About this Manual
This is the hardware manual for the emVIEW-12T/D. It gives all necessary information to users and
programmers of the emVIEW-12T/D. We have tried to keep it compact, so there are no special
sections for users and programmers. I.e. everything that can be said about the serial port is said in
one place (connector layout, signal levels and programming hints). Users that are not programmers
might therefore only read the first sections (Introduction and Installation), and come back to the
detailed sections when they need special information.
The manual starts with an Introduction to the emVIEW-12T/D. This is some prose that describes the
features and architecture of the emVIEW-12T/D. You should already know this if you have bought the
board! It then discusses some topics about Installation of the product.
The rest of the manual then covers technical details about the emVIEW-12T/D.

1 Introduction
Janz Tec AG’s emVIEW systems are an additional development. These HMI systems and industrial
display solutions are a combination of the familiar Janz emPC systems with a wide range of LCDs,
with or without touch-screen. Starting from 6.4’’, the LCDs can be combined with emPC-A500 or
emPC-M as a complete HMI solution with smallest dimensions and power dissipation. EmVIEWs are
also available without touch-screen. The emVIEW-12T/D is a display only solution.
If a touch-screen is not needed contact Janz Tec AG for further information.

1.2 Functional Overview
EmVIEWs are normally delivered with a touch-screen. To use the touch-screen the emVIEW-12T/D
must be connected to a standard RS232 or USB port of a computer system e.g. an emPC and a driver
must be installed at the host.
The control of the resistive touch-screen is realized through a PenMount DMC9000. The resistive
touch-screen is realized through a 2.1mm thick glass panel with resistive surface. The PenMount
controller is linked to the RS232 port and USB port. If the USB port is used, the serial port is
deactivated.
The power must be supplied by an external power supply. This power supply must be capable to
provide enough power for the emVIEW-12T/D. Please refer to the technical specifications section for
more information.

The emVIEW-12T/D provides a ring indicator (RI) signal for waking up the host PC. To use this feature
the host must provide ‘Wake On Ring’(also ‘PowerUp on Modem’) and this option must be activated in
the BIOS.
The length of serial cable must not exceed 10 m.
3.2.3 Universal serial bus - USB
To connect the touch-screen to a host computer the USB can be used, too. The connector is USB
Type B, so a standard USB Type A to Type B cable can be used to connect the touch-screen with the
host.
The length of USB cable must not exceed 5 m.
3.2.4 Analogue Video - VGA
There are two ways to apply video data. One of them is an analogue video signal over the VGA
connector (High density 15 pin female SUB-D). Analogue resolutions to SXGA (1280x1024) at 75 MHz
or UXGA (1600x1200) at 60 MHz are support.
A 10 m VGA cable is tested with the emVIEW-12T/D.
3.2.5 Digital video - DVI
As noticed earlier there is a second way to apply video data, the digital input DVI. The reliable DVI port
is operating up to 165 MHz (UXGA at 60 MHz), thus it can be connected to all compliant digital DVI
transmitters.
The length of the DVI-D cable must not exceed 10 m.
The best picture results are obtained by setting the native resolution. The native resolution
is 800 x 600 (SVGA).

3.3 Driver installation
If the emVIEW is delivered without touch-screen there are no drivers needed. Using the serial
interface only the PenMount DMC 9000 driver has to be installed. Is the USB interface used, the
PenMount driver must be installed as well and an auxiliary driver for the USB transceiver chip FT-
232R with virtual COM port (VCP) must be installed. A Linux kernel (newer than version 2.4.20)
contains the VCP driver.
Both drivers are receivable for several operating systems, visit the driver developer homepages:
PenMount: http://www.penmount.com/down.php
3.3.1 Windows XP driver installation for touch-screen on RS232 or USB
If the touch-screen is connected on the RS232 connector or the USB virtual COM port driver is
installed the PenMount driver has to be installed. It can be downloaded at the address above. The
driver installation is started by clicking the Setup executable in the PenMount folder.

3.3.2 Ubuntu Linux driver installation for touch-screen on RS232 or USB
Download the correct driver for the installed OS. In this section the installation on an Ubuntu 8.04 is
shown. Once the driver is downloaded (Ubuntu 8.04 Driver 2.2) the archive has to be unzipped
somewhere with:
gunzip “PenMount Ubuntu8.04 Driver V2.2.tar.gz“and
tar -xvf “PenMount Ubuntu8.04 Driver V2.2.tar“.
After unzipping the archive a folder pmlinux-ubuntu8.04 remains. Jumping into it with
cd pmlinux-ubuntu8.04 and installing the driver with
sudo ./pm-setup.
Choosing the model 4 (PenMount 9000). Now the difference is coming, when installing the touch-
screen with RS232 choose the correct device (e.g. /dev/ttyS0 while using COM1). When the touch-
screen is connected to USB choose 5 for other serial devices and type in /dev/ttyUSB0. This is the
device where the FTDI driver mounts the found chip to. Baud rate 19200, right button, stream mode,
500 (for 500 ms hold time) and the driver is installed. Now restart the xserver (Ctrl + Alt + Backspace).

4 Use of emVIEW-12T/D
Once the emVIEW is installed it can be used at once, it is already configured. The user is free to
adjust the configuration at will. To do so, the installed on screen display (OSD) must be used.
To finish the driver installation, the touch screen must be calibrated.
4.1 Using and calibrating the touch-screen on Windows XP
Once the drivers are installed, the PenMount monitor icon is shown in the taskbar. By clicking the
icon the control panel is started and the touch screen configuration is displayed as shown in figure 7.
There are four tabs in the control panel, ‘Device’, ‘Multiple Monitors’, ‘Tools’and ‘About’. On the device
tab a field with found device is shown. By selecting one of these devices it can be configured. While
using more than one monitor with touch-screen the ‘Multiple Monitors’tab helps to map the touch-
screens at will. The ‘Tools’ tab shows miscellaneous small tools for working with the touch-screen and
at least the ‘About’ tab shows version information for the control panel.
figure 7: PenMount Control Panel
The device window displays the detected devices, in case of figure 7 there is only one device installed.
