DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. DESCRIPTION
A. General (Ref. Fig.11
The tachometer indicator covered by this manual indicates
percentage generator speeds.
The indicator mechanism consists of an eddy current
tachometric unit, coupled to a three-phase synchronous motor,
the rotor of which revolves in synchronism with a two-pole,
three-phase generator, to which it is electrically connected.
The calibrated scale is expanded in the normal operating
range to provide accurate readings.
Integral lighting, supplied from two
23
VDC sources, is
provided to illuminate the presentation.

(lj Notor (Ref. Figs.3 and 4 and IPL Fig.3)
The motor comprises the following components :
(a) A 12-pole piece wound stator; this stator is
composed of a laminated magnetic circuit which
carries a 3-phase winding made of twelve star-series
connected coils.
A groove machined around the stator body provides
the means of attaching the motor (3-110) to the
mounting plate (3-90) by means of three clamps and
screws. Three terminals are secured to the stator
end cover with Loctite and provide electrical
connection to the receptacle (3-160).
The receptacle (3-160) is secured to a bridge (3-250)
by two screws (3-170). The bridge is held away from
the mounting plate (3-90) by two pillars (3-140) which
are held in position by two screws (3-100) and retai-
ning rings (3-150).
The electrical connections between the receptacle,
.-the motors and the terminal block are made through
_ two flexible printed circuits (3-180 and 3-190).
(b) A rotor, composed of a shaft on which are mounted
a hysteresis rotor and a freely rotating 4-pole
starter magnet ; these two components are coupled
together through a catch dog system limiting the
rotation of the magnet to a determined value.
(c) A magnetic circuit (3-lo), mounted at the forward
' end of the rotor shaft: it is held away from the
mounting plate (3-90) by a spacer (3-70) and washer
(3-30) and secured by a screw (3-20).
The magnetic circuit consists of :
- A 6-pole permanent magnet (30-l) fitted onto a
holder (30-2). The magnet consists of six small
bars which are cemented and potted.
- A keeper ring (3-40) which is attached to the holder
(30-2) by means of a spring washer (3-50) and three
screws (3-60).

(2) Movement (Ref. Fig.5 and IPL Figs. 2 and 3)
The movement is composed of :
(a) A measuring drum (2-10) which is fitted to one end
of the gear (2-100).
(b) A gear train which transmits the angular displacement
of the drum to the pointer. Jewelled bearings are
used throughout the movement to reduce friction to
a minimum. The gear train consists of :
- A gear (2-100) fitted with a hairspring (2-110)
and pivoting between the bridge (2-60) and the
lower plate (2-40). The free end of the hairspring
(2-110) is pinned to a post on an adjusting plate
(2-130) which pivots between the bridge (2-60) and
the upper plate (2-190). At the top of the adjusting
plate (2-130) is mounted a hairspring (2-20) whose
free end is pinned to a post on the upper plate
(2-190).
Two adjusting setscrews (2-80) are fitted into
.- the bridge (2-60).
- A pointer gear (2-160) carrying the pointer
and pivoting between the bridge (2-140) and the
upper plate (2-190); the wheel of this gear
meshes with the wheel of the gear (2-100).
The gear train lies between the upper plate (2-190)
and the lower plate (2-40). The two plates are separated
by four short pillars which are riveted to the lower
plate and attached to the upper plate by four screws.
The movement is assembled to the motor by the way of
four long pillars which are riveted to the upper plate
(2-190) and attached to the motor plate by four screws.

(la) A case (l-160) consisting of a moulded flange and
a pressed case which are secured together with araldite.
Four locknuts are fitted into the corners of the flange
to accommodate the fixing screws.
Two recesses are machined into the lower corners of
the case flange to accommodate printed circuit boards.
Each board, which is screwed in and then secured with
Silastene, is fitted with a contact leafspring and
a holder containing a clear lamp (l-150). The contact
leafspring and lamp holder are connected to a connection
plate (l-170) via two wires, red and white, held in place
with adhesive tape and dabs of Araldite within the
case.
The connection plate (l-170) is secured to the bottom
of the case (l-160) by two screws and a locating pin:
it is energized by means of the three contacts (3-220)
of the terminal block (3-200), these being held against
each of the three contact strips under the action of
the springs (3-230). The terminal block (3-200),
attached to the motor bridge, is itself connected
to the pins of the electrical receptacle by a flexible
printed circuit (3-180).
The bottom of the case has a union which provides
the means of filling the instrument with nitrogen.
On conclusion of the filling procedure, this union
is blanked off with a screw and sealing ring.
The case is finished in dull black and carries a
modification label (l-240) and an identification
label (l-230).
(b) A dial (l-90) secured to two spacers on the upper
plate of the movement.
(c)
A
pointer (l-80) fitted to the forward end of the
pointer gear (2-260).
(d) A bezel assembly comprising :
- A spacer ring (l-70) seated on the upper plate
of the movement.
- Two sealing rings (l-160), of which one is seated
between the spacer ring and the upper plate and
the other between ihe spacer riny and the glass
assembly.

2.
OPERATION
A. Operation of Motor
A three-phase alternating current supplied by a tachometer
generator flows through the winding of the stator; the
frequency of this current is proportional to the speed to
be measured.
Under the effect of the rotating field produced by this
current, the hysteresis rotor initiates its revolving
movement as does the magnet : both are additive in effect
to ensure synchronous rotation of the assembly from start-up.
Is. Operation of Speed Measurement and Indication
System
-
(Ref. Figs. 5 and 7)
The permanent magnet, fitted to the end of the rotor shaft,
produces a magnetic field which passes through the skirt
of the measuring drum and closes within the keeper ring.
Ref. fig. 7.
This magnetic field, by its rotating action, induces Eddy
currents into the measuring drum produced from a conducting
metal; these currents, by interaction with the field respon-
sible for their production, develop a driving torque along
the drumstaffwhich is proportional to the speed of the flux
variation and, hence, to the speed to be measured.
From 0 to
85 %,
the hairspring
(2-110)
fitted to the drum
gear (2-100) opposes rotation of the drum so that its angle
of deflection, corresponding to its equilibrium position,
is equally proportional to the rotational speed of the
permanent magnet and hence to the speed to be measured.
