5.0 Daily use
5.1 Jøtul’s definition of quality firewood
With good quality firewood we mean logs of, for example:
Birch, beech and oak.
Good quality wood should be dried so that the water content is
approx. 20%.
To achieve this, the wood should be chopped at the latest in
late winter or early spring. It should be cut and stacked so that
air circulates around it. The stacks must be protected so as to
avoid absorbing excessive rainwater. The logs should be taken
indoors in autumn for use during the winter season.
The amount of energy obtainable from 1 kg of wood varies very
little. On the other hand the specific weight of the different
kinds of wood varies considerably. As an example, a certain
volume of birch will provide less kWh than the same volume of
oak, which has a higher specific weight.
The amount of energy produced by 1 kg quality wood is about
3,8 kWh.1 kg of completely dry wood (0 % humidity) produces
approximately 5 kWh, while wood with a humidity level of
60% produces only around 1,5 kWh/kg.
Consequences of using damp wood may include:
Appearance of soot/tar on the glass, in the fireplace and in•
the chimney.
Less heat produced.•
Risk of chimney fire as a consequence of soot accumulated•
in the fireplace, flue pipe and chimney.
The wood is difficult to light and the fire can die easily.•
Be especially careful never to lay fire using any of the
following materials:
Household waste, plastic bags, etc.•
Painted or impregnated wood (highly toxic)•
Chipboard or laminated boards•
Driftwood (seawater)•
This may harm the product and pollute the atmosphere.
Attention! Never use combustible liquids such as petrol,
kerosene, alcohol or anything similar to start the fire. This may
cause harm both to yourself and to the product.
5.2 Wood consumption
The nominal heat output of Jøtul I 570 FL with the water exchanger
amounts to 25kW. Wood consumption of the recommended
humidity level (below 20%) with nominal heat radiation equals
about 8.6 kg/h.Anotheressentialfactorconcerningtheproperpace
of wood consumption is the length of logs. Logs should be of the
following dimensions:
Kindling (chopped logs):
Length: Approx 30 cm
Diameter: 2 - 5 cm
Amount per fire: 6 - 8 pieces.
Firewood (split logs):
Recommended length: 30 - 50 cm
Diameter: Approx. 12 - 15 cm
Size of the fire: 8,6 kg (for nominal output)
Mengde pr. ilegg: 8 pieces.
6.0 Service
Warning! Any unauthorized modifications to the product are
illegal and may cause damage to the product! Only original spare
parts may be used!
Servicing of the heating system should be performed in
compliance with the regulations stated in regional standards
(Poland – PN-B-02413).
The insert’s servicing procedure should be carried out according
to ‘Installation and operating instructions for Jøtul I 570 FL’.
7.0 Maintenance
7.1 The water exchanger system –
maintenance
Cleaning of the water exchanger system should be performed at
least 4 times a year. If the need arises cleaning can be performed
more often.
Insert the sweeper (A) into the space between the separator (B)
and the wall of the water exchanger (C). Move the sweeper to
and fro in order to get rid of the accumulated soot.
It is recommended to perform the cleaning process one day•
after burning. Then the draught can remove soot particles
from the building.
A clean space between the separator and the water exchanger•
reduces wood consumption.
Before the heating season, water and smoke connections•
should be checked that they are properly sealed. When the
heating season is finished, the insert as well as the water
exchanger should be cleaned and all the accumulated soot
should be removed from the smoke pipe.
7.2 Insert – maintenance
The process of cleaning and maintaining the insert should
be performed according to ‘Installation and operating
instructions for Jøtul I 570 FL,’ building and fire-prevention
regulations.
