1.5. Operation of Blue-X-Lite
WARNING!
Risk of injury due to optical radiation: Risk Group 2 acc. EN 62471:2008
Looking directly into the light of the Blue-X-Lite can cause eye damage if the
duration of the eyelid closure reflex of 0.25 s is exceeded. Under real circumstances
(for exposure time, conditions of the eye pupils, observation distance), it is assumed
that no endangerment to the eye exists from these devices. As a matter of principle,
however, it should be mentioned that intense light sources have a high secondary
exposure potential due to their blinding effect. When looking at bright light sources
(e.g. headlights), temporary reduction in visual acuity and afterimages can occur,
leading to irritation, annoyance, visual impairment, and even accidents, depending
on the situation.
•Before switching on, make sure that no person is in the light beam of the
lamp and can be blinded by it!
•Do not look directly into the light of the Blue-X-Lite!
•Always turn down the intensity of the Blue-X-Lite during setup and
adjustment so that the user is not blinded!
•Always use the enclosed safety goggles while handling the Blue-X-Lite
during installation and operation!
Risk of epileptic shock
Stroboscopic light can trigger seizures in photosensitive epilepsy.
•Do not use the device in the presence of persons who are at risk of
epileptic attacks!
Risk of burns when touching the Blue-X-Lite
Depending on the ambient temperature, the housing and lens of the Blue-X-Lite
can become very hot during longer operation. Touching the Blue-X-Lite can cause
slight burns in this case.
•Always allow the Blue-X-Lite to cool down before touching it!
•Never use a Blue-X-Lite with a damaged lens.
•Under any circumstances keep the minimum safety distance(s) given in the
technical specification to avoid damages caused by light beam(s) and / or
thermal radiation and / or heat radiation to person(s), animal(s) and / or item(s)
and / or object(s).

2. Blue-X-Lite
The Blue-X-Lite is a light source specially developed for Digital Image Correlation (DIC). The short
wavelength and low bandwidth blue light improves the optical transmission function of lenses and
reduces chromatic aberrations and diffraction, especially in high-resolution setups with a small field
of view. The Blue-X-Lite is an entry-level, cost-effective professional flicker free lighting solution for
digital image correction. Its compact design offers a practical solution that can be easily attached
directly to the stereo bar. The passive cooled fanless design offers the advantage of no vibrations
transmitted to the stereo bar.
The Blue-X-Lite can be used in continuous operation or in pulsed operation with 20 W. Due to its
fast rise times < 100 ns in combination with special trigger unit it is also suitable for synchronization
with DIC high-speed systems for frame rate up to 10.000 fps with stroboscopic illumination. Two
versions are availed with trigger frequency up to 1000 Hz or 10.000 Hz.
Variable focusing allows a beam angle from 5° to 60° - removable and interchangeable lenses
provide for small to large FOV, same as the Blue-X-Focus. The Blue-X-Lite can be equipped with a
polarization filter with adjustable polarization direction to reduce direct reflections.

2.1. Technical description
The Blue-X-Lite can be synchronized with DIC-Systems through a trigger device e.g. ATB-V or DAQ
and can be triggered up to 10.000 Hz (1.000 Hz) in pulse mode. Two Versions are available with
trigger limit of 1.000 Hz or 10.000 Hz. The power of the LED is adjustable via a rotary knob on the
back of the device. It is equipped with passive cooling and an integrated temperature safety
shutdown. The device can be mounted directly with a camera mount to the stereo bar and the
focusing option of the light allows to adjust the light beam from spot up to flood light characteristic.
Simply turn the lens tube to adjust the size of the light beam diameter precisely. The Blue-X-Lite is
designed for 12 VDC with power supply (110 230 VAC, 50/60 Hz) and is equipped with one 20 W
high power single cell LED and generate a flicker-free light.
2.2. Characteristics of the Blue-X-Lite
Stepless intensity control with power switch
The Blue-X-Lite can be switched ON and OFF with the 12 V power supply via the power switch
integrated in the rotary knob. The light intensity can be controlled stepless using the rotary knob.
Recommended intensity adjustments within the operation limits are 0.5- 60% light intensity for
continuous wave mode (CW). For pulse mode 0.5- 100% light intensity is possible.
Operation mode switch for continuous wave mode (CW) or pulse mode (Pulse)
Using the Operation mode switch, change the operation mode from continuous wave mode (CW)
to pulse mode (Pulse) or vice versa. Please check whether the operating limits are within the
permitted range before switching. Operating limits are specified in section 2.6.

designed by isi-sys GmbH.
2.3. Exemplary setup scheme
The Blue-X-Lite can be operated standalone in continuous wave mode when connected to the power
supply through the power supply cable. To operate the Blue-X-Lite in pulse mode, the Blue-X-Lite
must be connected to a trigger device (TTL Signal). The Power is adjustable manually or external by
pulse length and frequency. The Blue-X-Lite can be synchronized with a camera system via the
trigger unit.
For installation and operation note and obey the safety instructions in section 1!

2.4. Focusing mechanism and Illumination area
The Blue-X-Lite can be equipped with two different lens tubes. For larger field of view (FOV) we
recommend using the focusing tube LFOV with the small knurled ring (left image). Depending on
the flange focal distance the beam expands from 10° to 60°. For small areas the SFOV lens tube with
the bigger knurled ring (right image) is recommended in combination with the diffusor, it expands
from 7.5° to 20°. To adjust the light beam, loosen the focusing screw and turn the lens tube
clockwise or counter clockwise.

2.6. Operation Limits for exposure time and frequency
For continuous wave operation, the operating limits of 0.5 - 60 % light intensity are recommended
in pulse mode, a range of 0.5 100 % light intensity can be adjusted. For long-term measurements,
the following instructions should be observed for an undisturbed operation.

2.7. Device safety measures
Temperature safety measures:
Device stops operating when the internal temperature reaches a threshold and stays off until a safe
operating temperature band is reached. Therefore, triggered mode is recommended for long time
measurements. The maximum case surface temperature can reach up to 60°C.
Trigger/ Timing safety measures:
When operating above the power limit with inadmissible trigger times, the lamp switches off for 4
seconds and remains in this mode until permissible trigger times have been set. This can be noticed
through a blinking of the lamp every 4 seconds if the trigger is set. For further information on setting
permissible trigger times see section 2.6.
2.8. Recommended usage
We always recommend using pulse mode when connected to a DAQ or any other external trigger.
This leads to a longer lifetime and higher power output as the continuous wave mode leads to higher
internal temperatures and a possible safety switch off.
Depending on the ambient temperature the output power is limited. Therefore, it is possible, that
operation at higher power output in continuous wave mode and pulse mode is not possible for a
long amount of time. For more information see 2.7.
The polarization filter which is equipped to the focusing adapter is a wear part. The wear is mainly
caused by operation in continuous wave mode. To reduce wear, operation in pulse mode is
recommended.
