticated capabilities of the IPitomy 1500.
Even the most advanced features of the system include easy-to-follow
instructions.
•Installation Notes –These business scenarios and tips suggest “how” or
“why” a specic feature implementation might be helpful.
•? – These quick reference sections in the online administration offer tips about

System Requirements
Network Requirements
Making preparations for the network in advance will assure there are no
surprises. If you are going to have remote extensions, you will need access to
the router to set up a network address translation (NAT).
IP Addresses
It is important to know the IP addresses of specic pieces of equipment to make
installation of the IPitomy 1500 simple. IP addresses identify equipment on a
network. They are used by that equipment to communicate, by sending and
receiving packets of data. IP addresses work the same way a street address is
used to route a letter. Routers, computers, printers, servers and phones are all
examples of equipment that can have an IP address. Data packets are routed
over the Internet and then the Local Area Network or LAN (a group of related
and connected computers that share resources) to a unique IP address for each
piece of equipment.
Determining Local Network Address (Microsoft
WindowsMachine)
1. Go to Start and click on Run type “cmd” and press Enter.
2. At the Command Prompt type “ipcong /all” and press Enter. Windows will
display the current connection details (Diagram 1.9). These connection details
contain important information used in the setup of the IPitomy 1500.

Copyright © 2007 IPitomy Communication, LLC 0007VRD1 13
Write the following information in the IPitomy 1500 Installation Checklist:
•IP Address
•Subnet Mask
•Default Gateway
Determining an Available IP Address
Adding the IPitomy 1500 to an existing Local Area Network (LAN) requires
knowing what IP address can be given to the system. Every new piece of
equipment added to the network must have its own IP address. Pinging an IP
address determines if an IP address is available to be used. A ping is a call to the
IP address to see if it exists. If a ping gets a response then the IP address is in
use.
To ping an IP address on a Windows-based machine already congured on the
local network:
1. Go to Start and click on Run, type “cmd” and press Enter.
2. At the Command Prompt type “ping *[192.168.1.249]” and press Enter. This
IP Address is the IPitomy 1500 default static IP Address. The IP Addresses
you ping on your local network will be dened by your router. For example,
even though the default IP Address for the IPitomy 1500 is 192.168.1.249, the
IP Addresses that you ping to determine if one is available may differ. This will
be determined by your gateway (router) address.
3. If you receive a “Destination net unreachable” message like in (Diagram
1.10), the # *[192.168.1.249] is an IP Address not in use and can be
assigned to the IPitomy 1500.
*Sample congurations are for a Windows XP operating system and Linksysrouter and are for demonstration purposes
only. This IP Address is determined by the default gateway (router) you discovered in Determining the Local Network
Address.

Copyright © 2007 IPitomy Communication, LLC 0007VRD1 14
4. If you get a pong or “Reply from *192.168.1.249” like in (Diagram 1.11) the IP
Address is in use. Continue pinging IP addresses on “*[192.168.1.XXX]” that
are greater than “*[192.168.1.249]” until you nd a “Destination net
unreachable.” Make a record of this IP address in the IPitomy 1500
Installation Checklist to use later in the installation.
Implementation Note 1
Exact IP addresses will be determined by your specic network.
Service Providers
In order to provision the IPitomy 1500 it is necessary to know the type of Service
Providers being used. Common types of Service Providers include:
Carrier Services
•T1 and PRI
•FXO or Plain Old Telephone Line
•FXS or Extension/Tie Line
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Services
•Calls routed over the internet or voice over internet protocol (VoIP).
As part of the installation it will be important to know the:
•Name of Providers
•Type of Service Provided (e.g., T1, FXO, FXS or SIP)
•Phone Numbers Associated with the Service
•Password and Login Information for SIP Providers (VoIP)
Record this information on the IPitomy 1500 Installation Checklist.

User and Business Information
The IPitomy 1500 is meant to simplify communication within an organization. The
key to this happening is not only, understanding how to technically provision the
system, but also, to understand how the system will work best for the business
and its users. To do this it is important to know by whom and how the phone
system will be used within the organization.
As a new business this information will need to be initially dened. If the IPitomy
1500 is replacing an existing system, the existing system setup is a great place
to start. After collecting this information, ask a select group of people within the
organization how they would like to see the system provisioned. This will help
account for any changes within the organization or features users don’t currently
have, but might benet from having. For example, if there is a group of Customer
Service Representatives taking calls, to what telephone lines are they to have
access? In what order will the representatives take these calls? Once you have
dened the needs of the system users record this information in the IPitomy
1500 Installation Checklist:
•User Names – Be sure to conrm spelling and ask if users will be referred
to by something other than their Surname. It is also a good idea to check
spelling.
•Extension Numbers – Dene the extensions that will be associated with
each person, department or group within the business. Determine if there
will be any extensions used as a general mailbox that will not have a person
associated with them.
•Email Addresses – The IPitomy 1500 will forward a voicemail message in
Wav format (as an audio le) to a user’s PC.
•How to Answer Incoming Calls – Get an understanding of how groups
of callers will be answering calls. How many seconds should a phone ring
before being sent to voicemail.
•Phone Numbers Associated With People and Groups – Are there
any phone numbers associated with specic people or groups within the
organization?
•Day-to-Day Calling Practices – What are the businesses operating hours?
What timeframe does it answer calls?
•Holidays and Emergencies – What happens to calls during times when the
ofce is closed? How are calls handled during an emergency?

Installation and Set-up of IPitomy 1500
Setting up the IPitomy 1500 is straightforward and intuitive. Using information on the
IPitomy 1500 Installation Checklist to populate the online administration menus can
make system installation as easy as lling in the blanks.
Implementation Note 2
Save Changes
When installing or administering the IPitomy 1500, each time a change is made it is important to
click on the Save Changes button (at the bottom of each online administration page). This saves
changes made to the selected administration page. To save changes to an administration page
click on Save Changes.
Apply Changes
To commit changes to the system click on Apply Changes. This feature allows a System
Administrator to make changes to several aspects of the system (online pages) before committing
them to the PBX. To commit changes to the system 1500 click on Apply Changes.
Setting PBX IP Address
Network on 192.168.1.XXX (192.168.1.249 not available)
If this does not apply proceed to Network Not On 192.168.1.XXX.
The IPitomy 1500 comes with the default IP address of 192.168.1.249. When you ping

Changing this default setting will require the following equipment:
•A Windowsbased PC
•A Router
•Two Cat5 network cables
•IPitomy 1500
Once you have the equipment needed to change the default settings of the system
follow the steps below. The sample setup instructions use a Windows XPoperating
system and Linksysrouter and are meant for demonstration purposes only.
1. Setup the router outside the local area network (LAN).
2. Connect a PC (used for setup) and the IPitomy 1500 to this new network.
The conguration should look like the diagram below.
